Enjoy the time off!
Portrait of a Graduate: Voting is Now Open
Throughout the school year, we have been working as a community to formalize our beliefs on the ways in which we fulfill our vision of "preparing the children of today for tomorrow" with a special focus on our Gael graduates. After multiple meetings where we garnered the input of community members, Board of Education members, administration, teachers, and students, we narrowed the focus to six themes that we collectively believe frame the skills and attributes necessary for life beyond our schools and capture the essence of our Portrait of a Graduate. These include: Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Active Citizens, Curious Thinkers, Adaptable & Resilient, and Life Ready. Please check out the QR code below for more information about our Portrait of a Graduate and a view of the designs.
The designs were on display at the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony last Thursday evening at Roxbury High School, at the mini-golf event at the Roxbury Public Library on Saturday, at the Board of Education meeting Monday, and Roxbury Town Hall on Tuesday, before coming to adorn the lobby at Roxbury High School.
The school and public community now have an opportunity to participate in a survey to vote on the design that best captures the essence of a Portrait of a Graduate. Voting is now open and will conclude on May 16th. Vote now at
www.roxbury.org.
The winning design will represent Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate and will be revealed at the May 20th Board of Education Meeting.

Today's Feature: Home Grown Lettuce and Basil
Roxbury Township Public School's food service provider, Maschio's, featured salads on Tuesday utilizing fresh lettuce and basil from the culinary hydroponic gardens at Roxbury High School.
Chef Nick Hamadyk used the lettuce grown by the VISTA students for these featured salads and garnished them with fresh basil, also grown by the students.
The culinary arts classes at the high school also took advantage of the tower gardens by harvesting basil last week to include in their recipes.

All About New Jersey with Author Visit at Jefferson School
Students at Jefferson Elementary School were treated to a special author visit thanks to the Jefferson School PTA. On Monday, children's book author, Lisa Funari Willever came to speak about what it takes to be an author.
Fourth graders at the school were ready for her visit as they conducted an author study on her leading up to the event. They asked inquisitive questions about her career as an author and how she comes up with her characters and places included in her books, especially her Nicky Fifth's chapter book series.
This popular series at Jefferson School follows the adventures of Nicky Fifth at all different places throughout New Jersey. This particular series includes specific spots and people only found in New Jersey.
As part of this day, each student in the school would be leaving with one of two of her books. The preschool to first grade were getting "A Glove of Their Own" purchased by the PTA while Funari Willever brought "Nicky Fifth's Fit" books for the second through fourth grade. Teachers at Jefferson were also getting the Teacher's Guide to "Nicky Fifth's New Jersey".

Pi Day Activity at LRS Leads to Food Donation
On March 14th, sixth-grade math students at Lincoln/Roosevelt School in Roxbury Township discovered that while Pi equals 3.14 and on and on, it can also provide many cans of food to Roxbury Social Services.
Each student donated at least one can of food to participate in the lesson. Sixth grade Math Teacher, Liz Bonis shared how, "Students wrapped a piece of string around the can, and then cut the string (more than once) to match the diameter of the can. Guess what? They ended up with three equal pieces of string and one much smaller piece; 3.14!"
Students donated their cans to the local food pantry once the lesson was over.
Bonis added, "The cans donated by about 250 students filled two grocery carts to almost overflowing. The food was a welcome donation."
Ed Hade, food pantry volunteer, happily accepted the food saying, "We don't get a lot of donations at this time of year, so this comes at a perfect time."
The math students at Lincoln Roosevelt learned that PI is 3.14, and even more - their donations can support and feed a community.

RHS Holds NAHS Induction and Spring Break Into Art Show
Roxbury High School held its first National Art Honor Society (NAHS) induction ceremony on Thursday, April 11th. Twenty-nine high school students, who demonstrated an outstanding ability and interest in art, became members. The NAHS promotes the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service by bringing art advocacy and education to the attention of the school and community.
Acceptance into NAHS requires students to maintain a grade point average of 3.0, successfully complete two years of high school art classes and be recommended by an art teacher. Members are required to participate in upcoming art events and shows and submit their best work for review and display.
We congratulate all the National Art Honor Society members and the Spring Break Into Art Show finalists for their creative abilities, talents and dedicated spirit to the pursuit of art now and in the future. Click here to read more about this event on our website under "In the News".

