Physics & Tech participate in Trans-Options Hydrogen Fuel Cell Challenge
For the third year in a row, the Physics & Tech classes from Roxbury High School participated in the Trans-Options Hydrogen Fuel Cell Challenge at New Providence High School. Under the guidance of Mr. Michael Gottfried and Mr. Ryan Gibson, students from their classes designed and built cars to race in the challenge.

The challenge requires students to design, build and race alternative energy model cars. In the process of designing their car, students learn about fuel cell technology. They also are required to submit a documentation portfolio, which presents the team's concepts, designs, and comments.

The benefits of the challenge for students include an introduction to STEAM career fields in engaging ways, learning collaborative problem-solving and career-relevant skills. For our teachers, they experience making science and engineering interesting for students, increase student engagement in the STEAM field, and have a life-changing impact by coaching and supporting a STEAM team. Additionally, everyone learns more about the environmental and sustainability impact as we explore using alternative sources of energy.

Ms. Denise Glenn, Grades 6-12 Science Supervisor shared, "Our students did an outstanding job placing 5th overall in speed out of 35 teams this year. This is the best RHS has ever placed. We are extremely proud of all of our teams and even received compliments from Trans-Options on our sportsmanship and willingness to assist other schools. Another great day to be a Gael, our P & T classes did an outstanding job this year! Portrait of a Graduate #AtTheRox - Next Session: Feb 13
Here in Roxbury, we are all connected by a shared aspiration: that all of our children have an educational experience preparing them to be effective lifelong learners and contributors. More than ever, our children's educational experience must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but it must also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st century skills our young people need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.

Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate is a community led process that allows all stakeholders (parents, community stakeholders, educators, and most importantly, students) help provide strategic direction and guidance towards a redesign of the overall educational experience for students. It is our hope that this collective vision reinvigorates and re-engages students, educators, and community stakeholders. Providing feedback for Portrait of a Graduate is important for parents of all learners since this is a K-12 visioning process.

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts to help us in this visioning process and please know you are all welcome to our public Portrait of a Graduate meeting this February 13 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Roosevelt Auditorium at 34 North Hillside Avenue, Succasunna, NJ 07876. Broadway Shows Bus Trip to NYC
Choose from two great shows!
Kiss Me, Kate or Disney's Aladdin on Saturday, March 2nd.

Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. Once again, Roundabout catapults you to a musical comedy heaven, with a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate. In Cole Porter's sparkling 1948 musical, the warring lovers of The Taming of Shrew are causing trouble both onstage and off. While putting on a musical version of Shakespeare's play, exes Fred Graham (Will Chase) and Lilli Vanessi (Kelli O'Hara) can't decide if they're enraged, enamored or enormously confused whenever they cross paths out of character.

Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.

This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin  also showcases an incomparable design team with exquisite sets, costumes, and lighting by multiple Tony Award winners Bob Crowley, Gregg Barnes, and Natasha Katz.

Roxbury Scouts Clean-up Ledgewood Pond
Ledgewood Pond might not be as pretty as Horseshoe Lake, but it doesn't have to be strewn with garbage.  With that in mind, four Roxbury Boy Scouts recently spent some time setting things right.

The four Scouts, Jack Demetris, Caleb Smith, Austin Christian and Van Krause, performed a clean-up of Ledgewood Pond on Dec. 29. The boys are members of Boy Scout Troop 163 out of Succasunna.  The Scouts left, for Roxbury Department of Public Works to grab, some of the bigger items they found such as a tire and a sled. They removed recyclables and other items, including a television and stand. Click here to read this story from Tap Into Roxbury.

DeFillippo Named Mayor of Roxbury
Robert DeFillippo was chosen by his colleagues on the Roxbury Township Council to be mayor for 2019, taking the reins from Councilman Mark Crowley.  The election of DeFillippo, an at-large Republican who retired in 2014 from his job as Prudential Financial Chief Communications Officer, took place at the town government's annual reorganization meeting. Councilman Fred Hall was picked to serve as deputy mayor.

Roxbury operates under a Faulkner Act form of government in which mayors are chosen by members of the elected township council, not picked by voters on Election Day. The mayoral post is mostly ceremonial; presiding over meetings, speaking on behalf of the township at events and presenting awards and proclamations. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
