Hockey Game Yields $26K for Roxbury Boy Fighting Cancer
About $26,000 was raised at the Dec. 23 "Face Off for Matt" charity ice hockey event, money that is being donated to help 10-year-old Matt Adonis of Roxbury in his battle against a brain tumor, said Krista Davis, one of the event organizers.
Davis, whose son plays hockey with Adonis, said about 500 people attended the game, which took place at Aspen Ice in Randolph. She said the idea for the charity game came to parents of the young hockey players shortly after Adonis was diagnosed in September.
About 50 young hockey players got to participate in the game. Each had raised $100 for a spot on the roster, Davis said.
Additionally, money was raised through donations, a tricky tray, a silent auction and a post-game open skate period. Click here to read more about this event from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury Board of Education Wrap-Up from January 2nd
The Roxbury Township Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting the day after New Year's on Tuesday, January 2nd in the Lincoln/Roosevelt Auditorium.
Joe Bocchino IV, Heather Champagne, and Anne Colucci were sworn in as new board members for three-year terms at the beginning of this meeting.
Business Administrator Patricia Wilson conducted the election for a new Board President. Board member, Ron Lucas nominated Leo Coakley. No other nominations were received. Coakley was re-elected as Board President for another year. Coakley then conducted the election for a new Board Vice-President to replace Patricia Miller who went off the board in December. Rich Alexander nominated Margaret Casola, who was absent from the meeting. No other nominations were received and she was approved.
Newly re-elected board president, Coakley congratulated and welcomed the newest members of the Board. He went on to share that January was School Board Recognition Month by the New Jersey School Boards Association. He explained that "the NJSBA notes that school board members, who receive no remuneration for their services, act as advocates for public school students as they work with administrators, teachers, and parents for the betterment of public education."
He added their roles are to "help determine the educational goals for our children and strive to provide the resources necessary to meet the needs of all students, including those with special needs. We also help to set policies for our schools and make important decisions affecting curriculum, financing, and staffing. It is important for the public to understand that the local board does not run the district but rather strives to see that the district is well run."
When Coakley was named board president last year he invited the entire Roxbury community to join him, the Superintendent, and the Board in deeming 2017 the "Year of Respect". He renewed that invitation for all for 2018, adding, "We also add an invitation to place an emphasis on working together."
"There certainly will be challenges in the year to come, but with mutual respect, by working together as partners in the Roxbury school community we can continue to improve how we go about preparing the children of today for tomorrow."

Gas Company Gives $50K to Help Launch Roxbury Affordable Housing Project
Money being donated by New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) will help Morris Habitat for Humanity (MHfH) break ground on an affordable housing complex it plans to build in Succasunna, it was announced today.
The
project, being built on the former Roxbury Department of Public Works site on Main Street, will have 12 townhouse units that MHfH will sell to qualified, first-time homebuyers. Groundbreaking is expected to happen in the spring with opening of the first batch of units projected for 2019. The $50,000 will also help the organization with other "neighborhood revitalization" projects in Dover and Mine Hill, including home repair and aging-in-place efforts.

Roxbury Marina Floats Big Plan for Site in Landing
A plan by Lake's End Marina in Landing to expand its business on property across the road from its current site is about to be debated by Roxbury Township officials.
The proposal, on the Roxbury Zoning Board's Jan. 8 meeting agenda, includes merging several lots on the west side of Mount Arlington Boulevard and using the property for the sale, display, repair and storage of boats.
Lake's End Marina owner David Gedicke, of Sparta, wants to convert -into a boat showroom and 2-bay boat service center - a building on the site that formerly housed a dry-cleaning business. He also wants to renovate a second building, the site of the former Lakeland Deli, to turn its upstairs apartments into office space.

Foot in the Door, Not Much More, for Roxbury's Sole Democrat
Roxbury's Republican-controlled township council reorganized the local government Tuesday and angered its sole Democrat by naming him to only a handful of extracurricular activities
At issue was the appointment of council members to various township advisory committees, liaison posts and other panels. These appointments don't bring any extra money to council members, but they do offer input, influence and a measure of smalltown status.
The appointments list, hammered out before the reorganization meeting, found Mayor Mark Crowley in 11 of these positions. Roxbury Councilman Bob DeFillippo's name also appeared next to 11 of the panels, boards, committees and posts.
But Roxbury Councilman Dan Kline, the only person on the 7-member panel who isn't a member of the GOP, found himself on only three. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury Fire Chiefs Take Oaths, Mayor Thanks Community
 A
discussion about the fairness of committee appointments was a somewhat controversial part of this week's reorganization of Roxbury government, but it wasn't all that took place at the Jan. 2 meeting. Oaths were taken, professionals were appointed and Roxbury Mayor Mark Crowley expressed thanks.
As firefighters in dress uniforms lined the back wall of town hall, Roxbury Township Clerk Amy Rhead accepted oaths of office from Kirk Keyes, Sam Manganella, Kyle Hoffman and Robert Hackett. Keyes was sworn in as chief of the full department while Manganella was named first assistant chief, Hoffman named second assistant chief and Hackett named third assistant chief.