Math and Movement at Latest SAIL Parent Academy
Learning math has never been more fun at Roxbury's last Student Academic Intervention and Learning (SAIL) Parent Academy of the school year on April 4th at Nixon School for Franklin and Nixon families.
Over 165 parents and children from Franklin and Nixon School turned out for a hot meal prepared by Maschio's, Roxbury's food service provider and a night of math and movement for a Family Fun Night.
Following dinner, the families headed to the gymnasium to rotate through various math stations to engage in fun and educational kinesthetic math activities.
Each student was given a program guide and workbook to travel to the various mats. With the help of district staff members, families took their program guides and found new ways to practice math by hopping and skipping through the math mats. Individual stations included math and movement mats, skip counting, clocks, shapes, and coins. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Alumni In the News
Roxbury Alumni Directory Project with PCI
If you're one of our 17,000 alumni, you may be receiving a postcard, email, or phone call from Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI). We're working with PCI to produce an updated alumni directory. If you graduated before 2014, PCI (formally Harris Connect) is the same company that did our last two bound directories. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and friends, and it helps the school keep track of where everyone has gone!
We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.
Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.

A Prom Date with a Beloved Neighbor for Roxbury Special Ed Student
16-year-old special education student Brandon Slater of Succasunna never attended a dance. That changed Friday, thanks to his lifelong neighbor Tara Roumes.
Because of Tara, Brandon's first dance was a big one: The Roxbury High School Junior Prom.
Brandon attends New Beginnings in Fairfield. Tara, also 16, attends Roxbury High School. Both are juniors who live on St. Mary's Street in Succasunna.
There's a very special bond between Tara and Brandon. She began her friendship with Brandon at three years old and became a constant companion through childhood, even serving as his only babysitter when she was old enough to take care of him.
Ever since Tara was young, she's been scheming a way to ask her neighbor to her prom. Inspiration came recently: Brandon loves to create works of art with Legos, and that gave Tara an idea. Click here to read more about this special event from Tap Into Roxbury.

The 2019 season for Roxbury's recreation baseball teams began Wednesday with an opening day party in Landing that included a ceremonial first pitch tossed by Matt Adonis, a fifth-grader who survived the removal of a cancerous brain tumor.
At least 500 people attended the event, which took place at the Landing Park Recreation Complex and featured music, food, ice cream and a bounce house.
Roxbury Baseball Association President Rich Ronchetta said there are 330 players on 32 teams in the baseball program this year.
A Windy Groundbreaking in Roxbury for Horseshoe Lake Park Upgrade Project
Roxbury officials gathered Tuesday for a groundbreaking ceremony to launch construction of $1.5 million worth of improvements to Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna, including a new artificial turf field.
The Roxbury Mayor and Council were joined at the event by several dozen Roxbury Junior Gaels lacrosse players who were practicing at the park. Enduring a relentless, chilly breeze, town officials and the lacrosse players posed with golden shovels to celebrate the long-sought project.
Afterward, inside the Roxbury Senior Center, the celebration continued with chocolate cake and bottled water. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Minor Rate Increase in Proposed Roxbury Town Budget - May 7th
The municipal portion of the average Roxbury homeowner's tax bill will increase by about $17 per year under a new township budget introduced by the Roxbury Mayor and Council on Tuesday.
Residents will be allowed to comment about the proposed $29,770,318 budget at a public hearing scheduled for May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in town hall.
The budget represents an overall decrease of $808,102 from the 2018 budget, but the amount to be raised by taxation increases from $22,788,146 to $22,965,203 to make up for a slight dip in miscellaneous revenue and a $100,000 reduction in surplus used to offset the budget, officials said.
