EMS Annual Student Unity Tour Raises Funds for Roxbury Police
Seventh and eighth graders from Eisenhower Middle School participated in its third annual EMS Student Unity Tour Wednesday afternoon under clear blue sunny skies and warm weather at Horseshoe Lake Park.
Over 100 middle schoolers and some staff rode their bikes and cheered on their classmates to raise money for the National Police Unity Tour.
Eighth graders led off the event behind Roxbury Police Officer Silvio Valdes. Valdes was tasked in leading the way by Chief Marc Palanchi. Palanchi shared with the students that Valdes would be retiring in February and this might be his last tour. Student riders and staff rode two laps (3.5 miles) around Horseshoe Lake Park to honor Police Officers that had fallen in the line of duty. EMS students were fortunate enough to ride alongside many of the local police officers that participated in the National Unity Tour a few weeks ago to Washington, D.C.

Clouds Part, Colors Fly at Annual Roxbury Color Fun Run
On an drizzly Sunday morning at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna, rain clouds parted just in time for this year's Color Fun Run.
The event, hosted by the Roxbury Rotary/Interact Club, was conducted in support of Matt Adonis, a fourth grader at Nixon Elementary School who is battling a brain tumor.
This year's Color Fun Run boasted 569 participants who helped raise $14,627 to be given directly to Matt Adonis and his family. Matt's mother, Alyssa Adonis, said the funds raised Sunday will be used to pay outstanding medical bills, to take a trip with Matt and to benefit the pediatric cancer community through Matt's charity called Cheers for Matthew.
The event itself was primarily a paint-run around Horseshoe Lake Park. Children, adults and even pets crossed the finish line having turned their event shirts from white to rainbow colors by passing outposts where they were bombarded with the harmless, colorful powder. Floating 'classroom' helps students learn about Lake Hopatcong
Students in Morris County were able to get a firsthand look at New Jersey's largest lake thanks to a floating "classroom."
Fourth-grade students at the Nixon and Kennedy schools in Roxbury were on the maiden voyage of a new boat that turns Lake Hopatcong into a giant, open-air lesson. The boat is owned and operated by the Lake Hopatcong Foundation.
The students get to measure the water clarity, PH and temperatures and also look at lake organisms in microscopes.
The best thing we can do for Lake Hopatcong is teach these kids about it and how to take care of it," says foundation president Jessica Murphy. "To see it actually happening on the water, in the floating classroom, has just been so rewarding and exciting and this is just the beginning."
The group also was able to see the lake's resident bald eagle sitting on its nest. Click here to watch a video from News12.com. Click here to read more from the NJ Herald.
