Roxbury schools look to the business community to augment students' real world experience
Part of the grades K-12 school district's "Portrait of a Graduate" initiative at the high school is to give graduating students some real-life, hands-on practical experience.  And that's where the Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce and the business community as a whole can take part in the process.  When the chamber met for lunch on Wednesday at Outback in Ledgewood, Superintendent of Schools Loretta Radulic was joined by Michael Mitchell, the district's director of instructional innovation and planning as the guest speakers.

Both discussed innovative instructional programming in the school district, focusing mostly at the high school.  "We have really begun some great initiatives this year," Radulic began. "That includes our Portrait of a Graduate. We are working to really figure out what skills do we want our graduates to have when they leave the high school. And we have had heated conversations about what we want in our graduates," she said.

"We came up with several themes, and we had our graphic design students design an image of what it should like," she said, referring to the logo that will accompany the "Portrait of a Graduate" initiative.  Part of the initiative, she said, is producing students with emotional intelligence.  We aren't just looking at math and science, but at the emotional learning as well," she said.  She also said the focus is on all students, whether they plan to attend college or go right into other types of careers.  Click here to read more from the Roxbury Register.

Kennedy BMX Bike Assembly Talks Bike Safety and Anti-Bullying
Kennedy Elementary School PTA capped off teacher appreciation week on May 10th with a BMX Bike Assembly for the K-4 students.  Alex Leibroch and Cory Berglar, riders from The Dialed Action Sports Team came by the school to show off some moves and talk bike safety and anti-bullying with the students.

"The PTA selected this event for their powerful lessons with a fun lineup of BMX bike stunts to engage and entertain the students and staff," said Kennedy PTA President Gina Recchia.

The riders emphasized the importance of fastening the clasp under the chin on the helmet and how bad it could be to not wear one. In addition to the importance of wearing helmets and safety gear, the Dialed Action Sports Team also covered concussions and how they can affect you and safety on the roads (like obeying laws, traffic signs, etc.).

Another part of their assembly tackled a bigger issue, how to stop bullying. The Dialed Action Sports team believes that a key to combating the bullying epidemic is education. They shared with the students and staff their three R's: Recognize, Refuse, and React. Click here to read more about this assembly from our website under "In the News".

Franklin Brownie Troop Participates in Project Kind
Brownie Girl Scout Troop 96603 that meets at Franklin Elementary School in Roxbury Township made up of 15 girls and 4 leaders got together on May 6th to take part in a Project Kind event.  These eight and nine-year-old girls in their second year of Brownies made 100 peanut and jelly sandwiches and bagged them along with some other treats as part of Project Kind, a non-profit organization that helps serve the community.

Brownie co-leader, Lori Romano shared,  "We wanted to do a community service project and Kristine had suggested this. We used some money that we earned selling Girl Scout cookies and also Wharton ShopRite made a generous donation, so much so we made the 100 sandwiches, which each bag included a sandwich, water, package of tissues, napkins, sandwich crackers, and a bag of chips."  In addition to the sandwiches, the girls attached inspirational quotes on each of the bags before delivering them to Project Kind to be handed out to the homeless in Newark, NJ. Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament - June 15
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?  The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.  Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.

The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.  RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Alumni Directory Project with PCI
If you're one of our 17,000 alumni, you may be receiving a postcard, email, or phone call from Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI). We're working with PCI to produce an updated alumni directory. If you graduated before 2014, PCI (formally Harris Connect) is the same company that did our last two bound directories. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and friends, and it helps the school keep track of where everyone has gone!

We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.

Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.
