Bury Blitz: Roxbury students bringing high tech to athletic fields
Peyton Napoliello admits "sports has already taken over my life." But that's not necessarily a bad thing. A power forward on the Roxbury basketball team and golfer, Napoliello is "watching sports 24-7, it feels like. There's nothing I love more than sports. I don't mind that taking over my life."
It's also become part of his curriculum. Napoliello and his teammate Will Findlay are two of the eight Gaels seniors taking Special Topics in Sports & News, an English class targeted toward content production about the high school's teams.
For Napoliello, it's another opportunity to get a taste of his dream job in sports broadcasting. He and Findlay, a senior catcher/third baseman who signed a National Letter of Intent with Fordham University's baseball team, launched the @BlitzBury Twitter feed in September. It's one of the class' three main projects, along with a biweekly TV show posted on YouTube, and a weekly podcast. Click here to read more from the Daily Record.
Jefferson Schools Celebrates its Paras
Staff at Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township held a very special breakfast on November 14th to celebrate its amazing paraprofessionals.
Amy Gallagher, the Director of Special Services attended the breakfast and remarked about the essential role paraprofessionals play in the success of students and their importance to the entire district.
Jefferson Principal Melissa Cosgrove added "The paras are the unsung heroes that make our school's work. As we move forward in this wonderful school year as a community, we should all take the time to recognize the true gift paras are to our schools." Hockey Update:
Roxbury Ice Hockey Starts Season with Win
The Roxbury High School ice hockey team started its season Saturday the right way: A shut-out victory.
Playing at Aspen Ice in Randolph, the Gaels trounced Paramus Catholic 4-0.
The Gaels play their next game Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. against West Morris Central at Mennen Arena.
Roxbury didn't fare as well in its annual charity game Friday against Mount Olive. In the game, which didn't have an impact on the team's NJSIAA record, the Gaels Roxbury lost to Mt. Olive, 4-1.
The game as the Inaugural Tannenholz Memorial Game, played in honor of Jason Tannehholtz, a coach and teacher at Eisenhower Middle School who died Sept. 29 from lung cancer.
Tannenholz's mother said the game was "a very touching way to honor Jason," adding that her son "would be so proud."
Tannholtz's two children were in at the game as were other family members and friends and a large crowd of Roxbury hockey fans. Click here to read the full coverage from Tap Into Roxbury. Click here to read more game coverage from NJ.com.

Kinnelon (6) at Roxbury (2) - Boys Ice Hockey - Nov 28
Tied at two early in the third period, Kinnelon used four unanswered goals to defeat Roxbury, 6-2, at Mennen Sports Arena in Morris Township.
One minute after Roxbury's Kevin Keane tied the game at two in the third period, Kinnelon took the lead on a goal from Everest Schneider. They added to that with goals from Evan Grainer, Connor Lapenna and Schneider's second of the game to secure the win.
Both teams scored early in the first period, with Kinnelon's Craig Smith and Roxbury's Nicholas Hefferle finding the net 30 second apart, as both teams skated the remainder of the period tied at one. Kinnelon broke the tie late in the second period, when Tim Hausler scored, giving the Colts a 2-1 lead.
Brett Lewis had 21 saves for Kinnelon, while Tyler Marston had 27 for Roxbury. Anthony Fanneli, Joseph Arnold, Jared Fatzer, Smith, Hausler and Schneider had assists for the Colts. Hefferle and Keane had assists for Roxbury.

Broadway Shows Bus Trip to NYC
Choose from two great shows!
Kiss Me, Kate or Disney's Aladdin on Saturday, March 2nd.
Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. Once again, Roundabout catapults you to a musical comedy heaven, with a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate. In Cole Porter's sparkling 1948 musical, the warring lovers of The Taming of Shrew are causing trouble both onstage and off. While putting on a musical version of Shakespeare's play, exes Fred Graham (Will Chase) and Lilli Vanessi (Kelli O'Hara) can't decide if they're enraged, enamored or enormously confused whenever they cross paths out of character.
Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.
This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin

Community Bulletin Board and News
Roxbury Cops Team with Claus
In addition to fighting crime, Roxbury police will also be battling Christmas Day disappointment this year, it was announced today.
To bolster the effort, the department has partnered with Santa Claus, said the department.
"The police department will be assisting Santa with delivery of gifts this year," the police said on their Facebook page. "We are asking the community to help us by dropping off new, unopened toys. These gifts will be given to families in town who may be struggling this holiday season and the rest will be given to Toys for Tots."
The police department said Roxbury officers will be at police headquarters on Route 46 in Ledgewood through Dec. 20 to accept the unopened gifts and it encouraged children to accompany parents in bringing the items to the police station. The officers on duty "will take the time to thank your child for giving such an important gift and we'll snap a picture to post on our page," the department added. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
'Kind Hearted' Roxbury Patrolman Buys Bikes for Pedaling Commuter
Struck by the determination of a man who rides a bicycle to work each day on Route 46 in all types of weather, a Roxbury policeman has so far purchased the fellow two replacement bikes.
The generosity of the officer, Roxbury Police Patrolman Silvio Valdes, was heralded today by the police department on social media. Noting Valdes is retiring soon after 25 years on the job, his colleagues praised him for having a "kind heart" and said he will be missed.
According to the department, the bicyclist is a Netcong resident who has been riding through Roxbury to jobs for about three years. Click here to read the full story from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury Mulls Plan to Zap Your Electric Bill
Roxbury residents' electric bills will decrease if the township enrolls in an "energy aggregation" program being considered by the township, said Roxbury Councilman Dan Kline.
Kline, one of three members of the council who studied the pros and cons of energy aggregation, gave a presentation on the program at Tuesday's council meeting. The council members appeared to like the idea but said they wanted to hear input from constituents before proceeding.
By joining an energy aggregation program, the township would "get access to a private energy market available through a private auction." That means it could attain reduced energy rates for Roxbury residents, Kline said. Click here to read more about this energy aggregation from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury Launches Online 'Recycling Coach'
The township today announced the roll-out of a "really great and useful tool" to help residents be good recyclers, said Roxbury Recycling Coordinator Kellie Ann Keyes.
By using the "Recycle Coach" platform - either as a smartphone app on their mobile devices or through a link on the township's website - residents can do the following, she said:
- Stay organized with custom curbside collection and events calendars
- Receive collection reminders and real-time updates on service disruptions
- Become recycling experts with a comprehensive "What Goes Where?" search tool, including local disposal information and collection requirements for common and uncommon items
- Take the "What Type of Recycler Are You?" quiz for useful recycling tips and tricks
- Use the problem-reporting tool, equipped with geo-location, to notify municipal customer services about issues like missed collections

Roxbury Officials Urge Everybody to Create 'Smart 911' Profile
All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.
The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
