Roxbury superintendent welcomes new staff, details new programs as new school year starts
Superintendent of Schools Loretta Radulic is asking teachers in the grades K-12 district to imagine the start of the new school year from the student's perspective.  "As we usher in another wonderful school year, let's take a moment to remember why we do what we do. Let's also think about what our students are anticipating: meeting new teachers for the first time, walking down new hallways and opening new lockers, making new friends, and of course, learning, lots of learning," Radulic writes in a letter to staff.

"As educators, we, too, continue to learn. I know many of you have taken on new challenges this summer, worked on polishing lessons, buses, machinery, and continued learning - even while enjoying time with your family. I want to thank you for that. What you do in the classrooms, main offices, on the buses, and in the fields, all contribute to creating an environment where our students can blossom," she said.

"We continue to be a team with one goal in mind - educating the next generation or, as we like to say, "preparing the students of today for tomorrow". It's an awesome and honorable responsibility, and you should all feel proud," she said.

"This year we welcome 37 new teachers, which includes 12 leave replacements and teachers who began mid-year last year. We also welcome Jessica Swaim, our new Assistant Principal at Eisenhower Middle School, Brian Hamer who will experience his first September as the Assistant Principal at Lincoln Roosevelt, Matthew Trokan as our new social studies supervisor, Peter Riffel as our new Buildings and Grounds Director, and Yusein Durakov as our new Assistant Business Administrator," she said.

Additionally, Radulic congratulated Chris Zegar on his promotion to director of innovative instruction and planning and Joseph Mondanaro to the position of business administrator. Click here to read more about Superintendent Radulic's opening day remarks from the Roxbury Register.

VOTE NOW: We Need Your Help to Honor Our History
Vote Now!
The Grey Building Bell Tower Bell needs a new home and we want the community's help to select its new place as a ground display! Since 1903, the bell was housed in the cupola atop the Grey Building on North Hillside Avenue. The crumbling cupola is being replaced, but it was determined that re-installing the bell would be too costly. However, it's a part of our history, so we want a special place of recognition and would like the community to have a voice in that decision.

Vote now to determine whether the bell will remain on-site in front of the first High School (now the Board of Education Administrative Offices) or be moved to the current Roxbury High School on the football field. Click here to cast your vote now!

Roxbury Football Updates:
Roxbury Football Players Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity Project
The young men who play varsity football for Roxbury High School know a lot about teamwork on the field. On July 19th a dozen of them practiced teamwork on a construction site.  Joined by three parents, the twelve Roxbury Gaels - juniors and seniors in the upcoming school year - spent the day volunteering their services at the Habitat for Humanity project being built on Main Street in Succasunna.  The outing was organized by parent Mike Spitzer who was joined at the site by parents Jason Doer and John Mastandrea. Spitzer said it's important for the student-athletes to be involved in community outreach initiatives.

The help was welcomed by Habitat for Humanity Construction Supervisor Michael Dakak. He decided what the young men would do all day and helped make sure they did it right.  Among the jobs tackled by the footballers during the brutally hot day was installing fire caulking and fire insulation throughout the house. The teammates also did some site cleanup and a bit of aluminum flashing installation. Click here to read more about this community service project from Tap Into Roxbury.

Gaels eager to return to form
Roxbury's 2019 football season won't get underway until Sept. 6 at Pascack Valley.  Someone forgot to tell that to the Gaels during the early stages of the preseason.  Coach Cosmo Lorusso's team wasn't saving anything for the opener during drills. The Gaels were killing it - a good sign for the upcoming season.

" I'm really pleased with the way this group is working," said Lorusso, whose team finished 3-6 last year. "Last year was a tough year for Roxbury. Things didn't go the way we wanted. This year, the vibe is different. There's a lot of energy. The guys are taking more ownership of the team and we hope it leads to more success." Roxbury Volleyball Updates:
Girls Volleyball: Group 3 teams to watch, 2019 - Roxbury
Roxbury (Last year: 14-14) -  The past two seasons have been about building to a point for Roxbury. This year's squad is that point and features just two seniors but a plethora of young talent starting with its juniors.

Quinn Longo and Amber Chen have been outstanding for coach Anthony McMichael in their first two seasons with the program. Now, both juniors, they'll look to make their mark at the state level.  Longo will shift over to a setting role and Chen will become the team's top hitting option. Newcomers Juliana Medini and Victoria Latino are a couple of players to keep on your radar once the season gets underway. Another name to look out for is sophomore Samantha Olander, who will transition to an outside hitting role. Medini and Olander combined for 108 kills and 40 blocks.  This could be the start of a very bright stretch for the Roxbury program, which can legitimately contend in a very open Group 3 field this season. He traveled all the way from California to attend the event. Click here to read about this reunion from Tap Into Roxbury
