Roxbury Schools Celebrates Earth Day
In honor of Earth Day last Sunday, two Roxbury Schools celebrated the day through sustainable programs.
The Eisenhower Middle School Builders Club with the assistance of club advisors, Elizabeth Tucker and Marie Pessolano celebrated the day by cleaning up Eyland Avenue. This club is the middle school version of Kiwanis, Key Club, K-Kids which meets every two weeks after school and does community service projects.
At the elementary level, Franklin School did their annual earth day poster contest based on the Earth Day Network theme. This year's theme is to stop plastic pollution and the marine animals.
In addition to the poster contest, the Franklin School PTA decided to hold a plastic bag collection challenge.
The PTA also teamed with Madeleine Tarleton, the school's Math Supplementary Instruction teacher to turn the counting process into a math lesson. Students practiced their math skills by helping count the bags collected.
Within a week, the Franklin students collected 2,202 plastic bags to be recycled at ShopRite. Click here to read more on our webpage under "In the News".
Roxbury Families Invited for Bilingual Parent Workshop
Roxbury Township Public Schools provided a parent workshop opportunity Wednesday night at Franklin Elementary School specifically geared towards K-12 families of non-native speakers, Developing the Bilingual Adults of the Future Begins Today, with special guest Meredith Alvaro of Staff Development Workshops.
Families were invited via personal invitation from their children's English Language Learner (ELL) teacher along with translated flyers to learn easy and fun ways of developing literacy and math skills at home in student's native language. Unfortunately, the turnout was low but Alvaro still had a positive message to share along with some suggestions to help bring these families into the fold.
She emphasized early on in her presentation that being bilingual is an advantage. As these students grow and prepare themselves for careers and being global citizens, knowing multiple languages will give them an edge over others who are not.
Roxbury currently has close to a 100 English Language Learners in its K-12 schools and these students are developing English acquisition which can continue to develop at home along with their native language. Click here to read more about this workshop on our webpage under "In the News".

Instrument Test Drive Invitation for 4th Graders and their Families - May 24th
The Roxbury High School Instrumental Music department will be holding a Roxbury Instrument Test Drive for all 4th grade students.
This event is designed as an "open house" style - come and visit any time that is convenient for you and your family between 4-7 p.m. in the Roxbury High School cafeteria located at 1 Bryant Drive in Succasunna on Thursday, May 24th. Click here to RSVP
.
Our goal at the Instrument Test Drive is to expose your child to the instruments that are available next year and your child will have the opportunity to play each one. A teacher will guide your child through a few basic steps of creating an initial sound on each instrument. As teachers, we want to match your child to an instrument where he or she will find success!
