Roxbury Schools Placed on the College Board's 9th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for Significant Gains in Student Access and Success

Roxbury Township Public Schools is one of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 9th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. To be included on the 9th Annual Honor Roll, Roxbury Township Public Schools had to, since 2016, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.

Emilie Bacchetta, Roxbury's Director of Guidance shared, "At Roxbury High School we are able to offer 20 advanced placement courses to our students as well as being an AP Capstone School. We are very proud of all the hard work our AP teachers have done in pushing our students to succeed."

National data from 2018 show that among American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students with a high degree of readiness for AP, only about half are participating. The first step to getting more of these students to participate is to give them access. Courses must be made available, gatekeeping must stop, and doors must be equitably opened. Roxbury Township Public Schools is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds. Click here to read more about this achievement on our website under "In the News".

Broadway Shows Bus Trip to NYC
Choose from two great shows!
Kiss Me, Kate or Disney's Aladdin on Saturday, March 2nd.

Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. Once again, Roundabout catapults you to a musical comedy heaven, with a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate. In Cole Porter's sparkling 1948 musical, the warring lovers of The Taming of Shrew are causing trouble both onstage and off. While putting on a musical version of Shakespeare's play, exes Fred Graham (Will Chase) and Lilli Vanessi (Kelli O'Hara) can't decide if they're enraged, enamored or enormously confused whenever they cross paths out of character.

Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.

This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin  also showcases an incomparable design team with exquisite sets, costumes, and lighting by multiple Tony Award winners Bob Crowley, Gregg Barnes, and Natasha Katz.

Christmas Light Show Benefits Morris Co. Cop Battling 9/11 Cancer
The Katz Family's annual Christmas light show is brightening lives with more than just lights. This year, their over-the-top display will benefit a Roxbury police officer fighting a 9/11-related cancer.  Put on by Rob and Melissa Katz, over 40,000 lights dance along to music on the front lawn of their Succasunna home. Visitors are asked to make a donation to benefit Tom DeNicola, a Roxbury police officer and Marine veteran battling multiple myeloma caused by chemical exposures at the World Trade Center in the weeks following 9/11. Donations can be left in a secure mailbox. Click here to read more from Patch.com.

Fundraisers Aim to Help Roxbury Firefighter Battle Cancer
The brother of Roxbury firefighter and business owner Jeff Poissant is hoping to raise $100,000 to help defray the medical bills that are piling up as his sibling fights cancer.  So far, the  GoFundMe  page  created Dec. 5 by Alan Poissant has raised about $10,000. "I put $100,000 (as the target amount)," he said. "I didn't want to shoot small. I was trying to go big."

He aimed high because, even with insurance, his brother's out-of-pocket medical expenses - combined with the fact that the man can no longer work - could be devastating to the family. Jeff, 54, who owns the Succasunna Service Center in Kenvil, has a wife and three children aged 17 to 23.  According to Alan, Jeff was diagnosed with prostate cancer a while ago, but the doctors said the disease was "contained" and didn't warrant immediate attention.

As documented on the GoFundMe page, the real cause of Jeff's pain was metastasized prostate cancer. "Currently the cancer is in his skull, spine, left scapula, several ribs, left hip, right pubic bone, tail bone, neck muscle, the muscle around his scapula, and some regions around his brain and other locations," wrote Alan on the page.

Alan's call for help has produced significant support from people in Roxbury who know him and his family, including those in the fire department and those involved with Roxbury High School sports. Fire Co. #1 is selling wrist bans to help raise money. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury and how you can help!

Roxbury Cops Team with Claus
In addition to fighting crime, Roxbury police will also be battling Christmas Day disappointment this year, it was announced today.  To bolster the effort, the department has partnered with Santa Claus, said the department.

"The police department will be assisting Santa with delivery of gifts this year," the police said on their Facebook page. "We are asking the community to help us by dropping off new, unopened toys. These gifts will be given to families in town who may be struggling this holiday season and the rest will be given to Toys for Tots."

The police department said Roxbury officers will be at police headquarters on Route 46 in Ledgewood through Dec. 20 to accept the unopened gifts and it encouraged children to accompany parents in bringing the items to the police station. The officers on duty "will take the time to thank your child for giving such an important gift and we'll snap a picture to post on our page," the department added. Roxbury Police to Help Seniors, Disabled With Smoke/CO Detector Checks
Having dealt recently with the death of a senior citizen who succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning, Roxbury police offered to help elderly and disabled residents check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

The police department said an officer will check the units' expiration dates, assist with testing them and change their batteries if necessary. "The police will come to your house and climb a ladder to make sure the batteries are good and that the detector is working properly," said department spokeswoman Jen Dillard.

People needing the police department's assistance are asked to call (973) 448-2025 to schedule an appointment. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

County takes first steps to replace Roxbury's Landing Road Bridge
After years of delays, work is scheduled to begin on the replacement of the Landing Road bridge in the Landing section of the township next year.  A public information center on plans to replace the very busy Landing Road bridge was held Tuesday, Dec. 4, at town hall in Ledgewood.

The information session, co-sponsored by Morris County and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), featured the project consultant, T-Y Lin International, which offered public presentations on the project.  The estimated $16 million project is in the final design stage, according to a release issued by the county.

The existing Landing Road Bridge dates to 1907 and carries an average of 25,000 vehicles daily. It is a two span reinforced concrete arch bridge that is nearly 30-feet wide and 136-feet long.  The proposed new bridge would have two 12-foot inner lanes and two 15-foot outer lanes, with 6-foot sidewalks on either side.  Construction is anticipated to begin in sometime in the period between summer of 2020 to spring 2021, and work is expected to last for up to two years.  Current plans call for one lane of traffic in each direction to be maintained during construction.

In addition to the public information session, Morris County is accepting comments, concerns, and any information that residents may provide concerning the proposed project. Comments can be sent to: Landing Road Project Team c/o T Y Lin International, One Edgeview Drive, Hackettstown, N.J. 07840, ATTN: Mr. Michael Viglianco, Project Engineer. All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.  The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
