Roxbury Schools Learn to 'Be a Survivor' with ALICE Training
Roxbury Township Public Schools recently adopted a new strategy for lockdown procedures known as the ALICE plan. ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate.
Loretta Radulic, Roxbury Schools Superintendent said, "The philosophy known as ALICE is to use technology and information in a way so that staff and students can make informed decisions in a crisis. ALICE is a proactive approach that increases the chances of survival in a crisis."
Prior to ALICE, the district followed the lockdown method which has been in place since 2000. This method alone is no longer acceptable per the New Jersey Department of Education.
Two presentations were held this week for staff and parents regarding the ALICE training.

Roxbury Football Follows Voelbel's Lead
Morris County football fanatics, meet Roxbury senior Tucker Voelbel.
He's one of three running backs in the Gaels' signature Wing-T offense.
He's one of only two returning varsity starters from last year's team - the other is lineman Jake Babus.
And he's the one player who means the world to the Roxbury football team.
Voelbel, a full-time starter on both sides of the ball since his sophomore year, does it all.
"The guys look to Tucker because he always conducts himself with class and humility," Roxbury head coach Cosmo Lorusso said. "They follow his lead. He isn't the kind of guy to give impassioned speeches, he simply leads by example. Tucker is willing to do whatever he needs to do for the betterment of the team, and he makes his teammates better, and that has helped us to a 3-1 start."

Roxbury Rotary's Annual Fruit & Pie Sale
Apple Pie. Pumpkin Pie. Key Lime Pie. Lemon Meringue Pie. Caramel Apple Walnut Pie. Pecan Pie. Peach Praline Pie. French Silk Pie.
Your diet doesn't stand a chance in Roxbury, a town with a Rotary Club that makes it so easy each year to rationalize buying the pies mentioned above. Money raised in the Annual Roxbury Rotary Fruit and Pie Sale goes to some really good causes, after all.
It's the organization's biggest fundraiser and it's very popular, not only with those who buy the pies and citrus fruit but also with Roxbury Social Services Department Director Janet Wald. Rotary donates some of the fundraiser's proceeds to Social Services and, each year, it orders extra fruit and pies that people can buy and give directly to the Roxbury Food Pantry, Alford said.
This year's Fruit and Pie Sale has a couple of new twists, said Alford. The fruit will come from California, not Florida, and there will be middle school and high school students selling fruit to help raise money for
Raising the Roof for Levi
, an effort to help the Spencer family of Succasunna make their house more accessible for their 4-year-old son Levi, born with spina bifida.
Alford's very excited about the involvement of Eisenhower Middle School students in this year's sale, something instigated by Eisenhower 8th-grader T.J. Mathis. With support from Eisenhower Middle School Principal Dominick Miller and teachers Marie Pessolano and Elizabeth Tucker, the school's Builder's Club (a middle school counterpart to the Kiwanis Club's high school arm called the Key Club) will work with Roxbury High School Interact Club members.
Pies and fruit can be pre-ordered online. For more information call Roxbury Rotary President Gary Ribe at 973-219-4367.

Hip Hop Dance After School
Hip Hop is an eclectic street style of dance that is performed in running shoes to current upbeat tempos. The dynamic moves taught in Hip Hop class are fast, stylish, funky and similar to those seen in music videos.
This class is appropriate for high energy dancers that are driven by a beat. Similar to a Jazz class, Hip Hop is broken down into 3 parts - warm up, corner work/technique and choreography. Students in a Hip Hop class will work on their strength, flexibility, and musicality through intricate fun and fast paced funky choreography.
Since the tempos are usually quicker than any other dance form, the choreography in a Hip Hop class provides a great cardio workout and is also a fun way to exercise the mind and memory.
(Children should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers to class)
