Roxbury Unveils Its Portrait of a Graduate
Throughout the school year, Roxbury Township Public Schools has been working as a community to formalize its beliefs on the ways in which they fulfill their vision of "preparing the children of today for tomorrow" with a special focus on its Gael graduates.
After multiple meetings where the administration garnered the input of community members, Board of Education members, administrators, teachers, and students, they narrowed the focus to six themes that collectively frame the skills and attributes necessary for life beyond Roxbury schools and capture the essence of their Portrait of a Graduate. These include Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Active Citizens, Curious Thinkers, Adaptable & Resilient, and Life Ready.
These themes were given to Roxbury High School Graphic Design students in Scott Schilling's class with the responsibility to create a visual representation of the Portrait of a Graduate.
Students, staff, parents, and community members voted over the past month for the design that would best represent our Portrait of a Graduate.
With more than 800 votes cast, the Roxbury Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools, Loretta Radulic unveiled Melissa Murphy and Olivia Denis' winning design at the May 20th Board of Education meeting.

Roxbury Participates in Newton Strong
 Roxbury is Newton Strong!
Students and staff at Roxbury High School participated in "Newton Strong Day" on
May 23rd. The entire school
was asked to wear white to support the community of Newton.
Schools throughout Morris, Sussex, and Warren County participated in a white-out to remember Lexi Faye. Roxbury students also sported white ribbons to honor Lexi who died tragically in a car accident a few weeks ago.
To remember Lexi's legacy, a scholarship in her name was established and
Roxbury High School students and staff contributed over $150 to support Lexi's legacy.
RHS Junior Madison Maresca created a beautiful box to help support Lexi's legacy and scholarship.
EMS Thanks RHS Senior Michael Lang
Michael Lang is currently at Eisenhower Middle School doing his senior option with Mrs. Thomas' Grade 8 Algebra and had time to play football and be an Eagle Scout!
His final project is to leave a legacy at EMS and built, painted and donated blue/gold picnic tables for the EMS cafeteria courtyard.
EMS Assistant Principal Elizabeth Omegna shared, "The students and staff at EMS are most appreciative of his presence and dedication to the climate and culture of EMS.
We wish him luck after graduation and hopes he keeps in touch!" Thank you Michael!
EMS Places Top Three at Picatinny Solar Car Invitational
Thirty-one students from Eisenhower Middle School's STEAM Club recently competed at the Picatinny Solar Car Invitational on Thursday, May 16th. Forty-two teams overall competed from four different schools with 15 of those teams from Roxbury. EMS swept the top three spots with eighth graders Brody Schaub and Dom Barlett coming in first, seventh graders Yashil Trivedi and Rithik Mehta in second, and eighth graders Delaney Scalera and Alexa Scalfani in third.
EMS STEAM Club advisor and STEAM Teacher Phil Moskowitz shared, "All of our students worked really hard this year and it truly was anyone's race as we did not have any cars that were clear front runners. We swept the podium though placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd."
Adding, "This is the fifth straight year we have won this competition. The winners this year will travel to Washington, DC to compete in the Junior Solar Sprint National Championship which will be held as part of the TSA National Convention June 28th through July 2nd."

Roxbury 'Student Unity Tour' Led by Injured Mount Arlington Sergeant
A Roxbury school's annual bicycling tribute to police took a particularly poignant turn this year: It was led by Mount Arlington Police Sgt. James DiStasio, an officer nearly killed while on duty in December.
The presence of DiStasio today at the fourth annual Eisenhower Middle School (EMS) Student Unity Tour nearly brought to tears Roxbury Police Chief Marc Palanchi.
In introducing the popular sergeant to a crowd of over 100 EMS students, the chief choked up. He noted the sergeant came very close to being among the unfortunate police who died doing their jobs.
DiStasio suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a car while working a traffic incident on Dec. 11. He is still recovering from the incident,
having returned home from hospital and rehab treatment in March.
At the annual Student Unity Tour, police from Roxbury and elsewhere join students in a 2-lap bicycle ride around Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna.
The event is designed to recognize the annual Police Unity Tour in which law enforcement officers ride bicycles to Washington, D.C. in honor of fallen comrades. The officers gather at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Judiciary Square, where a semi-circular wall contains the names of the more than 21,000 killed officers. Sixth Year for Roxbury Teen's Anti-Cancer Baseball Tournament - June 15
This will be its sixth year, so can we now call the Landon Monro Stand Up To Cancer Baseball Tournament a Roxbury tradition?
The tournaments, started in 2014 by Succasunna teenager Landon Monro, have raised more than $24,000 for cancer research. So even if the annual event needs to run a few more years before attaining "tradition" status, it's still quite an accomplishment.
Monro, now 16 and a Roxbury High School junior, is hoping the 2019 installment is bigger and better than ever. It will take place at the Righter Road baseball fields on June 15.
The "fun, non-competitive" tournament is open to players of all ages (adults will play softball) and costs $26 per player. Monro is also seeking contributions from non-players in the form of donations and sponsorships.
RSVPs including the names of players, their ages and grade level, can be emailed to Dayna Monro at daynamonro@aol.com. Checks, payable to Stand Up to Cancer, can be sent to Dayna Monro, 12 Meredith Ct., Succasunna, NJ 07876. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Gaels Going Green
Jefferson, MT Arlington & Roxbury - Gain Clean Communities Grants
The state Department of Environmental Protection has awarded $21.5 million in annual Clean Communities grants statewide, including $1.24 million to Morris County and its 39 municipalities.
This is designed to help finance litter cleanups that improve the quality of life in New Jersey's communities as part of its Clean Communities Program.
The program is funded by a legislated user-fee on manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors that produce litter-generating products.
"In addition to being unsightly, litter can have detrimental impacts on water quality, wildlife and natural habitats," said DEP Commissioner Catherine McCabe. "Clean Communities grants fund cleanups, many along roadsides and around stormwater collection systems, that will protect water quality and natural resources, improving the quality of life in our communities."
The nonprofit New Jersey Clean Communities Council oversees the reporting requirements for the program. Disbursements are based on housing units and miles of municipally owned roadways.
Morris County government received a grant of $101,199. The county's 39 towns split $1,138,196 in grant dollars. Top recipients are Parsippany, $115,736; Mount Olive, $69,118; Randolph, $61,487; Jefferson, $58,446; Rockaway Township, $57,540; Roxbury, $55,826; Washington Township, $55,206; Montville, $52,269; and Morris Township, $55152. 'Oak Wilt' disease, emerald ash borer plague Roxbury trees
Between the "Oak Wilt" disease and the emerald ash borer, lots of trees are coming down in the township.
Oak wilt is a disease that affects oak trees. It is caused by Ceratocystis fagacearum, a fungus that develops in the xylem, the water carrying cells of trees.
The emerald ash borer, meanwhile, is a tiny, golden colored insect that is 100 percent fatal to ash trees.
The emerald ash borer hasn't been in the news lately but the nasty little bugs aren't going anywhere soon and they are always on the mind of people like Charles Savante.
Savante is the point man for Morris County Park Commission's ongoing strategy to slow down the ash borer.
And, according to Public Works Director Rick Blood, both are problems in Roxbury Township. Blood said at the Township Council meeting on Tuesday, May 21, that far, a dozen ash trees on township property have been taken down due to ash borer infestation. "We are definitely seeing trees in decline. If it doesn't sprout leaves, it's almost dead," Blood said. Click here to read more from the Roxbury Register.

