Roxbury Boy Scout Gives Picnic Tables to Middle School

LRS Celebrates Veteran's Day Through Education
Photographs, military gear, discharge papers, and other artifacts were on display for the students and staff at Lincoln/Roosevelt School this past Veteran's Day. This year the school experienced Veteran's Day by learning about its origins along with a Veteran's Day Museum.
Social Studies Teacher Melissa Davenport with the assistance of fellow Social Studies Teacher Eric Roy, enlisted the staff at Lincoln/Roosevelt School to bring in mementos from members of their families who have served over the years during war and peace. A handful of staff brought in these items to help share the history of just a few of our nation's veterans in honor of Veteran's Day.
The culmination of these items was used to create a Veteran's Day Museum for the fifth and sixth graders at LRS. Over the course of November 6th and 7th, the entire student population had a chance to visit the museum, learn about the different branches of the military, and hear some stories as they related to the memorabilia on display. You're never too young to celebrate our Nations veterans! The preschool program at Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township did just that!

Healthy Living Feeds the Brain at the Latest SAIL Parent Academy
Being mind-full or mindful was just one of the questions raised at the latest Student Academic Intervention and Learning (SAIL) Parent Academy on November 14th. This parent academy treated Franklin and Nixon School families to an evening of healthy living tips and activities. These families are afforded this opportunity through Title I funding which is based on the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch programs. These families are afforded this opportunity through Title I funding which is based on the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch programs.
By holding an academy on this topic, the district continues to work towards its district goal. Dr. Chuck Seipp, Assistant Superintendent explained that "Health and wellness have been a focus of our district for the past few years. Earlier this year the district hosted the first annual FitnessRox Fun Run in order to encourage a family event supporting a healthy lifestyle. We also include elements of healthy living into our PE instruction, providing teachers with mindfulness and yoga training, as well as our Tech-free days. Three Gaels Sign National Letters of Intent
Roxbury High School saw three seniors last week sign letters of intent on Wednesday to continue their athletic careers at institutions of higher learning. Surrounded by friends, family, and teammates Ben Palanchi signed to play men's lacrosse at Sacred Heart University, Will Findlay to play baseball at Fordham University, and Melissa Murphy to play women's lacrosse at Quinnipiac University.
Palanchi was there with his parents, Marc and Kristin and his brother Joey. His older sister Reghan (Class of '17) couldn't make it as she's currently away at Ben's soon to be alma mater, Sacred Heart.
Following Palanchi, Findlay committed to join the Rams at Fordham University with his parents, Sharon and William and brothers John and Cal by his side. Findlay has been with the Gaels the past three years and will play once again this spring.
Not to be outshone by the boys, Melissa Murphy too signed to continue her lacrosse career next year. Her parents Michelle and Brian, and her brother Michael were there to support her as she signed.
Murphy will be a Bobcat next year but still has one season to go as a Gael. Click here to read more about these players from our website under "In the News".
Gymnastics Update:
As a Great Year Ends, Roxbury Gymnastics Coach Looks Ahead
Tara Liska, coach of Roxbury High School's inaugural girls gymnastics team, said Sunday she "couldn't be more proud" of the team's performance and is looking forward to next season.
The team's final effort, a "States" battle, took place Nov. 10 at Montgomery Township High School. Roxbury's Tiffany Zieba wrapped up a "fantastic season" for the Gaels competing on vault, said Liska. She finished at 10
th
place in the state.
Roxbury had three gymnasts qualify for Sectionals. Tiffany Zieba places first on the Vault, 11th on Bars, 12th on Floor and 8th All Around. Alexis Merola places 14th on the Balance Beam and Morgan Valdes places 24th on the Vault and Balance Beam.
Liska noted that Roxbury had four gymnasts earn all-league titles. "Two earned first team all-league titles: Tiffany Zieba in the all-around and Alexis Merola on the balance beam," the coach said. "Morgan Valdes earned a second team title on the vault and Ashley Miller earned honorable mention."
The team ended with a 6-2 regular season record and placed second as a team at its League Championship meet, with multiple outstanding individual results. "We took three girls to Sectionals and one to States," Liska said. "I couldn't be more proud of the girls and how we all grew together as a team throughout the season. A big thank you to all the schools that hosted the competitions this season, the great coaches and to our parents for all of their support. This has been such a memorable year for Roxbury. Thank you to everyone who has helped us out along the way I look forward to the continued growth of this program." Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Broadway Shows Bus Trip to NYC
Choose from two great shows!
Kiss Me, Kate or Disney's Aladdin on Saturday, March 2nd.
Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. Once again, Roundabout catapults you to a musical comedy heaven, with a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate. In Cole Porter's sparkling 1948 musical, the warring lovers of The Taming of Shrew are causing trouble both onstage and off. While putting on a musical version of Shakespeare's play, exes Fred Graham (Will Chase) and Lilli Vanessi (Kelli O'Hara) can't decide if they're enraged, enamored or enormously confused whenever they cross paths out of character.
Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.
This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin

Community Bulletin Board and News
Roxbury Girl Scouts Collect Supplies for Military
Girls from Roxbury Girl Scout Troop 96118 recently collected three SUV's worth of supplies to be donated to United States military service personnel.
The Military Supplies Collection effort took place November 10 in front of the Ledgewood Walmart.
In addition to donated supplies, the Succasunna-based troop collected $340 in cash.
The girls sorted, boxed and shipped 24 large boxes of supplies to two stateside soldiers and one platoon stationed in Afghanistan. They also created cards with messages of gratitude that were included in each of the boxes.
The troop was pleasantly surprised by the generosity of the local community and will plan another collection in 2019. Click here to read this story from Tap Into Roxbury.
Lou Bizzari: Seven Decades of Service to Roxbury
A road in Ledgewood is being named in honor of Louis Bizzari, Jr., a man who became a member of the Roxbury Fire Department 70 years ago and continues to serve the township.
The Roxbury Mayor and Council voted Tuesday to erect on Mt. Arlington Road a "street honor blade" sign that will bear Bizzari's name. The town officials passed a resolution that also says the road "from this date forward shall bear the name 'Louis A. Bizzari Jr. Road.'"
The street blade will be installed sometime in May. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury Launches Online 'Recycling Coach'
The township today announced the roll-out of a "really great and useful tool" to help residents be good recyclers, said Roxbury Recycling Coordinator Kellie Ann Keyes.
By using the "Recycle Coach" platform - either as a smartphone app on their mobile devices or through a link on the township's website - residents can do the following, she said:
- Stay organized with custom curbside collection and events calendars
- Receive collection reminders and real-time updates on service disruptions
- Become recycling experts with a comprehensive "What Goes Where?" search tool, including local disposal information and collection requirements for common and uncommon items
- Take the "What Type of Recycler Are You?" quiz for useful recycling tips and tricks
- Use the problem-reporting tool, equipped with geo-location, to notify municipal customer services about issues like missed collections
Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury about this great new addition that helps us help save the planet!
Roxbury Officials Urge Everybody to Create 'Smart 911' Profile
All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.
The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood. A Big Renovation for the Roxbury Library Kids Room
The children's room at Roxbury Public Library is undergoing a big transformation this week, one that will open a lot of room for programs and activities, said the library director.

"They were doing some space reconfiguration and they had a whole lot of shelves they were basically giving away," she said. "I jumped on it and got it for us and its basically just about enough to redo the entire children's room." Click here to read about the Children's Room renovations from Tap Into Roxbury.
