Roxbury Community Asset Mapping for Sustainable Jersey certification
As part of our initiative to achieve Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we need to complete a Roxbury Community Asset Mapping. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the greater community context.
We've come up with 275 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations so far but we need your help in finishing this list.
LRS Last Stop for Toys for Tots
Lincoln/Roosevelt Elementary School capped off another year of collecting toys for Toys for Tots for Picatinny Arsenel on Thursday. Organized by the Student Council, under the guidance and direction of Karl Corino, this grade 5-6 school spent the month of December promoting and collecting new unwrapped toys for Picatinny.
Student Council representatives urged their school to participate each day through morning announcements and posters hung in classrooms and around the school.
Corino's fifth-grade class and the student council bundled up the toys and themselves Thursday morning to march the 341 new toys out to the waiting army personnel vehicle from Picatinny. Click here to read more about Lincoln/Roosevelt's Student Council and Toy Drive.

More than 100 items have been collected school-wide.
First grader, Zachary Orban said, "I brought in a hat and some gloves for someone who needs them. I hung my name on our Giving Tree in the hallway and it was fun!"
The Giving Tree is filled with all who donated.
Barbara Derrick, first grade teacher at the school shared, "The spirit of giving is contagious! We had so many students donate that we couldn't fit them all in one picture! Happy holidays!" Click here to read more!
Roxbury Grads Return to Impart College Wisdom
While home on winter break, four recent Roxbury graduates returned to their old stomping grounds to impart some valuable wisdom on a handful of high school seniors and juniors in Anthony McMichael's Ethical Studies class.
Twins Anna and Haley Cook, Emma McDonald, and Dominique Tye re-acclimated quickly upon their return to Roxbury High School. It was as if they never left. They were touching base with former teammates, peers, and teachers before coming to answer questions in McMichael's class.
The returning freshmen began by introducing themselves. All four are currently enrolled in four-year universities along the east coast. Three of the four are on a defined career path while one is still undecided. Anna and Haley went south and are at the University of Central Florida studying nursing and accounting respectively. Emma is a bio pre-med major at the University of South Carolina while Dominique is undecided at Stockton University.
McMichael offered these ladies the opportunity to come in and discuss their transition from high school to college life, covering numerous topics.
"I brought the college students in to discuss the transition. The college students spoke about the academic, social, and emotional adjustments to life beyond high school and they reflected on how RHS prepared them for their next phase in life," explained McMichael.
These young adults spent 50 minutes answering questions by McMichael and students like Victoria Losey and Alexandria Bartlett about their experiences, activities, as well as their preparation for being away from home. Click here to read more about the feedback these grads provided to these current students.
EMS Builders Club Promotes Kindness
Members of the Eisenhower Middle School's Builder's Club recently painted positive kindness messages on rocks in an effort to promote and spread kindness. Some of the members took the rocks over to Horseshoe Lake and placed them in various spots in hopes that others may find them.
Club advisors, Marie Pessolano and Elizabeth Tucker shared that "If the rocks are found, there is a message on the bottom to Snapchat a picture of the rock with our filter #KindnessRox."

Students at Eisenhower Middle School have a new extracurricular academic program they can take advantage of this year with its new EMS Spanish Club offered to grades seven and eight.
The club offers students the ability to meet others who enjoy the Spanish culture. It was established to promote understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic culture while promoting a feeling of friendship, community and school service within Roxbury.
The program encourages students who both speak the language and those who don't to participate in learning about the Spanish culture. It will teach members about pop culture icons and their influence on society all around them.
Polar Express Day at Jefferson School
The Kindergarten classes at Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township transported some of its youngest students to a magical place this week. The kindergarten staff transformed the classrooms to create a Polar Express Day.
"We dressed in our pajamas, watched the Polar Express movie, had cookies and milk, and danced to songs about the holidays," shared Kelly Lamont, Kindergarten teacher.

New Security Sign-In Procedures Being Test Piloted at Roxbury High School
Guests visiting Roxbury High School during the day will need to come prepared. Beginning in January, the high school will be test piloting a new visitor management system called LobbyGuard where individuals will need to show identification in order to enter the building whether for an appointment or to drop something off. This check-in process takes less than five minutes.
Each visitor will be signed in digitally and have their picture taken. An ID badge will be printed with their name, picture, reason for visit, and the date. Individuals are required to wear these ID badges on their left chest the entire time they are at Roxbury High School. When exiting the building, their ID badges will be returned and scanned allowing them to leave the building.
This new technology allows district administrators to view at any point in time the visitors in our facilities and for what reason. During the check-in procedure, the system performs instant background checks with the national sexual offender databases and creates customized lists of known local offenders and unwanted guests. All these protocols are put in place to keep students, staff, and other visitors safe while in our facilities. Click here to read more about these changes.

