Roxbury Register EDITORIAL: No turmoil
Remember when the Roxbury school district was full of turmoil?  Remember battling school board members? How about superintendents who weren't perceived to be doing their job correctly?  We do. And we don't miss it.

R ather, what we have now is rather ideal. We have a great superintendent in Loretta Radulic at the helm. She's open to new ideas, new innovations and new procedures, and has implemented many. She's young enough that she's not set in her ways, as some have been previously.  We have young, vibrant principals, who have largely replaced the old guard. Education is changing every day. Having fresh, younger faces in the seven schools is a good thing. It just is.

And the Board of Education? They get along just fine. Remember the days when you could bring your bowl of popcorn and just sit back and be entertained by the fireworks? We remember it well. It was a continual waste of time, energy and effort, but it went on for several years.  We're glad to see Leo Coakley back at the board's helm this year, and we're equally pleased to see Carol Scheneck named as the board's vice president. This board no longer has divisive, agenda-driven members seated, and the change has been refreshing. Board meetings are shorter. The focus is on education and school-related issues, and Coakley has done a fine job as president for the past year.  You don't attend a meeting expecting a fight. You attend expecting a presentation on some new innovative thing going on somewhere in the large district. Some miss the turmoil, we're certain. But we don't. It was most often pointless, and a waste of time.  Likewise, Scheneck has always had what's best for the community she has called home for all her life at heart. She's a hard worker and an asset to the board and the district.

The district also has something which is extremely important, and something many don't, and that's a good public relations person/department. Many districts simply can't afford it, or don't feel it's important. We do, although we must say right up front we benefit enormously from it.  We can't be there at every school event. We can't see every cool and innovative thing the kids are doing.  We see some. We get to some things, but certainly not most. That's where the district really shines. We are continually getting what we call the "good news" out of the schools.  Getting the word out there about what is going on in the K-12 district, on a day to day basis, is a pretty good endeavor that is being done well. We hope for a great year for the district. And we wish staff and students all the best. But, we really don't have to.

They are in good hands. Click here to read this editorial in the Roxbury Register.

Portrait of a Graduate #AtTheRox - Next Session: Feb 13
Here in Roxbury, we are all connected by a shared aspiration: that all of our children have an educational experience preparing them to be effective lifelong learners and contributors. More than ever, our children's educational experience must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but it must also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st century skills our young people need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.

Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate is a community led process that allows all stakeholders (parents, community stakeholders, educators, and most importantly, students) help provide strategic direction and guidance towards a redesign of the overall educational experience for students. It is our hope that this collective vision reinvigorates and re-engages students, educators, and community stakeholders. Providing feedback for Portrait of a Graduate is important for parents of all learners since this is a K-12 visioning process.

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts to help us in this visioning process and please know you are all welcome to our public Portrait of a Graduate meeting this February 13 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Roosevelt Auditorium at 34 North Hillside Avenue, Succasunna, NJ 07876. Morris County limits plastic recyclables because of Chinese decision
China's decision not to accept plastics for recycling has reached home.  The Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MCMUA) announced on Jan. 16 an important 2019 change in its plastic container recycling rules for the single stream curbside recycling program. Starting this month, only plastic containers (bottles and non-bottles) coded 1, 2, and 5 are acceptable in residential curbside recycling.
Morris County's Recycling Coordinator Liz Sweedy said residents should look for the recycling symbol on the bottom of the plastic container.

Effected Municipalities
The MCMUA's guidelines apply to 20 municipalities which have MUA curbside pickup, including: Boonton, Boonton Township, Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, Chester Borough, Denville, East Hanover, Florham Park, Hanover, Mine Hill, Morris Plains, Netcong, Pequannock, Rockaway Borough, Wharton, and the recycling depots in Harding, Mount Arlington, Randolph, Rockaway Township, and Washington Township.  Residents in the 19 towns which do not employ the MCMUA for single-stream pickups, should check their municipal website for recycling guidelines. RHS mini-THON Donor Drive Now Open - Mar 15

Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. While putting on a musical version of Shakespeare's play, exes Fred Graham (Will Chase) and Lilli Vanessi (Kelli O'Hara) can't decide if they're enraged, enamored or enormously confused whenever they cross paths out of character.

Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.

This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin  also showcases an incomparable design team with exquisite sets, costumes, and lighting by multiple Tony Award winners Bob Crowley, Gregg Barnes, and Natasha Katz.

Roxbury Rallies to Help Family Impacted by House Fire
Concerned people from Roxbury and beyond are joining to help a Succasunna family  ousted from their home Sunday by a fire.  The 39 Ridge Road home of Phil and Sheilla Bandari sustained significant damage. The blaze, deemed to be accidental by Roxbury Fire Inspector Mike Pellek, forced the couple and their two young children to escape and leave all their belongings.

Shortly afterward, an  online GoFundMe site was launched by Liza Kali on behalf of the Bandaris. The initial goal of raising $1,000 was quickly surpassed; by mid-day Monday, the site had raised almost $6,000.

That wasn't the only source of donations for the family, described by Roxbury Social Services Director Janet Wald as being "in shock."  The Roxbury Police Benevolent Association (PBA) donated $1,000 to the family, said Roxbury Police Spokeswoman Jennifer Dillard, and the Roxbury Rotary Club donated several hundred dollars, according to Wald.  She urged people to donate by using going to the  Friends of Roxbury Social Services website.  Unlike GoFundMe, the Friends site does not take any fee from donated money, Wald noted. Roxbury Plans to Pump Up the Paving
Roxbury aims to spend about $1.6 million on township road paving in 2019, about $700,000 more than it did last year, according to officials.  The proposed extra spending would be possible without increasing municipal taxes because the township "paid off a significant amount of general fund bond debt," in 2018, said Roxbury Township Manager John Shepherd.  The loss of that debt service payment leaves the township with an extra $1.1 million to spend on capital and operational expenses, he said. All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.  The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers.
