Superintendent's Message - Vaping, a Rising Concern in Schools
In case you missed it, Superintendent Loretta Radulic posted a letter to the parents of Roxbury at www.roxbury.org regarding a growing concern in middle and high school students.

In her letter, she writes, "Roxbury Public Schools are committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for your children. Our District Goals promote and provide for the security and protection of each individual student through various means, including anti-bullying assemblies, student and staff trainings on security protocols, and structural enhancements to our buildings and classrooms. The success levels of these outward measures are ultimately driven by the teamwork between our school community and our family community. To that end, we are calling upon your help today as we continue working toward keeping your children and our students safe. A rising concern among High School and Middle School Administration is the current trend of vaping." Hopatcong Block Party Open to Sponsors and Vendors
Winter's chill may be keeping people huddled inside their homes for now, but there's no freeze on plans for a celebration designed to help thousands of Lake Hopatcong area neighbors warm back up in the spring.

The Fifth Annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party, at Hopatcong State Park in Landing, is scheduled for May 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosted by the Lake Hopatcong Foundation (LHF), the event gives scores of businesses and organizations an opportunity to showcase their work, attracting thousands of visitors to the popular lakeside venue.  Guests will also be entertained with live music, boat and mini-train rides, on-the-water demonstrations, a children's area and, of course, numerous food and beverage options. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

LHF Organizes Special Celebration for $500,000 Lake Hopatcong Fund
You are invited to a special celebration at the Windlass Restaurant to personally meet and thank Senator Tony Bucco and Assemblyman Anthony Bucco for helping us gain the $500,000 Lake Hopatcong annual fund.  Lake Hopatcong received great news this week when the "Lake Hopatcong Fund" bill was signed by the Governor. This legislation will dedicate $500,000 each year from boat licensing fees to the Lake Hopatcong Commission for the care of Lake Hopatcong.

As you can imagine, this victory for Lake Hopatcong came about because of the very hard work of our legislative delegation. The Lake Hopatcong Foundation would like to give everyone the opportunity to thank our legislators for giving our lake such a bright future.  On Sunday, January 28th (a week from Sunday and a week before the Super Bowl) we will host a thank you celebration at the Windlass Restaurant at 4:00 pm.  Click here to read more about this event from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

'Landmark' Roxbury Garden Center Closes; New Operators Possible
Dering's Garden Supply, a fixture of the Route 10 corridor in Succasunna, has shut down after more than six decades in business.  Dering's, a popular source for plants, flowers, Christmas Trees and many other necessities for those with green thumbs, announced the closure earlier this month.  "After 65 years of business we will be retiring and closing Dering's Garden Supply," said a post on the company's Facebook page. "It has been a pleasure serving the community. We are grateful to have had so many valued customers over the years. Thank you for your patronage."  Click here to read more about this staple of Roxbury what's next for the Dering's Garden Center location from Tap Into Roxbury.

Circle Bowl in Roxbury Plans to 'Keep it Fresh'
Although they only recently completed a $5 million upgrade, the owners of Circle Bowl and Entertainment in Ledgewood are planning new things for the establishment, including an expansion of its arcade room.  The announcement was made Wednesday to members of the Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce. The chamber members gathered at Circle Bowl for the group's monthly lunch meeting, having  recently awarded the business the chamber's annual beautification award .

"We have learned that, in order to keep the business running well, we need to keep it fresh," said Circle Bowl Events Manager Jody Snyder. "That's one of the things we learned." Snyder's grandfather, Andrew Dougherty, founded the business in 1959 as Circle Lanes. The recent upgrade took place in 2015. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Turf Field and Other Upgrades Coming for Roxbury's Horseshoe Lake Park
A $1.6 million plan to bring artificial turf and other improvements to Horseshoe Lake Park got the go-ahead Tuesday from Roxbury officials.  The plan calls for resurfacing, with artificial turf, Field 1 at the Succasunna recreation complex and replacing the adjacent softball fields with a new irrigated sod multipurpose field that will have a scoreboard and bleachers.  The Roxbury Mayor and Council gave the township recreation committee approval to look for a design consultant for the project. Officials said construction could begin as soon as this fall. Click here to read more about this upgrade from Tap Into Roxbury.

A Roxbury Sergeant's Snowstorm Good Deed
Roxbury Police Sgt. Steve Curtiss doesn't like to be in the spotlight. Allie Urban knows him and knows that.  But she figured he deserved a little public recognition for his good deed during a recent snowstorm. So, with a click of a Facebook button - and the typing of a few words - the Succasunna resident went ahead and gave the sergeant a social media shout-out, complete with a video showing Curtiss wielding a show shovel.

"Big thank you to Steve Curtiss this morning for helping my sister and I️ shovel our cars out," she posted on Jan. 5 "We couldn't have got to school and work on this frosty morning without you. Good thing you happened to be passing by!" Click here to read more about this shout out from Tap Into Roxbury.
