Message from Superintendent Loretta Radulic
This week's events have served to remind us that we must work together to ensure a safe and secure environment for our children. Our goal is that students arrive at school with a mindset focused on learning. We want them to be curious, collaborative, and creative learners. We want them to feel safe.
As the adults, it's our responsibility to ensure their safety and to create an environment conducive to a strong foundation for learning. As such, we must recognize the importance of valuable lessons.
- If you see something, say something. Do not wait for another person to make a report. Students should share their concerns with adults who can bring it to the attention of the proper authorities.
- Words, actions, and images are powerful. Threats of any kind are not a joke! They will be taken seriously by both the school district and the Roxbury Police no matter what the intention may be.
- Children are inexperienced. It is the responsibility of the adults to set and model expectations. If we want to keep them safe, we need to teach them what is and what is not acceptable.
- In today's society, social media has become a place where people feel they can disperse their immediate thoughts without reflection, where they believe that they must share everything, from what they are eating to where they are attending college, and where they believe they must always be connected. We must teach our children and help them to understand that what they say and do determines how others view their character. No words, actions, or images occur without a consequence. We must also teach them that there is no eraser on the internet or amid social media. The conversations and learning begins at home and is supported in the schools.
Tragedies can be avoided through thoughtful communication and a willingness to take action. To reiterate my first point, if you see something, say something. Let's work together and keep our community safe.
Roxbury's Indoor Percussion Competes in Upcoming Shows
The Roxbury Indoor Percussion is in its fourth competitive season with their largest group yet!
This year's show, entitled "The Darkness," features original music and arrangements by David Reeves. The show is based on the moment when the human spirit has the veil of darkness thrust upon them - thriving in all that is destructive and despaired. Introduced, tempted, and finally engulfed into the only world they have ever known.
The group will be competing in one more show on Sunday, April 8th at South Brunswick High School in their championships!
Come check out Roxbury Indoor Percussion's Friends and Family Championship Sendoff Performance on Saturday, April 7th at 3 p.m. in the Roxbury High School gym located at 1 Bryant Drive in Succasunna. It will be the final performance before their 2018 Championship.

With 'Project Ring,' Teens Tackle Tiny Beads to Help Roxbury Social Services - April 6th
Three Roxbury High School students are hoping you'll visit the Roxbury Fire Co. 1 station at 122 Main Street in Succasunna on Friday to check out the custom, hand-made bracelets they are selling to help Roxbury Social Services.
Called "Project Ring," the charitable effort is being led by 18-year-old Ashley Wyble, a Roxbury High School senior and Ledgewood resident, who is also an emergency medical technician with Roxbury Fire and EMS along with Sarah Horsman and Jeffrey Brodhecker, who is also an EMT.
From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the fire house, the teens will be selling various types of bracelets, grouped by color, that can be customized or augmented with charms. The bracelets cost $5 (or two for $8) to $15.

Orwell's Animal Farm Compared to Communist Cuba - One Parent's Account
Eighth graders at Eisenhower Middle School heard first-hand stories from Alex Del Rosario, one of their peer's father on growing up in communist Cuba on March 16th.
Del Rosario shared how growing up during that time influenced his appreciation for what he has today. He spoke to the students at EMS sharing a connection between his childhood and the events and characters in George Orwell's classic story, Animal Farm, which students are currently reading.
Animal Farm
is a satirical tale based on the Russian Revolution. The allegory, set in England, has the characters portrayed by animals mirroring the communist leaders and the events reflecting the communist society of Russia. Roxbury Baseball Updates
Roxbury Baseball Opens Season With a Milestone Win for Its Coach
The Roxbury High School baseball team won its season opener Thursday in a chilly game against West Morris Central, a dramatic 9th inning victory that marked coach Greg Trotter's 300th career win.
Trotter, a former Rowan University baseball star, is entering his 19th year coaching Gaels baseball.
The frigid temperatures and steady winds didn't stop the Gaels from beating West Morris 3-2 but it took them two extra innings to do so. The game was tied at 2-2 by the 2nd inning and although there were opportunities to score, nothing materialized until the 9th inning.

The 2018 Color Fun Run will have a special musical performance by the group Found Vegas, an alternative music group from Essex County. The proceeds of this year's Color Fun Run will be raised in honor of Matt Adonis, a 4th grader at Nixon Elementary School who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year (read more of Matt's story below). We are happy to join Team Matt!
If you purchase tickets in advance, they are $25. Tickets will be $30 the day of the event. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the Color Fun Run will begin at 10 a.m. The first 400 people to register will receive a t-shirt!

The Fifth Annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party, at Hopatcong State Park in Landing, is scheduled for May 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosted by the Lake Hopatcong Foundation (LHF), the event gives scores of businesses and organizations an opportunity to showcase their work, attracting thousands of visitors to the popular lakeside venue.

With Big Games Coming to Roxbury, USA Fistball Offers Coach Lessons
Being that Roxbury is going to be the
host town for the 2018 U18 World Fistball Championships this summer, the organizers are hoping more young people give the obscure sport a try.
Toward that end, the United States Fistball Association is offering seminars to local coaches, athletic directors and educators.
The seminars will take place July 13 and July 14 during the big tournament.
The championship games are scheduled to happen July 11 through July 15 at Horseshoe Lake park in Succasunna. U18 men's and women's national fistball teams from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Chile, Italy, New Zealand and India will compete in the international tournament.
The seminars will begin, on July 13, with a 9 a.m. to noon session on "basic practical training measures." At 2 p.m. participants will go to the fields to watch the games being played, said the USFA. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
U.S. Fistball Recruiting Players for World Championship Coming to Roxbury
The United States Fistball Association is looking for young men and women under the age of 18 who are interested in competing as part of the U.S. National Team, said U.S. Fistball Association President Bob Feid.
With fistball's similarity to volleyball, athletes experienced in volleyball are well-suited and able to learn the technique and rules very quickly. However, anyone under 18 interested in participating is welcome.
Tryouts are being held at the Roxbury High School gym, 1 Bryant Dr, Succasunna, with indoor practices continuing until spring when they move outdoor to the Swim and Sport Club on Emmans Road, also in Roxbury.

Roxbury Arts Alliance Presents War of the Worlds Radio Show - Apr 7
Set in Grover Mills, NJ, the play is a loose adaptation of the H. G. Wells classic.
The simulated "news bulletins" of the original broadcast suggested to many contemporaneous listeners
that an actual alien invasion was currently in progress and, as a result, there were instances of
panicked evacuation throughout the US, especially in New Jersey! Do you ever wish you had been
beside the players of the Mercury Theatre when they first performed War of the Worlds live on air
and spread panic to the listening audience? The performance raised outrage in the general public
in the 1930s and also raised the profile of the theatre's director, Orson Welles. The radio play features
real actors wearing period costumes, theatrical lighting and the show includes
vintage commercials and even hundreds of sound effects!
Tickets for General Admission are $20 tickets and available online, RAA Members $15* (*Members need to call or email to reserve at this price. Tickets available at the door if not already sold out.) For ticket information call (862) 219-1379 or go online at www.roxburyartsalliance.org. Click here for more information in our virtual backpack!