Roxbury Wrestling Updates
Community Service Brings Roxbury Wrestling Team Together
As Giancarlo Gordils sorted through massive piles of toys at Roxbury Social Services on Monday morning, his eyes suddenly lit up. The Roxbury senior had found "a really cool Nerf gun," a big upgrade on the ones he'd had when he was younger.
It made the Gaels' service project a little more meaningful. The wrestling team helped organize Toys For Tots for township residents, the culmination of a project to bring joy to local kids.
Toys were donated at Roxbury High School, including around 200 gathered by the wrestlers themselves. They also were collected by Fire Company 2 outside Walmart, at Weichert Realtors on Route 10, through Connect Church and the Roxbury Rotary, and dropped off by residents. Arrangement Salon provided presents specifically for teenagers.
The Gaels start the season today at the Dover Tournament still stinging from falling short against West Morris in a NJSIAA North 1 Group IV semifinal last winter. Roxbury returns district champions John Tesoriero, Ben Temples and Michael Roumes, as well as Dominic LaRusso and Scott Jarosz, who placed in the top five at the Morris County Tournament.
The Gaels' lower and middle weights are particularly strong, important given their tough schedule which includes trips to Watchung Hills and Ocean, as well as Kittatinny's holiday tourney.

Roxbury Boys Basketball Beats Mountain Lakes - December 18th
The Roxbury High School boys basketball team stumbled in its first outing but bounced back Monday in its second game of the season by beating Mountain Lakes.
It was hardly a trouncing, as the Gaels won by a mere single point, defeating the Lakers 48 to 47. But a win is a win and it brought the Gaels' record to 1-1.

Coordinated by the Ferro Monte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the event included visits, and speeches, by Rep. Leonard Lance, (R-7th Dist.), Picatinny Arsenal Garrison Commander Lt. Colonel Jeffery Ivey and Kenvil VFW Post 2833 Commander John Lehnert.
The wreaths were placed on veteran graves at the First Presbyterian and United Methodist Church joint cemetery in Succasunna and at the Flanders Hillside Cemetery. Every veteran grave in both cemeteries received a wreath, said organizer Kim Armstrong.
She noted the Roxbury event was one of more than 1,400 across the nation, including at Arlington National Cemetery, where wreaths were placed during the morning. Nearly 1.6 million wreaths were purchased by people wishing to participate. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
For Roxbury's Port Morris Fire House, Just One More Trip Around the Sun
The end is coming for the old firehouse on Main Street in Port Morris. If all goes as planned, the place that Roxbury Fire Co. 2 called home for many decades has about a year left.
Then, sometime in 2019, heavy equipment will tumble the building to make way for new homes to be built by Morris Habitat for Humanity. If it all works out, Port Morris will lose a timeworn structure and gain about 12 new residents.
The organization is applying for grant money to proceed with its plan to build on the site a pair of 2-bedroom duplex houses that will be sold to people earning $35,000 to $72,000 per year. The "affordable housing" development will be the third created in Roxbury by Morris Habitat.

Roxbury Told Hopatcong Weed Fund Won't (Easily) Evaporate
The Roxbury Mayor and Council was assured recently that a proposed law allocating $500,000 each year for Lake Hopatcong weed control and other maintenance would be a far more stable source of money than past funding plans.
The pledge was made by state Assemblyman Anthony Bucco (R-25th Dist.) who also serves as Roxbury Township counsel. He did so at the last Roxbury council meeting after Roxbury Councilman Jim Rilee, while supportive of the legislation, warned that money promised by Trenton has a way of being withdrawn over time.

Roxbury "Friends" Group Needs Help in Helping the Downtrodden
Bad luck, bad decisions, bad karma, bad economy. Whatever the reason, there are people in Roxbury living in the woods, sleeping in their cars, barely eating and otherwise not exactly living the American Dream, according to Kim Armstrong.
She's the treasurer of a non-profit organization called Friends of Roxbury Social Services. It's a group that, like the unfortunate people it helps, operates in the background of daily life in Roxbury. Its mission is to help Roxbury Social Services assist the less fortunate cope with the myriad challenges and problems that go hand-in-hand with poverty.
To be able to do its work, Friends of Roxbury Social Services relies largely on donations. It is currently
running a fundraiser on Facebook
and hoping people in Roxbury will donate a few dollars.
People interested in helping the organization can do so a number of ways. In addition to the
Facebook fundraiser,, the Friends of Roxbury Social Services has a way of accepting donations at its
website. Financial donations (checks payable to Friends of Roxbury Social Services) can also be sent to FRSS, 72 Eyland Ave., Succasunna, NJ 07876.
Those wishing to donate directly to Social Services can bring food and other goods to the Roxbury Social Services center at 72 Eyland Ave. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Social Services supported 6,107 people in 2016, according to the Friends group.
