Portrait of a Graduate: The First Step in Transforming Our School System
Throughout the school year, we have been working as a community to formalize our beliefs on the ways in which we fulfill our vision of "preparing the children of today for tomorrow" with a special focus on our Gael graduates. After multiple meetings where we garnered the input of community members, Board of Education members, administration, teachers, and students, we narrowed the focus to six themes that we collectively believe frame the skills and attributes necessary for life beyond our schools and capture the essence of our Portrait of a Graduate. These include: Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Active Citizens, Curious Thinkers, Adaptable & Resilient, and Life Ready. Please check out the QR code below for more information about our Portrait of a Graduate and a view of the designs.

These themes were given to our Graphic Design students in Mr. Schilling's class with the responsibility to create a visual representation of our Portrait of a Graduate. On April 8th, the students presented their designs to me, Dr. Seipp, our Assistant Superintendent, and Mr. Mitchell, our Director of Innovation. The students were thoughtful and impressive in their presentations, noting not only color, placement, and perspective, but also symbolism and how they feel about being in our high school. Comments, as close as I can remember, included sentiments such as, "Our shield symbolizes that Roxbury High School is a safe place for us to learn and grow," "Our light shines brighter as we accumulate the skills we need for our future," "This is the path we take to prepare us for our future," and "Often times students choose to decorate their graduation caps; here is a decoration of all of the skills a graduate would acquire at Roxbury High School." To say I was proud of them is an understatement. Their work provides a wonderful variety of strength, boldness, elegance and class, as well as out-of-the-box thinking with the use of scrolls, ribbons, laurels, steps, paths, silhouettes, shields, and light.

They were displayed at the National Art Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Thursday evening and will be displayed again on Saturday, April 13th, at the Roxbury Public Library, at the Board of Education meeting on April 15th, and in Town Hall on April 16th until they return home and adorn the lobby of Roxbury High School. Morning announcements at the high school will include an opportunity for students to highlight aspects of their design. The school and public community will have an opportunity to participate in a survey and vote on the design that best captures the essence of a Portrait of a Graduate. Voting will commence on April 16th and conclude on May 16th. Look for the survey on our website. We e ncourage you to participate. The winning design will represent our Portrait of a Graduate and be revealed at the May 20th Board of Education meeting. Click here for the QR Code.

Orwell's Animal Farm - Two Perspectives from Those That Lived It
It's not always easy to relate what you read in school to real life. Sometimes you need a little extra help. Eighth graders at Eisenhower Middle School in Roxbury Township have been reading George Orwell's classic story Animal Farm, a satirical tale based on the Russian Revolution. The allegory, set in England, has the characters portrayed by animals mirroring the communist leaders and the events reflecting the communist society of Russia.

To help the students gain extra insight, ELA teacher Margery Richman invited former parents, Alex Del Rosario and Daniel Vo to be guest speakers to share their first-hand stories of growing up in communist countries before coming to the United States.

Richman shared with the students, "For the past few weeks we have researched information about the Russian Revolution or other periods in our history when rulers made the rules and executed them, hence the term rulers. We learned how societies that are governed without democracy look and feel much different than what we live or what we know. But Animal Farm and The Wave are just fiction with some hints to real life events, right?"

"Perhaps once we finished reading our novels, and we have one last discussion about the frustrations that overcame within the society of Manor Farm or Mr. Ross' social studies class, we will then put the books away on the bookshelf and move onto the next novel, the next story, or the next article. For some of you, you may forget Snowball or Mollie or Mr. Ross. For others, you may forever remember Boxer. But for all of us, it's important to take away the message that without knowledge and courage to speak up when we see wrong, then history can and will repeat itself. For our two speakers, their messages are not from a book; they are their stories, their lives." Click here to read more from our website under "In the News".

RHS Yearbook Featured in Jostens 2019 Look Book
Roxbury High School's Visual Arts department impresses once again. The 2017/2018 yearbook, Legacy, has been recognized for excellence-in-design and featured in the 2019 Jostens Look Book.

Out of the 2,000 submitted yearbooks, the experts at Jostens picked 385 yearbooks to display within their "best-of-the-best" publication that is sent out to over 13,000 high schools within the United States, Canada, and internationally.

