Roxbury Indoor Percussion ended their 2019 season in first place in Scholastic A Class at the USBands Indoor Percussion Championships at Fair Lawn High School on March 31st. Although this group has competed in Championships before, this is the first time that Roxbury has placed first at this event.
Roxbury competed against three other groups in Championships. Out of four judged categories, Roxbury placed first in Music, Visual, and Visual Effect and finished with an overall score of 92.75.
This year's show, "We Built Our Own World" features musical arrangements by David Reeves and show design by Michael Thompson. The show tells a story of the manic energy of a new project, reflective qualities as the idea is beginning to take shape and the excitement of it all coming together.

Lincoln/Roosevelt School Holds Q & A with Author
Students in Roxbury Township used the marvels of technology once again to make connections in their studies Wednesday morning thanks to the Lincoln/Roosevelt PTO and Media Specialist Karen Fasino. Fifth and sixth graders at LRS were able to experience a virtual Q&A session with author Rob Buyea.
Buyea is known by the students for his "Mr. Terupt" and "Perfect Score" book series. With the use of Google Hangouts, Buyea held two half-hour long sessions, one for sixth grade and one for fifth. Each grade was divided into three locations, the Media Center, the Auditorium, and the Team Room to create a more intimate setting for asking questions via Skype.
Many of the students having been familiar with Buyea's work asked him numerous questions about his writing career and his inspiration for characters and storylines.
Students from both grades submitted their questions to Mrs. Fasino via a Google Form prior to the session. Click here to read more from our website under "In the News".
Nixon School Celebrates National Paraprofessional Day
National Paraprofessional Day was Wednesday, April 3rd! Knowing how much our paraprofessionals do to help our students, us, and our school community, it seems only fitting that we honor them in a special way.
At Nixon School, their Social Committee organized a Sweet Treat Cart that rolled through the hall making a personal visit to each para so that they can make their special dessert plate to enjoy at their lunch.

Franklin Holds Kids Heart Challenge to Raise Funds
Students at Franklin Elementary School worked in conjunction with the American Heart Association and the Franklin School Early Act Club to hold the 2019 Kids Heart Challenge on Thursday, March 28th.
This fun and exciting event helped students learn about their heart while helping others to raise money for the American Heart Association.
Organizer and the Franklin Physical Education Teacher Russ Redmond shared, "The purpose of the program was to bring awareness to living a heart-healthy life."
All students in the school participated in six different cardio stations that included short jump ropes, long jump ropes, step aerobics, bean bag shuttle, dice fitness exercises, and hands and heart activities during 40-minute periods.
Redmond added, "In addition to learning about making healthy choices and the importance of daily exercise, the school raised over $6,000 for the American Heart Association."

Franklin Teacher Receives Walmart Community Grant
Roxbury Schools is excited to announce that Franklin fourth grade teacher Maria Gallagher recently received a $500 grant from Walmart Giving. Franklin Principal Lisa Ferrare and Maria Gallagher visited the local Ledgewood Walmart recently and met with Walmart's Community Involvement Coordinator, Sharon Wallman, also a former teacher who nominated Gallagher back in 2015 for the Walmart Teacher of the Year recognition.
Gallagher applied for this grant to help provide additional enrichment materials to the fourth grade curriculum at the school. The funds will likely be used towards math manipulatives to assist in number fluency in centers and in small group instruction.
A grant like this will benefit the students through a multi-sensory approach to learning. Having concrete materials in front of them will further support student understanding. Click here to read more from our website under "In the News".
Autism Awareness at Franklin School
Staff at Franklin Elementary School paid $5 to wear their Autism Awareness shirts and jeans to school on Tuesday, April 2nd in recognition of National Autism Awareness Day.
Franklin Special Education Teacher Alyssa Maksymiv helped organize the sale of all the shirts, which a portion of the sale went to their $225 donation.
Athletic Training Day at Roxbury High School
In celebration of National Athletic Training month, Roxbury High School hosted an Athletic Training Day. RHS Athletic Trainers Joe Koch and Corey Forlenza organized an interactive event to inform high school and middle school students about the profession of athletic training.
In conjunction with the Seton Hall University Graduate Athletic Training Program, the students enrolled in the Roxbury HS "Foundations of Athletic Training" course as well as the RHS Sports Medicine Club, a program was created which included guest lecturer, Johnny Rodriguez, ATC Union High School. Mr. Rodriguez spoke to students about types of movement, injury assessment, and rehabilitation. Students also had the opportunity to participate in six different stations run by Seton Hall University graduate students which covered topics in the field of athletic training such as nutrition, functional movement screening, rooted rehab, taping, spine boarding (presented by the Roxbury H.S. Foundations of Athletic Training students), and concussion evaluations.
After the stations were completed a quiz bowl was held to challenge the students. Seventy-five students from five high schools attended the successful event!

