New Roxbury School Budget to Bring Slight Tax Increase
The owner of an average house in Roxbury will pay about $88 more per year in taxes to fund the new school budget, it was revealed on Monday.
The tax calculation was provided by Roxbury Schools Superintendent Loretta Radulic during a public presentation of the 2019/2020 district budget. The Roxbury school board later unanimously approved the $76.4 million spending plan.
The budget will require $5,822 in taxes from the owner of a home assessed at $208,343, a figure representing a 2.794 percent school tax rate. Last year's school tax rate was 2.752 percent, according to Radulic. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury. Roxbury's Instrument Test Drive is Music to Our Ears
The Roxbury Instrumental Music Department held a Roxbury Instrument Test Drive for all fourth-grade students on May 2nd. This event was designed to be an "open house" where students and their families could come and test out possible instruments to be played next year.
Prior to the test drive, there was an instrument demo day at all of the four elementary schools in Roxbury. Fourth graders saw an assembly performance by Roxbury High School musicians who introduced them all to the band and orchestra instruments available for them to play in fifth grade.
More than a hundred fourth grade students and their families turned out for the follow up Instrument Test Drive. Students who attended had the opportunity to actually play all the instruments and receive coaching from high school students and music teachers.
The Lincoln Roosevelt Instrumental Music staff shared, "We enjoyed meeting so many students and are looking forward to working with them in band and orchestra at Lincoln/Roosevelt next year."
Adding, "Within the next few weeks, students will receive an invitation to participate and will receive a digital link to sign up for band or orchestra. We ask that if there any questions about the LRS Instrumental Music program, that you reach out to us directly at
rhenricksen@roxbury.org (Mr. Henricksen),
kkatz@roxbury.org (Mrs. Katz), or
jgoodwin@roxbury.org(Mr. Goodwin)."

LRS Instrumental Music Teacher Ray Henricksen shared, "This year LRS is extremely proud to have such a large showing at this wonderful event as they represented Roxbury at the highest level!"
LRS Instrumental Music Teachers, Henricksen and Kate Katz shared, "We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication put on by these young musicians! Congratulations to all!"

Portrait of a Graduate: Voting Continues Until May 16th
Throughout the school year, we have been working as a community to formalize our beliefs on the ways in which we fulfill our vision of "preparing the children of today for tomorrow" with a special focus on our Gael graduates. After multiple meetings where we garnered the input of community members, Board of Education members, administration, teachers, and students, we narrowed the focus to six themes that we collectively believe frame the skills and attributes necessary for life beyond our schools and capture the essence of our Portrait of a Graduate. These include: Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Active Citizens, Curious Thinkers, Adaptable & Resilient, and Life Ready. Please check out the QR code below for more information about our Portrait of a Graduate and a view of the designs.
The designs were on display at the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony last Thursday evening at Roxbury High School, at the mini-golf event at the Roxbury Public Library on Saturday, at the Board of Education meeting Monday, and Roxbury Town Hall on Tuesday, before coming to adorn the lobby at Roxbury High School.
The school and public community now have an opportunity to participate in a survey to vote on the design that best captures the essence of a Portrait of a Graduate. Voting is now open and will conclude on May 16th. Vote now at
www.roxbury.org.
The winning design will represent Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate and will be revealed at the May 20th Board of Education Meeting.

Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament - June 15
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Alumni In the News
Roxbury Alumni Directory Project with PCI
If you're one of our 17,000 alumni, you may be receiving a postcard, email, or phone call from Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI). We're working with PCI to produce an updated alumni directory. If you graduated before 2014, PCI (formally Harris Connect) is the same company that did our last two bound directories. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and friends, and it helps the school keep track of where everyone has gone!
We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.
Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.

Bizzari Honored with 'Street Blade' on 70th Anniversary as Roxbury Firefighter
Roxbury's longest-serving firefighter, Lou Bizzari of Ledgewood, was bestowed May 4th with the township's highest honor: A special sign on the road where he lives with his wife, Rose.
The ceremony for Bizzari, 91, came on the 70th anniversary of his joining the Roxbury Fire Department as a 21-year-old from Port Morris. "I can't believe this," he said, standing in front of the Mt. Arlington Road house he had built in 1957. "This is really an honor. I didn't expect this."
The proposal to put up a street blade for Bizzari was made last year by Roxbury Councilwoman Jaki Albrecht The council endorsed the plan. Dozens of officials, firefighters and family members attended the event.

Roxbury Officials Urge Everybody to Create 'Smart 911' Profile
All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.
The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
