Roxbury Teachers Up the Ante on Behalf of Pediatric Cancer Fundraiser
Living up to their promises, Roxbury High School teachers are suffering good-humored humiliation on behalf of raising money for pediatric cancer research.
As he pledged to do if the school's Mini-THON fundraising effort raised $25,000 by March 3rd, science teacher Mike Gottfried allowed his brown hair to be bleached and then dyed a bright red. Or pink. Or something in between.
And following through on his pledge, industrial arts/woodshop teacher Paul Wood allowed not only his head but also his beard to be shaved when the $25,000 goal was reached.
The mini-THON event takes place this Friday and other high school teachers are joining-in by offering "donor drive incentives" as means of getting people to donate.
For example, special education teacher Kellie Damelio got her hair dyed pink and Roxbury High School Principal Dominick Miller allowed himself to be duct taped to a wall.
If $45,000 is raised before 5 p.m. on Friday special education teacher Ryan Gibson will decorate his beard with glitter. Also, special education teacher Kaitlyn Oster and family consumer science teacher Casey Obratis will perform a duet on stage.
If $50,000 is raised before 5 p.m. on Friday, special education teacher Michael Baldino and business teacher Alan Smarz will shave their heads/beards and special education teacher Meg Fagan will refrain from speaking for an entire day.
If the fundraising reaches $55,0000, Assistant Principal Jon Deeb will spend a day in in-school suspension and special education teacher Helen Hollenbeck will get a tattoo symbolizing strength. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
New To You Prom Shop - Mar 20
New To You prom shop is a project taken up by Block 6 of Roxbury High School's Careers in Family and Consumer Sciences Class with Barbara Kroog. There, they hope to help offer a way for Roxbury students to remove the burden of purchasing prom dresses and re-purpose the money for other prom essentials such as makeup, hair styling, and accessories. This shop will be open on March 20th from 2:30-4:00 p.m.
In addition to more efficiently spending the budget set for prom, it should also be noted that the fashion and textile industry heavily influences the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions released into the environment. The New to You prom shop hopes to reduce these emissions and reduce waste by reusing dresses that are often purchased for a high price and only worn once.

Roxbury Skills Put To Work
Industrial Arts Teacher, Paul Wood at Roxbury High School recently assisted a member of the Roxbury Gaels Track & Field team in designing, budgeting and building an indoor shot put circle for the throwing events athletes.
Mr. Wood and student athlete and junior Zach Zoino were able to fill a need for these athletes who are normally unable to practice their throws in a competition regulation circle due to bad weather in the early Spring. Now these athletes are able to regularly practice regardless of weather conditions. Additionally, this saved the Track & Field program well over $1,000 it costs to buy something like this at retail value. Mr. Wood and Zach showed great passion, dedication and creativity with this project and the Track & Field program greatly appreciates it.
Digital Learning Day Celebrated at Jefferson and Kennedy Schools
Students at Jefferson and Kennedy Elementary Schools in Roxbury Township celebrated Digital Learning Day on February 28th.
To kick things off, technology teacher Karen Kovarik registered the schools for the event and encouraged teachers to try something new with technology on that day and in the following week. She explained to students that "Digital Learning Day is a day to celebrate the ways that technology helps us to learn."
Adding, "In Roxbury, we are fortunate to have a great variety of devices such as Chromebooks, iPads, desktop computers, VR goggles, and SMARTBoards. More important than the devices themselves, however, are the creative ways in which teachers plan lessons to utilize the technology."

Franklin First Graders Become Word Detectives
Students in Miss Parsons' first-grade class worked hard in recent weeks to become word detectives. Each day they received a mission from the Super-Secret Detective Agency (SSDA).
Each mission involved a strategy on how to solve challenging words in their reading books. After successfully completing all five missions, they had a special visitor, Detective Brain from the SSDA! He surprised the class and handed out their word detective badges!
Miss Parson's shared that "The class continues to work hard each day as official word detectives!" Click here to read about this learning on our website under "In the News".

