Volunteers Bring Colorful Words of Inspiration to a Roxbury School's Bathrooms
Volunteers recently turned four bathrooms at Roxbury's Franklin Elementary School into "spaces of kindness and inspiration" by painting on their walls inspirational quotes and colorful murals.  The project was initiated in January by the Franklin School Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The group's president, Lori Romano, used Facebook to request help from the community.

It wasn't long before there was an overwhelming response from parents willing to donate their time and/or money. Some local businesses also agreed to help by providing supplies, including the Sherwin Williams store in Ledgewood and the Home Depot in Succasunna.

Franklin School Guidance Counselor Gail LaCosta collected a quote from each classroom for the project and assisted with some of the supplies. Franklin School Principal Lisa Ferrare worked with the buildings and grounds department to make arrangements for the classroom bathrooms to be open for the school's aftercare program.  The project took about three weeks to finish. The volunteers worked Fridays between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. and completed the transformation of the bathrooms on Feb. 9.

Four Roxbury High School students - Emily Christel, McKenzie Morgan, Cammy Messer and Camile Guglielmo - chipped in to paint a rainbow mural in the 3rd- and 4th-grade girl's bathroom.  Often, children experiencing bad days will escapes to the bathroom, figured the PTA parents. The goal of the project was to help those children feel better and see there can be a positive outcome for many situations.

"This act of kindness from our Roxbury community will hopefully reflect on our children at Franklin School," Romano said. "All the quotes and cheerful murals are positive images for our children that we hope they can reflect on and enjoy for years to come ... Gotta love our Franklin School parents."

Sherwin Williams store manager Kyle Royer said he was "happy to be a part of helping the community." Click here to read this story and see more inspirational images from Tap Into Roxbury.

Gaels Going Green - Did you know...

Green Tips to Give a Go from Nat Geo Kids
You can help protect the planet! Try some of these tips to conserve limited resources such as water, energy, and animals; prevent landfill waste; or decrease harmful gases, such as CO2, which contribute to  global warming . So get green and give the tips a try. Make sure to ask your parents before trying any of these tips!

Recycle and Reuse - Recycle at home! Click here for a complete list of what Roxbury recycles!

Choose rechargeable batteries, then recycle them when they die. You'd have to use hundreds of single-use batteries to equal the energy you'd get out of one rechargable battery.  The next time you have the impulse to buy a new book to read, borrow it from the library or a friend instead of buying a new copy. Sharing books is a great way to reduce waste and reuse materials.  Don't drink  bottled water ! Use a reusable bottle instead.  Buy toys that last. Toys are made, directly or indirectly, from natural resources. Choose toys that won't break easily so you aren't always buying more stuff or creating more trash.

Improve the OutdoorsPlant a deciduous (leafy) tree that loses its leaves in fall on the south side of your home. Its shade will cool your house in the summer. After the tree's leaves fall, sunlight will help warm your house in winter. Trees help clean the air we breathe. They produce oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide.

Participate in cleanup days at a beach or park. Use those outdoor trash cans! Never litter. Keep our waterways clean. When you visit a park or beach, be sure you deposit your trash in containers and volunteer at some state and national cleanups. Participate in the next Roxbury Clean Communities Clean Up. Click here to find out more about Roxbury Clean Communities.

Don't Kill That Spider! There are an estimated 40,000 species of spiders, and they all eat insects. They're an important part of the food web and provide natural pest control.