Jostens selected two spreads from Roxbury High School's Legacy yearbook.  The first recognition is from their two-page spread design that focused on the Global Hi-5 Expo within the student life section, and the second is the Grand Prize Design winner from the Jostens YearTech Online Design contest. The second recognition came with a $1,000 grand prize that went towards the yearbook program at RHS. Click here to read more from our website under "In the News".

Light It Up Blue for Autism Awareness
Roxbury is Lighting It Up Blue on Friday, April 12th! Students, staff, administrators and community members were all encouraged to wear blue as a sign of acknowledgment and acceptance of our students with autism and in celebration of our differences.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person's ability to communicate, and interact with others. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum condition" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. Some of the behaviors associated with autism include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation; difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning; narrow, intense interests; poor motor skills' and sensory sensitivities. Again, a person on the spectrum might follow many of these behaviors, just a few, or many others besides.

Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month promotes acceptance and celebration of people with autism as family members, friends, classmates, co-workers, and community members making valuable contributions to our world. Understanding autism starts at a young age, and there is no greater place than our school's to teach children about differences, acceptance, and understanding. Autism is a natural variation of the human experience, and we can all create a world which values, includes, and celebrates all kinds of minds. Click here to read more fast facts, and book and movie recommendations to help address Autism Awareness from our website under "In the News".

Roxbury makes statement, hands West Morris 1st loss - Apr 10
Coming into this season,  Roxbury head coach Greg Trotter knew that has squad was going to see plenty of growing pains.  Although its roster is mostly made up of juniors and seniors, only four players - seniors  Will Findlay Nick Danna  and  CJ Danna , as well as sophomore  Jack Findlay  - brought consistent varsity experience from last year's North 1, Group 3 championship to the starting lineup.  In the first 10 days of baseball season, Trotter and his newly assembled squad suffered some of lows as they lost two of their first three games.

While their are plenty of lows that come with growing pains, there are also highs and on Wednesday, Roxbury recorded one of those when it handed a very good  West Morris team its first loss, 9-7, at Roxbury High School. Click here to read more from NJ.com.

Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?  The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.  Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.

The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.  RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. What's stormwater got to do with clean drinking water? - Apr 18
When it rains, chemicals and other dangerous pollutants on our streets, parking lots, and roads get washed into storm drains and are funneled into our drinking water supplies and other waterways that our children play in.  This makes stormwater pollution one of New Jersey's greatest threats to our clean drinking water, especially in towns that don't have the resources to manage flooding.

To learn more about the stormwater issues affecting your community, please join us on Thursday, April 18th for a meet-and-greet with Mayor Wilsusen and Ron Smith, Chairman of the Lake Hopatcong Commission. They're coming together to discuss the serious consequences that flooding and polluted stormwater runoff have for residents of Jefferson Township and nearby Lake Hopatcong, and to address any questions you might have. Click here to read more and to register for this event from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

Seedlings distributed to shore towns may include bayberry or beach plum, shrubs commonly found on dunes and in other coastal environments. Morris County MUA Urges Residents to Put Out Only Acceptable Items for Curbside Recycling
In an effort to capture only  acceptable  materials during curbside recycling collection, the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA), will implement a "tag-it and leave-it" inspection program this summer in the municipalities served by the MUA's "all-in-one" single-stream curbside recycling collection program.

Due to recent enforcement of rigorous restrictions banning unacceptable materials from the curbside recycling stream, the MUA has been assessing unacceptable items in the recycling stream.  The most common and problematic unacceptable materials  (contaminants) found mixed with acceptable recyclables include:
  • plastic bags
  • plastic film/plastic packaging
  • foam (Styrofoam)
  • hangers (plastic, metal, wood)
  • food waste
  • wood scraps
  • plastic bottles/containers coded #3, #4, #6 & #7 (only plastic bottles/containers coded #1, #2 & #5 are acceptable).
For curbside collection, recyclables must be loose in a reusable container with handles and a lid. Also, recyclables must be empty, clean and dry (no food residue). Click here to read more from the Morris County, NJ website.

We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.

Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.
