Twelve Roxbury Students Earn Google Certification
As a Google Reference District, Roxbury Township Public Schools was afforded a pilot opportunity from Google to have students 13 years and older pilot a G-Suite Certification for Students.
Before winter break, a dozen Roxbury students at Eisenhower Middle School and Roxbury High School earned that certification. They were eighth graders Emilia Stumpo,
Camila Gil, Sean Feeney, James Winters, Luke Scaraggi, freshman Eric Folsom, juniors Adam Reingold, William Fulton, Ammar Alam, and seniors Robert Rust, Caitlin Menor and Courtney Graf.
This certification is designed to measure a student's ability to work, communicate, and collaborate in real-time using G-Suite.
Why should students be certified?
As the workplace becomes increasingly digital, collaborating effectively using real-time productivity tools is becoming a prerequisite skill. A Google Cloud certification in G Suite signals to employers a person's readiness to operate in today's modern work environment. By earning the G Suite certification, individuals prove their ability to use cloud-based tools to create and share documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and files. Students demonstrate that they can communicate effectively with email and online meeting solutions.
This voluntary program examined and verified the proficiency of key features of the G-Suite platform which included Drive, Gmail, Hangouts Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Click here to read more about this on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury Schools is exploring how credentialing for skills that are not assessed through traditional methods are so vital in the college and career readiness placement. Innovators Shouldn't Fear the 'Gotcha,' says Roxbury School Board Chief
Teachers and administrators in Roxbury schools should not be afraid of being criticized for trying new things, said Roxbury School Board President Leo Coakley on January 7th.
Coakley,
re-elected to the board in November
- chosen Monday by his colleagues to serve a second year as board president - said innovative thinking must be embraced.
"We as board members ... should encourage teachers and administrators to question how things are being done and look for ways to improve, to innovate," said Coakley, entering his seventh year on the panel.
He noted that change, while beneficial, "cannot be haphazard. It must be purposeful. It must be evaluated."
However, Coakley stressed that "teachers and administrators should not have to worry about the gotcha aspect" of suggesting something different.
"They should be able to feel free to make changes and innovation that are in conformance with our board policies and the state regulations and law and make adjustments as they need, based upon realistic evaluation as they go," he said. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Portrait of a Graduate #AtTheRox - Next Session: Feb 13
Here in Roxbury, we are all connected by a shared aspiration: that all of our children have an educational experience preparing them to be effective lifelong learners and contributors. More than ever, our children's educational experience must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but it must also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st century skills our young people need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.
Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate is a community led process that allows all stakeholders (parents, community stakeholders, educators, and most importantly, students) help provide strategic direction and guidance towards a redesign of the overall educational experience for students. It is our hope that this collective vision reinvigorates and re-engages students, educators, and community stakeholders. Providing feedback for Portrait of a Graduate is important for parents of all learners since this is a K-12 visioning process.
Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts to help us in this visioning process and please know you are all welcome to our public Portrait of a Graduate meeting this February 13 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Roosevelt Auditorium at 34 North Hillside Avenue, Succasunna, NJ 07876.

As part of a geography unit on human-environment interaction,
Caitlin Folkers' sixth grade class at Lincoln/Roosevelt created posters to hang around the school to help advise classmates on how to properly reduce, reuse, and recycle. Folkers shared, "
They were really proud and excited to be a part of the district sustainability initiative!" Sixth graders show off their artwork above.
At Eisenhower Middle School, they made one of their annual locker clean outs as a competition between seventh and eighth graders and they recycled a whopping 400 pounds of paper and plastic!
The 8th grade (all 250 students) made one HALF bag of trash and over 100 lbs of recycle paper and water bottles giving a shout out to their teachers for going digital!
The 7th grade (all 280 of them and 3 daring teachers) created over 295 lbs of recycled and old magazines from classrooms! The 7th grade
collected a lot more trash than recycling reminding us to tell our 7th grade teachers to go more digital! Many thanks though to the teachers who recycled old Scholastic Magazines and handouts to help the 7th grade win the bagel breakfast!
8th grade, will you be ready for the spring contest to take back the win?!?
MANY thanks to Armando and Maria with Aramark who helped us with the locker clean out and recycle!
EMS Green Team Member Emily List was feeling helpful recently and recruited the next generation Green Team members. Her, her brother, and few friends went out into the woods in their backyard and picked up a lot of trash! Emily shared, "Figured I'd share with you because we were like 'do it for the green team' which is really good!"
How cool is that!

Kiss Me, Kate or Disney's Aladdin on Saturday, March 2nd.
Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.
This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin

The zipline adventure park is under construction in Roxbury and reportedly will be open for business late Spring 2019.
The outdoor adventure park, as approved in 2012, will have a number of "adventure venues" including zip-lines, obstacle courses and other features "mounted on trees near the tree canopy," according to township records.
The course is being built on the hilly, tree-filled land to the west of Mount Arlington Road between Route 46 and Howard Boulevard. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.
The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
