Surprise Military Visit at Roxbury High School
Something to warm your hearts this holiday season was a surprise military visit from 2017 Roxbury High School graduate, Morgan Timper, who stopped by RHS Thursday morning to surprise her younger brother, Jack Timper, a junior at the school.

For more than a month, Jack's dad, John Timper had been in communication with Assistant Principal Sue Simonet to set up the surprise visit. Both knew doing it around Christmas would be perfect.
In the weeks leading up to winter break, Jack had been told that they weren't sure if Morgan would be able to make it home for the holidays. "When asked if Morgan would be home for holidays, we would say we don't know. Originally she was but then she said she couldn't because she was moved from Missouri to Colorado, so we basically told him that when she went to Colorado her sergeant wouldn't give her off as it was too new of a transfer," shared Mr. Timper.

The plan was to surprise Jack in the cafeteria during his lunch period. "I stalked Jack to find out where he sat at lunch to make sure we would get in without him seeing Morgan," explained Simonet.
However, best laid plans don't always come to fruition because yesterday, Jack decided to go to the library instead. With that change of plans, Simonet brought in reinforcements and sent in Marine and RHS Principal Dominick Miller to distract Jack while Morgan entered the library. Morgan stuck up behind him and wrapped her hands over his eyes. Jack turned surprised while the two hugged each other.

Morgan will be home until December 31st and then she heads back to Colorado.  Following her graduation from RHS, Morgan attended County College of Morris before enlisting in the Army in May 2018. She was stationed in Missouri until recently and will be deployed to Afghanistan next year for a 9-12-month tour. Click here to read more of this story on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury's Gingerbread Community
Gingerbread men and women have a new home and community this holiday season thanks to the creative engineers in second grade at Kennedy Elementary School.

Students in Liz Szigeti, Justin Iazzeti, and Kathy Byrne's classes took their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) challenge to a whole new level when creating their gingerbread communities. The second graders had to learn how to engineer gingerbread houses that could stand on their own.

In small groups, Szigeti's class decided they wanted their gingerbread community to represent some of their favorite places in Roxbury. Houses were on display this week at Kennedy Elementary School for students and families to enjoy. Click here to read more about this STEM Challenge on our website under "In the News".

Jefferson School's First Grade Giving Tree

First graders at Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township held their annual Giving Tree project during the month of December. The students collected hats, gloves, scarves, and socks school-wide to donate to Roxbury Social Services.

Brittany Tiger, first-grade teacher shared, "This is such as great program to do with our students each year. The students love to do something for our community and be a part of something so special."

When donations were brought in, students could add their names to the bulletin board in the school hallway.  "I brought in a hat and some gloves and added my name to our tree. We collected lots of hats and gloves and now people who need them can get them." Explained first grader Taryn Jarvis.

Jefferson School is excited to donate such generous gifts this year! Click here to see this story on our website under "In the News".

Portrait of a Graduate #AtTheRox - Next Session: Feb 13
Here in Roxbury, we are all connected by a shared aspiration: that all of our children have an educational experience preparing them to be effective lifelong learners and contributors. More than ever, our children's educational experience must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but it must also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st century skills our young people need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.

Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate is a community led process that allows all stakeholders (parents, community stakeholders, educators, and most importantly, students) help provide strategic direction and guidance towards a redesign of the overall educational experience for students. It is our hope that this collective vision reinvigorates and re-engages students, educators, and community stakeholders. Providing feedback for Portrait of a Graduate is important for parents of all learners since this is a K-12 visioning process.

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts to help us in this visioning process and please know you are all welcome to our public Portrait of a Graduate meeting this February 13 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Roosevelt Auditorium at 34 North Hillside Avenue, Succasunna, NJ 07876. TransOptions Challenges Students in Hydrogen Car Challenge
Incredibly talented students from Morris County and across North Jersey raced their specially designed vehicles to the finish line on Wednesday (Dec. 12) in the 12th annual Hydrogen Car Challenge (H2 Challenge) hosted by TransOptions, and held at the New Providence Middle School.

Thirty nine teams and more than 100 students from eleven schools from four New Jersey counties competed in the H2 Challenge, which seeks to promote technology in education and foster student interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM ).

Participating high schools included Boonton, Madison, Morris Knolls, Roxbury, and the Morris County School of Technology from Morris County. Other competitors were High Point Regional, Kittatinny Regional, and Newton high schools from Sussex County; New Providence and Union County Magnet high schools from Union County; and Piscataway High School from Middlesex County.

"STEM education is essential in today's competitive technological world and we want to make sure the students in New Jersey are getting the best chance at making a mark on those industries," said TransOptions President Dan Callas.

"These programs allow my students to think independently, build skills and gets them ready for careers outside of college. H2 fits into Next Generation Science Standards and allows students that might not excel academically and traditional pathways to really become great problem solvers while building their self esteem, said Denise Glenn, Science Supervisor at Roxbury Township Public Schools. Holidays Keep Roxbury Club Happily Helpful
The Roxbury High School Interact Club, an arm of the Roxbury Rotary Club, has been busy this month doing good things for the holidays.  The club's most recent endeavor involved delivering gifts to residents and patients at Merry Heart senior Care in Succasunna, said Rotarian Steve Alford, a club advisor.  "We put together 49 gift bags filled with six or seven things like lotions and crossword puzzles," said Alford. "They did it just to spread a little holiday cheer."

Alford said the bags and the items they contained were purchased by the Rotary Club. The Interact Club members stuffs the bags and does the delivery. Alford praised one of the Interact Club presidents, Courtney Graf, for "doing an amazing job" with the Merry Heart project.

Four days earlier, members of the club brought 13 big garbage bags stuffed with teddy bears and toys to St. Peters University Hospital. "It's the same hospital where our most recent Color Run recipient, Matt Adonis, received his treatment," Alford noted on Facebook.

He said the toys and bears were collected by Kennedy Elementary School, the Interact Club and a number of other clubs at the high school including the peer leaders and the Wrestling Club. Alford gave "special thanks" to teacher Allyson Spargo, who is also an Interact Club advisor.  On Dec. 8, a group of Interact Club members could be found singing outside the Succasunna ShopRite on behalf of The Salvation Army. It's about a year behind the initially proposed schedule, but if things go right from now on, a planned upgrade to Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna - particularly an artificial turf sports field - should be substantially finished by autumn, said town officials.  To meet that goal for the $1.5 million project, the township plans to issue a request for proposals (RFP) next month, said Roxbury Township Manager John Shepherd and Roxbury Councilman Fred Hall at a recent township council meeting.

"We have some very, very tight timelines we have to hit in order to do the RFP in January," Hall said. Shepherd said the town and its consultant are "in the process of finalizing the design" of the project and should be able to go to bid in early January.

The plan calls for resurfacing, with artificial turf, Field 1 at the recreation complex and replacing the adjacent softball fields with a new irrigated sod multipurpose field that will have a scoreboard and bleachers. Also planned are more parking areas and a digital sign on Eyland Avenue. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Officials Urge Everybody to Create 'Smart 911' Profile
All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.  The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