We want to make it easier for you to connect with fellow Gaels, which is why we're compiling the Roxbury Alumni Directory. The extensive directory will be available in both hardcover and digital form for any alumni who wish to purchase it and will be a valuable tool for Gaels looking to reconnect with classmates or broaden their Gaels network.
Enjoy the memories and remember every day is a great day to be a Gael! Click here to find out more regarding our Roxbury Alumni Directory Project.

A Parade of Patriotism; Roxbury Honors Those Who Served
Roxbury's annual Memorial Day Parade commenced under clear skies Monday morning, an unusual boon for the event which has - in past years - been cancelled due to harsh weather.
Hosted by Roxbury Township and Kenvil VFW Post 2833, the parade began in the parking lot of the Lincoln/Roosevelt School, then proceeded to Main Street where there was a military salute at the Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The procession featured sport and antique cars, emergency response vehicles, bagpipe players, Scouts, sports teams, town officials and representatives of other groups.
The Roxbury High School Marching Gaels waved red, white and blue flags and played patriotic tunes as members of VFW Post 2388 members marched down Eyland Avenue in uniform. Marchers threw candy to hundreds of cheering onlookers.
The parade entered Horseshoe Lake and ended at the War Memorial on the "island" for a service. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury Appropriates Money to Fix Emmans Road
Almost a mile of potholed and patched Emmans Road in Ledgewood will be repaved soon, thanks to funding appropriated May 21 by the Roxbury Mayor and Council.
"This should draw cheers," said Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo in reading the capital ordinance that allocated $235,000 for the project. The total cost of the work will be about $260,000 with the state Department of Transportation funding $220,000 and the township's capital improvement fund covering the balance.
The plan calls for milling and repaving 4,775 feet of the road between Whisper Way and Sandra Court, said Roxbury Public Works Director Richard Blood. He noted that "the wooded stretch" of the road, about 2,400 feet long, "will be totally reconstructed to a depth of six inches." Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
Mayors to county: Fix pavilion at Lee's Marina in Mount Arlington
The mayors of both Roxbury Township and Mount Arlington are hoping Morris County comes to the rescue of a structure in the borough that has been labeled as one of the most endangered historic buildings in the county.
When the Roxbury Township Council met on Tuesday, May 21, Mount Arlington Mayor Michael Stanzilis was among the guest in the audience. He and Roxbury Mayor Robert DeFillippo discussed the fate of the pavilion, which has sat for decades at the county-owned "Lee's County Park Marina" on Howard Boulevard in Mount Arlington.
"The 10 Most Endangered Historic Places program spotlights irreplaceable historic, architectural, cultural, and archaeological resources in New Jersey that are in imminent danger of being lost," according to the organization.
"The act of listing these resources acknowledges their importance to the heritage of New Jersey and draws attention to the predicaments that endanger their survival and the survival of historic resources statewide. The list, generated from nominations by the public, aims to attract new perspectives and ideas to sites in desperate need of creative solutions." Click here to read more from the Roxbury Register.
Roxbury EMT Gives Money from Bracelet Sale to Fire Victims
 A family that was
forced out of its Succasunna home in January due to a house fire was presented recently with more than $400, most of it coming from a fundraiser spearheaded by Roxbury Emergency Medical Technician Ashley Wyble.
In fact, it was 19-year-old Wyble who brought the money personally to the Bendari family, now living in Mount Arlington. She came back with a message.
"The family wanted to say that they are so grateful and thankful for the community we live in," Wyble said. "They've been so overwhelmed with donations. They haven't been able to reach out to everybody, but they want to make it known they are so grateful for the love and support this town has given."
Several years ago, while she was still in Roxbury High School, Wyble created a charitable effort - called Project Ring - that sells hand-made bracelets. On March 8, the Ledgewood resident
hosted a Project Ring fundraiser on behalf of the Bendari family
.
She said she and her helpers sold about $400 worth of bracelets and collected some cash donations for the family. Click here to read this story from Tap Into Roxbury.

All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.
The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
