Roxbury Students Attend Dodge Poetry Festival
Roxbury High School AP Literature students along with their teachers, Laura Schmidt, Allyson Spargo, and Sharon Baker attended the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival on October 19th at NJPAC in Newark and the surrounding area.  While there, these seventeen students had the opportunity to meet, speak with, listen to, ask questions of, and hear discussions by and about various poets. The day they attended is specifically geared for high school students.

"The event is not only inspiring, but it also happens to fall right near the end of our poetry unit of study in the classroom. What better way to learn about poetry than from actual contemporary poets especially as many of the students on the trip write their own poetry," shared Schmidt.

In the coming AP Literature classes, students will debrief on the highlights of the festival for those students who could not attend as well as share information from the different groups who attended different sessions. "We will then be applying knowledge from the festival to the poetic technique we have been studying in class," said Schmidt. Members of the Roxbury High School Roxbotix Robotics Team participated in the Roxbury Adopt-A-Road program as part of the NJ Clean Communities initiative. This high school team spent time this week cleaning up Righter Road in Succasunna. The team does this twice a year and receives small mini-grants to help fund their program.

The Clean Communities program is a comprehensive litter abatement program serving New Jersey residents and visitors. The basic mission is to reduce litter in public places, promote the volunteer cleanup of public lands and to sustain a reduction in litter through education.

Roxbury Clean Communities has a simple and fun way to be a part of the community. Individuals, school groups, churches, and businesses donate time to continue to keep Roxbury beautiful.

RHS Performing Arts Presents The Crucible this Fall at RHS - Nov 1-2
Ticket reservations are now being accepted for Roxbury High School's fall drama of The Crucible showing Thursday and Friday, November 1-2 at 7:00 p.m. at Roxbury High School at 1 Bryant Drive in Succasunna.

StageAgent.com states, "In the insular, Puritan community of 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, a group of young girls are found dancing in the woods, and immediately fall ill. When no earthly cause can be determined, the citizens of Salem suspect that some more sinister force may be at hand. As long-held grudges turn to violent disputes, humiliating secrets are exposed and disseminated, and the line between truth and pretense becomes increasingly blurry, the citizens' dogged determination to root out evil becomes more dangerous than the evil itself. When the burden of proof is invisible and the crime too terrible to name, everyone becomes a suspect and no one is safe.  The Crucible , Arthur Miller's remarkable 1963 play, remains as relevant as ever, and carries with it a stern warning: in every community torn by suspicion, the most dangerous threat may be the community itself."

Join us for an enjoyable entertaining evening. Tickets are $10 each. Click here for the ticket reservation form . Ticket reservations will automatically be held at the Box Office and can be picked up 45 minutes before the performance.

Broadway Shows Bus Trip to NYC
Choose from two great shows!
Kiss Me, Kate or Disney's Aladdin on Saturday, March 2nd.

Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. Once again, Roundabout catapults you to a musical comedy heaven, with a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate. In Cole Porter's sparkling 1948 musical, the warring lovers of The Taming of Shrew are causing trouble both onstage and off. While putting on a musical version of Shakespeare's play, exes Fred Graham (Will Chase) and Lilli Vanessi (Kelli O'Hara) can't decide if they're enraged, enamored or enormously confused whenever they cross paths out of character.

Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.

This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin  also showcases an incomparable design team with exquisite sets, costumes, and lighting by multiple Tony Award winners Bob Crowley, Gregg Barnes, and Natasha Katz.

Donations Sought for Annual Roxbury Veteran Grave Wreath Laying
The goal is to have holiday wreaths placed on the Succasunna graves of 610 veterans in December. The challenge: Funding the endeavor.  Toward that end, Roxbury area members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) are asking people, organizations and businesses to help.  The Ferro Monte Chapter of NSDAR has put out a request for donations that will help it participate, for the fifth time, in the annual National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 15. Each wreath costs $15, said the group.  The wreaths will be placed on veteran graves at the combined Cemeteries of the First Presbyterian Church and the United Methodist Church on Main Street and at the Flanders-Hillside Cemetery. Work Begins on Habitat for Humanity Condos in Roxbury
Ground was broken Wednesday on a 12-home Habitat for Humanity project in Roxbury, an event that was six years in the making, according to the organization's CEO.  The project, at 119 and 121 Main Street in Succasunna, will have two buildings with each containing six condominium units. The first of the two buildings is expected to be ready for occupancy by this time next year and the second will be done a year later, said Morris Habitat for Humanity CEO Blair Schleicher Bravo.  With donations of money and labor, Habitat for Humanity provides homes to families with limited incomes. The homes are sold to families who win a lottery and pass a screening process. The chosen families must invest many hours of their own labor into building the structures and helping with other Habitat for Humanity efforts. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Officials Urge Everybody to Create 'Smart 911' Profile
All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.  The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood. Roxbury Firehouse Has High Hopes for Vendor Fair - Nov 3
Roxbury Fire Company 1 in Succasunna is hosting a vendor fair in November, something organizer Jennifer Markle hopes will be a successful fundraiser for the group of volunteer first-responders.  Markle, a Succasunna resident who has been a firefighter with Company 1 for almost 10 years, said the she and her colleagues would love to see at least 50 small businesses participate in the Nov. 3 event.  The fair will take place in the firehouse on Main Street, said Markle - who also serves as manager of the building's rental hall. It will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The firefighters are considering expanding the event to include food trucks and other attractions outside the firehouse - maybe even getting township permission to close Main Street for a bit, she said. Hundreds of Lake Hopatcong Cleanup Volunteers Needed - Nov 3
As the Lake Hopatcong community prepares for a 60-inch drawdown this fall - done by the state once every five years - the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is calling for volunteers to help remove debris from the exposed lake bed during a Lake Hopatcong Lake-Wide Cleanup to be held on Saturday, Nov. 3.

This year, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is working in partnership with the Lake Hopatcong Commission to again bring residents together to remove accumulated litter and help make the lake a healthier place.  To coordinate the removal of all the debris, the Foundation will work in partnership with the Morris and Sussex Counties' Clean Communities programs, as well as the Departments of Public Works in Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mt. Arlington, and Roxbury.  Bridgestone Tire will be recycling tires pulled from the lake.

The Foundation is trying to recruit 40-to-50 team leaders and hundreds of volunteers. Local groups and organizations are encouraged to assemble cleanup teams. Click here for more information from the Morris County Government website.

Growing Roxbury tradition: Roxbury's Home for the Holidays Street Festival
The fourth annual "Home For The Holidays" event is coming to Roxbury Township.

Of course, the event is held in December. This year, it is planned for Saturday, Dec. 1. December is, if nothing else, always unpredictable. Last year, the weather was fairly mild, and a good time was seemed to be had by all. But, it's a big risk. If the weather is two degrees, or if there's an ice, sleet or snow storm, this event could easily be a complete bust. We guess that's not really any different than its companion event, Olde Suckasunny Day, held each September. Click here to read more from the Roxbury Register.

Vendor/crafter registrations are still be accepted the Saturday, December 1st event.  Go to  www.roxburynj.us/holidays  to get registration form.

New this year: A contest for the most festive holiday-decorated/themed vendor booth. The winner gets a free booth at next year's event.  This family-friendly holiday street fair will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. along Main Street in Succasunna by the Roxbury Public Library and churches.  Stockton Carriage Tours will be back offering free carriage rides with jingle-belled horses - sponsored by the Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce and the Roxbury Rotary Club.
