"Kreating Kindness" at Kennedy
Roxbury's Kennedy School PTA embarked on a painting project over spring break led by Kennedy mom and Montville teacher, Danielle Vytell-Mitschele. The two groups brought students together to work to update the artwork in the school and "kreate kindness" by painting inspirational quotes on wooden boards. The painted boards will then be placed in strategic locations around the school to encourage and motivate the students to be kind to themselves and others.

On Tuesday, April 23rd, the middle school students and staff took a field trip to Kennedy Elementary School to paint together with the Kennedy kids from all grades from PreK to fourth, who had volunteered to come in during their week off to spend an hour painting.

Kennedy's PTA President Gina Recchia said "I was so impressed with how well the Lazar students instructed and gently guided the Kennedy kids while making them feel like painting all-stars. Friendships were made and some beautiful artwork created to brighten Kennedy School." Click here to read more about this collaboration on our website under "In the News".

Kennedy Students Participate in National Screen-Free Week
Roxbury's Kennedy Elementary School PTA helped the PreK-4 students celebrate National Screen-Free Week from  April 29th through May 3rd by providing fun family activities each night at the school to encourage the Kennedy Cougars to turn off their tablets and turn on life!

Local businesses came out to take part in the activities. Each night of the week featured a different activity including Tae Kwon Do, dance lessons, building crafts, gymnastics, and even an ice cream social to end the week with Kennedy School teachers scooping for the kids.  Kennedy PTA President Gina Recchia shared, "The week brought many smiles and lots of laughter and no electronics were needed!" Nixon Students Participate in NJ Coalition for Inclusive Education's 10th Annual Poster Contest
The New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education hosted their 10th Annual Inclusion Works Poster Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association. The theme of this year's annual poster contest was "Inclusion Works! Inclusion Matters!"

Second graders at Nixon Elementary School submitted a poster to the New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education.  Aron Gutwein in Jennifer Molnar's class and Kaylee Salamanca, Trace Bourgeois, and Sam Martin from Kurtis Start's class worked together every Tuesday during recess for six weeks to complete the poster for the contest.

This contest teaches students the importance of inclusion because when all students are included everyone shines! Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".

RHS Hosts Illustrator Mike Moran in Anticipation of a New Course
Roxbury High School will be adding a new art course to its program of studies this fall. This new course, Comic Design Production, kicked off earlier this month when the Roxbury High School's Visual Arts Department hosted long-time Illustrator, Mike Moran as its latest artist-in-residence.

Moran is an illustrator and character designer whose humor illustration has been used by really fun clients throughout the years like American Express, Simon & Schuster, Highlights, Scholastic Inc., Major League Baseball, WWE, Ranger Rick, The Grammys, among many others. He has worked as a professional illustrator in New Jersey for the past 30 years; with his works being in major magazines, newspapers, animation, children's books, toy packaging, and more.

Roxbury's Visual Arts Lead Teacher Renee Zengel shared, "We thought having a professional illustrator come in to work with them would be a great way to introduce students to the new course option."

Adding, "I reached out to Barbara Ruether from The Morris Arts Council to find the perfect fit for us and that is exactly what we got with Mike Moran. He seamlessly entered the classrooms, made connections with the students, and had fun too! The students created their own small comics that told a fun, whimsical story."

In the new Comic Design Production class, students will be guided through every step of the process; learning character creation and development, storytelling and sequence, backgrounds and environments, layout design, and print production. Alongside this, students will become accomplished in Adobe Creative Cloud programs and Wacom Digital Drawing Tablets to keep them on par with industry standards. Roxbury's Jenny Motzer to Study Music This Summer at BUTI
Roxbury High School senior Jennifer Motzer, a clarinetist, will study at  Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) this summer with its Young Artists Wind Ensemble.

Motzer plans to  attend Boston University in the fall as a performance music major at the College of the Fine Arts. She said she is grateful to her family and all of the teachers who helped her to make it to this point and is excited for the future.  BUTI is recognized as one of the nation's premiere summer training programs for aspiring young musicians and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world's great symphony orchestras: The Boston Symphony Orchestra.  The class of 2019 was selected through a rigorous application and audition process.

Over the course of the program, the musicians will participate in robust concert and recital programming throughout the Berkshires, including performances at non-traditional venues. These performances offer the young musicians a chance to bring music to audiences who might not experience it regularly, while also building their audience engagement skills. Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament - June 15
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?  The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.  Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.

The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.  RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

The basic mission is to reduce litter in public places, promote the volunteer cleanup of public lands and to sustain a reduction in litter through education.  Roxbury Clean Communities has a simple and fun way to be a part of the community. Roxbury Alumni Directory Project with PCI
If you're one of our 17,000 alumni, you may be receiving a postcard, email, or phone call from Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI). We're working with PCI to produce an updated alumni directory. If you graduated before 2014, PCI (formally Harris Connect) is the same company that did our last two bound directories. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and friends, and it helps the school keep track of where everyone has gone!

We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.

Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.

Sun Finally Comes to Lake Hopatcong Block Party
Something unusual happened Saturday at Hopatcong State Park: The sky was clear for the annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party.  Repeatedly dampened by rain over the years, the annual party got a break this time around as Mother Nature bestowed a beautiful day. People responded by showing up in big numbers to stroll the event, meet vendors and chat with friends.

Lake Hopatcong Foundation Chairman Marty Kane  said this year's event attracted more vendors than ever.  Over 200 vendors are here and they run the course from everything from crafts to food to community organizations to every type of business in the area.

Also in attendance were political leaders from the four municipalities to which the Block Party is heavily dedicated: Jefferson, Mount Arlington, Roxbury and Hopatcong. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Color Run, Vet Fest to Make Roxbury a Haven Sunday for Fun With a Cause - May 19
For those who enjoy outdoors activities that help the less fortunate, Roxbury's Horseshoe Lake Park will become an all-day mecca on Sunday.  The fresh-air altruism will begin at 9 a.m. with the annual Color Fun Run and will continue into the evening with the inaugural Vet Fest NJ concert for homeless veterans.

The  Color Fun Run, organized by the Roxbury High School Interact Club (the Roxbury Rotary Club's offshoot in the high school) will raise money for Roxbury firefighter and business owner Jeffery Poissant and for the family of Nicole Coleman, a local woman who died recently from brain cancer.  The Color Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. and could last until 1 p.m. Before it ends, activity will begin across the park (at the Horseshoe Lake Fairgrounds) for  Vet Fest NJ , an event being promoted by Roxbury resident Richard Goldberg to raise money for  Community Hope's "Hope for Veterans " program.

Vet Fest NJ will feature 10 food trucks, six rock music tribute bands and bounce houses for children, Goldberg said. It will kick-off with a noon ribbon-cutting ceremony and is expected to run until 6:45 p.m.

In addition to being a talent promoter, Goldberg works as a consultant to companies that work for the military. He said his overseas travels to military bases gave him the idea for a concert to help homeless veterans.
