The Roxbury Board of Education also recognized the high school golf and baseball team for their accomplishments this year. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".
For Roxbury High's top two, educational opportunities in K-12 district have been phenomenal
The word "bittersweet" is defined as "pleasure accompanied by suffering or regret."
It's a fairly safe bet to say that's how the Class of 2019's top two are feeling right now.
Carrie Luan is the valedictorian, while Robbie Rust is the salutatorian. Luan's grade point average is 4.8791 while Rust's is 4.5143.
Asked to offer advice to their younger peers, both had a similar answer: get involved early.
"Start freshmen year, or sooner if you can," Luan said. "Get to know new friends as soon as you can. Get involved. Join sports and clubs."
Rust agreed.
Asked to assess their overall time in the district, both spoke very positively of their years in the Roxbury schools.
"I have found it really enriching," Luan said. "And that's due to the AP and club opportunities. I did the Model Congress one year. It was fun, but it wasn't something I wanted to continue. But, I figured out what I liked and what I didn't, and that shaped my future plans."
Rust cited the constant new offering of classes at the high school.
"There are a lot of new classes being brought in. Criminology is a new class. There' s a video game design class," he said.
Miller pointed out that there's a tiny house design class coming as well.
"There's a lot of opportunity for a bunch of different backgrounds. There's something for everyone," Rust added.

Horseshoe Lake Snack Stand Upgrades
In celebration of getting a new turf field at our Horse Shoe Lake Recreation area. The upcoming 2019 Roxbury Jr. Gaels Varsity Football Team is looking to also give back to the community! What better way than to spruce up our Snack Stand facility. The snack stand is a crucial structure to our program and brings in the majority of our funds to help support our program, so with it being our last year we wanted to do something for the program. This is to show our gratitude for all the long hours and hard work our parents put in to help our program succeed.
We are looking for monetary donations to help us paint and decorate the inside of the facility as well as purchase any items that will make it more successful. In addition, we would like to be able to upgrade the PA system to support the new field and have it installed, so services and equipment donations would be appreciated to help our goals be achieved!
Thank you all for your support! Click here to help support this update by visiting the GoFundMe page.

Gaels Going Green - In The News...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving a half of dozen different policies outlining its position and efforts.
To that end, the district is continuously working toward becoming a Sustainable Jersey for Schools certified district and to have each of our seven schools become certified as well. As of August 2018, all seven Roxbury Schools earned Bronze certification within the program and is now striving to attain Silver certification.
Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time. Launched in fall 2014, they are a non-profit organization that provides tools, training, and financial incentives to support and reward schools as they pursue sustainability programs.

LRS Collects Markers for ColorCycle
In one short month, students at Lincoln/Roosevelt School collected over 500 used markers to be sent to the Crayola company to have the parts reused.
Crayola offers an innovative program called ColorCycle that converts old markers into energy as well as wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles. The process repurposes the entire marker regardless of the different kinds of plastics or how they are assembled. The company will even pay for shipping the markers.
Patricia MacEwen's Math Class at the school shared, "This was a free easy way to help the environment. Lincoln/Roosevelt will continue this worthwhile project next year. So keep saving your used markers!" Click here to read about this collection on our website under "In the News".

Rod Run in Roxbury Raises Money for Cancer Patient
Hundreds of antique cars and trucks lined up on Horseshoe Lake's "island" Sunday for the annual Father's Day Rod Run. Even though the morning was overcast, spirits flew high among the roughly 1,500 spectators - especially those of the children perched on top of their parents' shoulders.
Yet the event, hosted by North Jersey Street Rod Association (NJSRA), was not just for the benefit of car enthusiasts. All proceeds went to Kristen Tester, a 13-year-old self-proclaimed car enthusiast from Mount Olive who is battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
The money raised from an entry fee, auction and 50/50 raffle all went to Tester and her family. In past years, the show raised over $10,000 for recipients, all of whom are part of the Valerie Fund Center for children with cancer.
The event also included vehicle inspection, pin striping, valve cover races for children and a food drive for the Roxbury Food Pantry.

The next Open House for the entire Drakesville Historic complex is July 14 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunshine Predicted for Roxbury Town-Wide Yard Sale - June 22-23
Sunshine (remember that?) is forecast for this weekend, a prediction welcomed by those planning to participate in the annual Roxbury Town-Wide Garage Sale.
The event is a fundraiser for the Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce. Last year's version, the sixth, saw more than 150 individual garage sales throughout the township "attracting hundreds of visitors ... for a great weekend of shopping," noted the Chamber.
The sales will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Roxbury Mayor and Council waived the usually required yard sale permits and fees for the weekend; "in an effort to help the Chamber attract as many shoppers and encourage as many garage sales within the township as possible," noted the Chamber. A Push for Purple on Main Street in Succasunna - Sept 22
Homes and businesses along Main Street in Succasunna are being urged to decorate their properties with splashes of purple this month to raise awareness about Alzheimer's Disease and brain health.
The "Paint Main Street Purple" drive is being spearheaded locally by the Roxbury Women's Club as part of its role as a committee member of the Alzheimer's Association of Greater New Jersey (AAGNJ), said club member Phyllis Chanda.
"The Roxbury Mayor and Council granted permission for us to 'paint Main Street purple," Chanda said. "Basically, we're asking people to decorate their houses and businesses with purple to show support."
The decorations can include installing purple ribbons around trees and lamp posts or "anything you can," Chanda said. The effort will include a special event June 18 where people will make their own ice cream sundaes at 109 Main Street, the headquarters of Home Instead Senior Care and
Edward Jones Financial Advisor Bill Clinton
.
Roxbury will also be the site of the Northwest N.J. Walk to End Alzheimers. That event will take place Sept. 22 at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna. One of the goals of the Paint Main Street Purple idea, and the ice cream sundae event, is to get people to sign-up for the September walk, Chanda said.

Roxbury Officials Urge Everybody to Create 'Smart 911' Profile
All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.
The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
