 |
The Roxbury Township Board of Education kicked off a celebration of achievements of four different groups of students and staff at its meeting on Monday, June 3rd.
Dozens of Roxbury High School and Eisenhower Middle School students were recognized for their 2019 performing arts achievements. Roxbury's Performing Arts Lead Teacher Patrick Hachey directed the RHS Classic Sounds Honors students with a brief performance prior to their recognition.
Also recognized by Roxbury High School Principal Dominick Miller were this year's Valedictorian Carrie Luan and Salutatorian Robert Rust.
In addition to recognizing our performing arts achievements and academic scholars, Roxbury's Director of Athletics Stu Mason recognized the girls high school lacrosse team for being conference champions this year.
The last presentation of the evening was to recognize and honor this year's Educators of the Year. Those individuals included:
- Lauren Mason, a first-grade teacher at Franklin School;
- Theresa Trimmer, a Special Education teacher at Jefferson School;
- Tina Leister, a fourth-grade teacher at Kennedy School;
- Alyssa Bellardino, a third-grade teacher at Nixon School;
- Cindy Perez, the Principal's secretary from Lincoln/Roosevelt School;

Jefferson School Community Supports Dad Stationed in Jordan
 Even though Jefferson School preschoolers, Bennett and Nathan's dad, James Rueter is 5,837 miles away stationed in Jordan he remains a member of the school community.
Preschool Teacher Patti Klein explained, "It all started when the preschool wanted to find a way to assist James Rueter. The class decided to donate things like peanut butter, soup, band-aids, cookies, and many other items the soldiers missed. The support from the class was so overwhelming the Army shipped items to the Unit for free!"
Adding, "Once Principal Melissa Cosgrove found out about this, the drive became a school-wide event and donations poured in from all the students!"
Jefferson Elementary is such a caring community. Corporal Rueter's wife stated, "I am amazed by the generosity and support from the school community and so thankful and appreciative for all the donations from the Jefferson students and families."

Jefferson Receives Grant from Siemens to Implement LEGO® Ed Sets
 Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township was recently selected to receive a grant from Siemens to purchase LEGO® Education sets to be used in the school's Makerspace along with professional training on how to use them. Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament - June 15
 This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury alum Dylan Castanheira now Atlanta United II goalkeeper
 Dylan Castanheira has rarely taken the conventional path to soccer success.
He skipped the Major League Soccer Combine, instead
signing a contract with Atlanta United FC 2
of the USL Championship shortly before the top league held its annual draft.
Yet like many of Castanheira's other choices, this worked out. The 6-foot-2 goalkeeper has made five appearances for the USL club, which hosts New York Red Bulls II on Friday night.
After missing his freshman season at Roxbury High School due to a twice-broken leg, Castanheira was able to train with Stoke City in England for a week in the summer and was invited to return for a more formal tryout a couple of months later. He chose to stay home, playing parts of five games as a Roxbury sophomore, backing up starter Steven Graziani. Graziani moved on to play at Monmouth, and Castanheira helped the Gaels go 14-8 with seven shutouts.
Castanheira gave up his senior year at Roxbury to join the under-18 team at Bristol City - a third-division team in England - on a two-year youth scholarship in July 2012. After a season, those players became "like my family," and Castanheira was less happy as a part of the U-21 squad. "A little homesick" on the U-21 team, he chose to return to Landing and concentrate on finding a college soccer team instead.
No schools were able to offer Castanheira a scholarship by the time he returned to New Jersey, coaches instead saying he could walk on and earn playing time. He chose Columbia, where he went 33-10-4 over four years. A three-time all-Ivy selection, Castanheira led the NCAA in goals against average (0.29) and save percentage (0.903) in his sophomore season. He broke the Ivy League record for career goals-against average (0.513), and set the school record with 25 career shutouts.
Castanheira has stopped 74.1 percent of the shots he's faced for Atlanta, which has not won a match since April 13. A point-blank stop he made in his lone shutout on April 10 was voted the USL Championship Save of the Week.

Roxbury Alumni Directory Project with PCI
 If you're one of our 17,000 alumni, you may be receiving a postcard, email, or phone call from Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI). We're working with PCI to produce an updated alumni directory. If you graduated before 2014, PCI (formally Harris Connect) is the same company that did our last two bound directories. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and friends, and it helps the school keep track of where everyone has gone!
We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.
Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.
