Roxbury Schools Celebrates Earth Day
In honor of Earth Day last Sunday, two Roxbury Schools celebrated the day through sustainable programs.  The Eisenhower Middle School Builders Club with the assistance of club advisors, Elizabeth Tucker and Marie Pessolano celebrated the day by cleaning up Eyland Avenue. This club is the middle school version of Kiwanis, Key Club, K-Kids which meets every two weeks after school and does community service projects.

At the elementary level, Franklin School did their annual earth day poster contest based on the Earth Day Network theme. This year's theme is to stop plastic pollution and the marine animals.

In addition to the poster contest, the Franklin School PTA decided to hold a plastic bag collection challenge.  The PTA also teamed with Madeleine Tarleton, the school's Math Supplementary Instruction teacher to turn the counting process into a math lesson. Students practiced their math skills by helping count the bags collected.

Within a week, the Franklin students collected 2,202 plastic bags to be recycled at ShopRite. Click here to read more on our webpage under "In the News".

Roxbury Families Invited for Bilingual Parent Workshop
Roxbury Township Public Schools provided a parent workshop opportunity Wednesday night at Franklin Elementary School specifically geared towards K-12 families of non-native speakers, Developing the Bilingual Adults of the Future Begins Today, with special guest Meredith Alvaro of Staff Development Workshops.

Families were invited via personal invitation from their children's English Language Learner (ELL) teacher along with translated flyers to learn easy and fun ways of developing literacy and math skills at home in student's native language. Unfortunately, the turnout was low but Alvaro still had a positive message to share along with some suggestions to help bring these families into the fold.

She emphasized early on in her presentation that being bilingual is an advantage. As these students grow and prepare themselves for careers and being global citizens, knowing multiple languages will give them an edge over others who are not.

Roxbury currently has close to a 100 English Language Learners in its K-12 schools and these students are developing English acquisition which can continue to develop at home along with their native language. Click here to read more about this workshop on our webpage under "In the News".

County Road Paving Plan: About 3 Miles in Roxbury
Drivers on sections of Mt. Arlington Boulevard and West Dewey Avenue will be enjoying new pavement before the end of the year, according to Morris County, which owns the roads and has included them in its spring/summer 2018 paving plan.

The plan calls for repaving 1.3 miles of Mt. Arlington Boulevard (county route 616) between Landing Road and Auriemma Court and 1.6 miles of West Dewey Avenue (county route 642) between Berkshire Valley Road and North Main Street in Wharton.

The county did not give a timeframe for the two projects, which are among 32 road repaving jobs planned for the season. The Morris County Board of Freeholders authorized the repaving of more than 30 miles of county roadway across 24 municipalities at a cost of about $9 million. Little Lake Hopatcong Park in Roxbury Gets a Name

A small peninsula jutting into Lake Hopatcong in Landing now has a name thanks to some Roxbury elementary school students: Landing Gateway Park.  The sliver of property, flanked by Landing Channel on one side and Lake's End Marina on the other, is owned by the state but is being taken over by the township. Students at nearby Nixon Elementary School were taught about the area's history and asked to give the park a name.

Their choice was announced this week by Shawn Potillo, a member of the Roxbury Planning Board who also sits on the township's Landing Gateway and Streetscaping Committee. He said the second-grade, third-grade and fourth-grade students at Nixon narrowed a list of possible names to Landing Passage, Landing Channel Park and Landing Gateway Park before voting on the latter. Roxbury Arts Alliance Hosts Bye Bye Birdie - May 11-19th
Hexagon Players continues to delight audiences of all ages this spring with their upcoming musical production of Bye Bye Birdie, their first production in partnership with Roxbury Arts Alliance at Investors Bank Theater at the Horseshoe Lake Complex at 72 Eyland Avenue in Succasunna. Under the direction of Ray Gelpke, the musical direction of Nancy James, and the choreography of Olivia Davis, Bye Bye Birdie promises to be a fun, high energy production for the entire family to enjoy. With colorful costumes, dazzling lighting, and a catchy pop score, this show is sure to be a highlight of the spring season.

Bye Bye Birdie is inspired by the fervor created when Elvis Presley received his draft card in 1957, and follows the story of rock 'n roller Conrad Birdie and his fans, who are devastated when their favorite singer announces that he has been drafted. Before leaving to join the army, Conrad pledges "One Last Kiss" to one deserving fan, Kim MacAfee, a publicity stunt concocted by his managers, Albert Peterson and his longtime girlfriend, Rose Alvarez. The girls of Sweet Apple, Ohio can barely contain their excitement, while the boys are less than thrilled by the iconic rock star's visit. Hilarity, catchy tunes, and fun ensue!

Performances are May 11-19. Tickets are  $25 General Admission or  $20 for Students and Senior Citizens. Hexagon Players is a community theater group hosted by the Roxbury Arts Alliance at the Investors Bank Theater at the Horseshoe Lake Complex in Roxbury, NJ. For performance times and/or to order tickets online, please visit www.hexagonplayers.org or call 908-514-8499. Click here to view more information and the program flyer in our Virtual Backpack.

Hopatcong Block Party Open to Sponsors and Vendors - May 12th
During World War I, residents of New York City's East Side began holding informal gatherings in the streets to honor people from their neighborhoods who were serving the Armed Forces. One hundred years later, "block parties" have become a favorite festive way for neighbors to strengthen their bonds and enhance their sense of belonging.

That fact is not lost on organizers of the 5 th Annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party, scheduled for May 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Hopatcong State Park in Landing.  "It's a great way to meet or reconnect with neighbors while being entertained outdoors after a long winter," said Co-Planner Beth BaRoss. "Everyone knows what a block party is, and this is one like you've never seen before."

Hosted by the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, the Block Party will feature 180 booths, showcasing equal numbers of small businesses, non-profit organizations and crafters. Live the Lake New Jersey is the main sponsor of the event. Guests will also enjoy live music, raffles, giveaways, boat and trackless-train rides, on-the-water demonstrations, a children's activity area and a food court with seating for about 100 patrons.