Dramatic Scene from 'Every 15 Minutes'
The heart wrenching Every 15 Minutes anti drunk-driving simulation was held again at Roxbury High School on Tuesday, April 2nd-3rd. The realistic simulation uses high school students as both the driver and the victim.
The Every 15 Minutes program is a two-day program challenging students to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, the responsibility of making mature decisions and the impact their decisions have on family, friends, their community, and many others.
The program is very dramatic and emotional. The students are constantly reminded about how the choices THEY make affect everyone around them.
This program would not have been possible if it wasn't for the Roxbury Township Police Department and Emergency Personnel. We thank them for their countless hours that don't go unnoticed planning for events like this to educate our students and to try and prevent tragedy from happening in the first place. It was a
n amazing effort by all those involved!
Build It, Practice It, Apply It!
Help support Franklin ISL Teacher Michelle Marzocca with her DonorsChoose campaign. "
Help me give my students these hands on materials that will help them to improve their number sense and reach their goals of math fact fluency."
Her project: These hands on materials and strategies will help my students to build their conceptual understanding of math fact fluency. With as little as 10 minutes of practice each day, these students will improve their basic fact fluency which will enable them to apply these skills to more challenging concepts!
With your help, I will look forward to using these materials to BUILD conceptual understanding, PRACTICE these skills and APPLY them to more challenging tasks! Click here to go to her DonorsChoose page.

Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Slam Dunk the Junk - Keep Morris County Litter Free! - Deadline Apr 10
Two Grant Opportunity for Public Schools in Morris County (grades 5-12) sponsored by the MCMUA and Morris County Clean Communities. Schools can apply for grants for litter cleanups or poster contests or a combination of both.
The deadline for submitting an application is April 10, 2019.
According to Liz Sweedy, Morris County Clean Communities coordinator, "Keep Morris County Litter Free" is part of the "Slam Dunk the Junk" statewide initiative sponsored by the New Jersey Clean Communities Council, which focuses on conducting litter cleanups, enforcing anti-litter regulations and changing the attitudes of "litterbugs" through education.
To quality for a grant, a public school must conduct a litter cleanup on at least two acres of school grounds, which may include ball fields and wooded areas, between April 10 and June 6, 2019. A minimum of 20 students and their adult supervisors much participate in each cleanup. After the cleanup has been conducted and the proper paperwork has been received and reviewed by the MCMUA, the school will receive a $500 grant to purchase outdoor receptacles for either recyclables or trash, or indoor receptacles for recyclables only, Sweedy said.
A second and optional component of the grant program is a school-run poster contest for Morris County public school students in grades 5-12. County winners of this contest will receive a $200 gift certificate and have their posters replicated on a recycling receptacle for their schools. Click here to find out more about these grant opportunities.
What's stormwater got to do with clean drinking water? - Apr 18
When it rains, chemicals and other dangerous pollutants on our streets, parking lots, and roads get washed into storm drains and are funneled into our drinking water supplies and other waterways that our children play in.
This makes stormwater pollution one of New Jersey's greatest threats to our clean drinking water, especially in towns that don't have the resources to manage flooding.
To learn more about the stormwater issues affecting your community, please join us on Thursday, April 18th for a meet-and-greet with Mayor Wilsusen and Ron Smith, Chairman of the Lake Hopatcong Commission. They're coming together to discuss the serious consequences that flooding and polluted stormwater runoff have for residents of Jefferson Township and nearby Lake Hopatcong, and to address any questions you might have. Click here to read more and to register for this event from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.
FREE TREES! To New Jersey Residents - Apr 25

Seedlings distributed to shore towns may include bayberry or beach plum, shrubs commonly found on dunes and in other coastal environments. Morris County MUA Urges Residents to Put Out Only Acceptable Items for Curbside Recycling
In an effort to capture only
acceptable
materials during curbside recycling collection, the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA), will implement a "tag-it and leave-it" inspection program this summer in the municipalities served by the MUA's "all-in-one" single-stream curbside recycling collection program.
Due to recent enforcement of rigorous restrictions banning unacceptable materials from the curbside recycling stream, the MUA has been assessing unacceptable items in the recycling stream.
The most common and problematic unacceptable materials
(contaminants) found mixed with acceptable recyclables include:
- plastic bags
- plastic film/plastic packaging
- foam (Styrofoam)
- hangers (plastic, metal, wood)
- food waste
- wood scraps
- plastic bottles/containers coded #3, #4, #6 & #7 (only plastic bottles/containers coded #1, #2 & #5 are acceptable).
For curbside collection, recyclables must be loose in a reusable container with handles and a lid. Also, recyclables must be empty, clean and dry (no food residue).
