Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament - June 15
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Gaels Going Green - In The News...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving a half of dozen different policies outlining its position and efforts.
To that end, the district is continuously working toward becoming a Sustainable Jersey for Schools certified district and to have each of our seven schools become certified as well. As of August 2018, all seven Roxbury Schools earned Bronze certification within the program and is now striving to attain Silver certification.
Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time. Launched in fall 2014, they are a non-profit organization that provides tools, training, and financial incentives to support and reward schools as they pursue sustainability programs.

Eisenhower Middle School Awarded Sustainability Grant
Another school in Roxbury Township recently was awarded a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey for Schools capacity-building grant funded by the PSEG Foundation. Eisenhower Middle School is the latest to receive SJFS grant funding. Five of Roxbury's seven schools each received a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey for Schools/NJEA grant along with a $10,000 district grant back in February.
This SJFS/PSEG grant is one of four $10,000 grants and thirty $2,000 grants distributed to support on-the-ground, sustainability and capacity building projects in schools and districts across New Jersey.
Principal Paul Gallagher and his staff submitted the grant proposal entitled "EMS Zen Room", to purchase various seating options, yoga mats, and storage solutions to promote mindfulness at the middle school level.
In submitting the proposal, Gallagher explained healthy and toxic stress and how healthy stress is a part of life and needed for growth and development. "Solid scientific evidence suggests that mindfulness interventions improve attention, self-control, emotional resilience, and memory and immune response. In creating a Zen Zone, some of the benefits relevant to educators include attention, emotional regulation, adaptability, compassion, calming, and resilience. Our Zen Zone will create a space where the school and community can practice mindfulness and reduce stress."

Floating Classroom Offering Summer Learning Cruises
The school year may be wrapping up for many students, but learning isn't taking a break for the summer on Lake Hopatcong.
The Lake Hopatcong Foundation (LHF) will be running 90-minute summer cruises on its Floating Classroom, an interactive education center with scientific equipment on board to facilitate a hands-on learning experience fun for children and adults alike.
"We at the Lake Hopatcong Foundation are passionate about fostering a vibrant and healthy Lake Hopatcong and its surrounding community," said LHF president Jessica Murphy. "One our most important initiatives is educating people about the importance of our freshwater resources and how to take care of them. And what could be better than learning right on the lake itself?"
Thanks to the generous support of FirstEnergy Foundation and Investors Foundation, new digital microscopes from local Succasunna Company Zarbeco, along with tablets to view the images, have been added to the Floating Classroom, making it easier for passengers to view plankton samples during the cruise
"The Lake Hopatcong Foundation is delighted to receive grants from FirstEnergy Foundation and Investors Foundation," said LHF Grant and Program Director Donna Macalle-Holly. "With this new technology, passengers will be amazed at how clearly they can see the diversity of the plankton in the lake, which is critical to the stability of the ecosystem."
The public is invited to take a ride, conduct experiments and learn about the Lake Hopatcong watershed every Monday from July 8 to August 26 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Cruises will depart from the docks at Nolan's Point, 37 Nolan's Point Park Road, Lake Hopatcong. Activities will be geared toward guests who are at least ten years old, but younger guests are welcome to come aboard and join the cruise.
Advance tickets are recommended. However, walk-on guests are welcome as space permits. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Alumni In the News
Among the Elite: Roxbury Grad is Tops at Tuba
Roxbury High School graduate TJ Graf recently won the coveted Principal Tuba position with The Florida Orchestra, a feat that places the 21-year-old Succasunna resident among a very small cadre of musicians nationwide.
Graf, who graduated in 2016, just finished his junior junior year at University of Miami on a full ride scholarship. He won the Principal Tuba position last week, after auditioning for the position, and he will begin playing with the orchestra in September.
There are only about 35 major orchestra Principal Tuba players in the country.

Roxbury Alumni Directory Project with PCI
If you're one of our 17,000 alumni, you may be receiving a postcard, email, or phone call from Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI). We're working with PCI to produce an updated alumni directory. If you graduated before 2014, PCI (formally Harris Connect) is the same company that did our last two bound directories. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and friends, and it helps the school keep track of where everyone has gone!
We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.
Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.

A Push for Purple on Main Street in Succasunna - Sept 22
Homes and businesses along Main Street in Succasunna are being urged to decorate their properties with splashes of purple this month to raise awareness about Alzheimer's Disease and brain health.
The "Paint Main Street Purple" drive is being spearheaded locally by the Roxbury Women's Club as part of its role as a committee member of the Alzheimer's Association of Greater New Jersey (AAGNJ), said club member Phyllis Chanda.
"The Roxbury Mayor and Council granted permission for us to 'paint Main Street purple," Chanda said. "Basically, we're asking people to decorate their houses and businesses with purple to show support."
The decorations can include installing purple ribbons around trees and lamp posts or "anything you can," Chanda said. The effort will include a special event June 18 where people will make their own ice cream sundaes at 109 Main Street, the headquarters of Home Instead Senior Care and
Edward Jones Financial Advisor Bill Clinton
.
Roxbury will also be the site of the Northwest N.J. Walk to End Alzheimers. That event will take place Sept. 22 at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna. One of the goals of the Paint Main Street Purple idea, and the ice cream sundae event, is to get people to sign-up for the September walk, Chanda said.
