Roxbury's STEAM Expo Focused on Seeds of Sustainability
More than 150 students explored their curious nature of science, technology, engineering, art, and math while investigating sustainability in this year's STEAM Expo for grades PreK-6 on Saturday, March 9th at Eisenhower Middle School. Each school and grade were represented at the expo and showcased experiments that encompassed every branch of STEAM with many sustainable-themed projects.
This year's focus was on Seeds of Sustainability, where we asked our students to gear their projects on sustainable topics such as renewable energy, eco-friendly, gardens/composts, weather, health and wellness, recycling, food/waste, etc. whereby promoting the sustainability of our community and our planet while performing valuable research that contributes to a stronger, healthier relationship between humans and their environment.
This expo is one of two that are supported and funded through a $10,000 grant by Sustainable Jersey for Schools and the NJEA. The STEAM Expos: Seeds of Sustainability and Gearing Gaels to Go Green proposal submitted by Denise Glenn, Roxbury Supervisor of Science Grades 6-12 and Ann Rhodes, Roxbury Community School/Community Relations Coordinator was one of eleven submissions awarded a $10,000 grant in by SJFS and the NJEA in February.
As part of this grant, Roxbury Schools would be holding two expos. The first was this one on March 9th which gave students the opportunity to teach their peers, their parents, and the public about sustainability projects they had worked on. The science team, administration, staff, families, and the public were able to speak to our up and coming sustainability champions from each school. Students were excited to share their results with our Roxbury community.

EMS Band Holds Virtual Rehearsal with Composer
Thanks to the advances in technology, the Seventh Grade Band at Eisenhower Middle School was able to hold a virtual rehearsal with composer Dr. Scott Watson on Monday, March 11th using Google Hangouts Meet.
Instrumental Music Teacher and Band Director Shannon Perrone worked with Roxbury's Technology Integration Specialist Ruth Davis to arrange for this special rehearsal. Perrone shared that Davis was integral in coordinating the technology to make this happen.
"Awake the Iron" composer joined the class through Google Hangout Meet and worked with the students to maximize their musical performance. Students performed sections of the piece for Dr. Watson who provided constructive feedback about their musicality, articulations, and style.
The EMS Seventh Grade Band performed "Awake the Iron" by Dr. Scott Watson at the All-District Band Concert on March 13th and will perform it again at the EMS Spring Concert on May 15th. Click here to read more from our website under "In the News".
Two from EMS Move On in the 'You Be the Chemist Challenge'
For the first time, Eisenhower Middle School has two students moving on in the You Be the Chemist Challenge sponsored by the BASF Corporation.
Six students took part in the challenge on Saturday, March 2nd at the BASF headquarters in Florham Park, NJ. The Challenge is an individual competition that is held through a series of multi-level tests. The first test originates with a student taking a qualifier exam at their school. The qualifier is a short multiple choice test provided by BASF and the Chemical Education Foundation (CEF).
This is the second year in a row that EMS participated in You Be the Chemist Challenge. Every eighth grader is administered the qualifier during class.
We are extremely proud of this year's participants: Max Corsi, James Winters, Robbie Meno, Emilia Stumpo, Alex Maldonado, and Justin Gilroy. After three rounds of questions, a semi-final and final round, representing EMS for the first time at the state challenge will be Justin Gilroy and Alex Maldonado. Justin and Alex will be with six other Morris County students at the state competition at BASF on April 13th. Click here to read more about this challenge on our website under "In the News"

Roxbury's Vertical Instruction in Music Continues
The Roxbury Band Program continued its vertical instruction outreach to Lincoln/Roosevelt students during the months of February and March.
Students learned techniques from our resident specialists in these instruments to help improve learning and performance.
High brass (trumpet and french horn) players worked with Ryan Sweer, instrumental music teacher from Roxbury High School, while low brass players (baritone and tuba) enjoyed learning from RHS's instrumental music teacher and band director Jeff Conrad.
Lincoln/Roosevelt's instrumental music teachers Ray Henricksen and Kate Katz shared that they are looking forward to incorporating some new ideas into lessons and band classes as a result of these guest visits, and hope that all students look forward to working with Mr. Sweer and Mr. Conrad in future band participation at EMS and RHS. Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Injured Mt. Arlington 'Sgt. Jimmy' Returns to Borough as Students Line the Road
Mount Arlington Police Sgt. James Distasio, seriously injured in December when he was hit by a car, came home to the borough today and was given a warm welcome by several hundred school children.
Distasio, who had been undergoing treatment at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in Chester following treatment at Morristown Memorial Hospital, was driven in a Kessler van to his mother's home. The trip took him past the Mount Arlington School.
School staff and students immediately started making "Welcome Home," "Good Luck with Your Recovery" and other signs and prepared to head outside. About 250 third-grade to eighth-grade students - joined by teachers and staff - lined Oneida Avenue to await the police convoy, said Mangino.
Seven members of the Roxbury Police Department were there "to welcome him home," said department spokeswoman Jennifer Dillard.
Mount Arlington Police Chief Keith Licata expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the students.
"We would like to thank everyone who came out today to make Jimmy's trip home extra special," he said in an email. "It was truly touching to see all of the supporters and all the kids lined up at the school to cheer on Sergeant DiStasio. The community support has been, and continues to be, amazing!"