The deadline for submitting an application is April 10, 2019.
According to Liz Sweedy, Morris County Clean Communities coordinator, "Keep Morris County Litter Free" is part of the "Slam Dunk the Junk" statewide initiative sponsored by the New Jersey Clean Communities Council, which focuses on conducting litter cleanups, enforcing anti-litter regulations and changing the attitudes of "litterbugs" through education.

Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Alumni In the News
Roxbury Grad Keeps Alive a Project that Brought Gift Bags to Kids Fighting Cancer
She's now in college, but Roxbury High School graduate Jessica Bartelloni got a lot of satisfaction from a high school school project that provided gifts to children fighting cancer.
So she's doing it again.
Bartelloni, now attending County College of Morris, is keeping alive Project Glow Gold and hoping to gather even more presents for hospitalized children than last year. "Last year, we got 4,287 items," Bartelloni said. "My goal is 5,000 this year. I'm trying to up my goal."
Her former partners opted out of the 2019 version of Project Glow Gold, so it's just Bartelloni, her sister, Victoria, and a Kim Hughes, a fellow CCM student, running the effort this time, she said.
Project Glow Gold collects small items that are sorted and placed in gift bags, baskets and care packages and given to children enduring chemotherapy treatments "to give these children something to look forward to and to brighten their days." Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury Alumni Directory Project with PCI
If you're one of our 17,000 alumni, you may be receiving a postcard, email, or phone call from Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI). We're working with PCI to produce an updated alumni directory. If you graduated before 2014, PCI (formally Harris Connect) is the same company that did our last two bound directories. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and friends, and it helps the school keep track of where everyone has gone!
We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.
Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.

Looking to get involved? The Roxbury Alumni Association is looking to expand its current board of directors. They are looking for energetic alumni interested in getting involved with the Association and to add new members to its board. Roxbury Ponders Ways to Help Social Services During Walmart Downtime
Roxbury officials and the Roxbury Rotary Club are hoping to avert a crisis at Roxbury Social Services that could take place when the Ledgewood Walmart is
razed - possibly later this year - to make way for a new Walmart Supercenter. The Walmart store has been vital for Social Services, especially during the holidays when Roxbury fire and first aid volunteers stand at the store and ask patrons to buy items to be donated to the less fortunate.
But during the period between the closing of the current store and the opening of the new one, those volunteers are "not going to have that opportunity to do that," said the councilman.
He said the
Friends of Roxbury Social Services
support group is concerned about the matter. "So what we're trying to do, as Friends of Social Services, is get ... the fire departments and the first-aid squads to go other places" during their toy and food drives.

Roxbury 7th Grade Travel Hoops Team Wins Championship
The Roxbury Seventh Grade boys travel basketball team recently won the Lakeland League Championship for the third year in a row.
The victory came March 10, when the team beat Jefferson 65-35. The win marked the third consecutive season the team went gone undefeated.
Historian Richard Cramond is Roxbury's Volunteer of the Year
As a young biochemist in the food industry, could Richard Cramond possibly have envisioned - when he settled in Ledgewood in 1964 with his wife Cynthia and their young children that his new neighborhood would inspire him to half a century of immersion in local history and volunteerism?
Probably not, but it did.
And on Feb. 27, Cramond was named Roxbury's "Volunteer of the Year." The award was bestowed at Roxbury's Fourth Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, an event that honors the volunteers who support the various boards essential to the management of the municipality.
Cramond received citations from the state Assembly and the township for service spanning 45 years on the township Historic Advisory Committee (HAC), a sub-committee of the township Planning Board, including 34 years as its chairperson. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Officials Urge Everybody to Create 'Smart 911' Profile
All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.
The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood. Roxbury Township's Main Street Committee invites you to help support their fundraising efforts to continue the beautification of Main St. in Succasunna. Memorial/honorary engraved bricks are still available for sale. The bricks are installed in the courtyard surrounding the Victorian Clock by the Gazebo at the Library.
