Embrace Differences Autism Awareness
Embrace Differences Month
A committee has been set up to "Celebrate Differences" across the district in an effort to honor and bring awareness to the topic and promote equity. The committee, led by Alexis Somers and her colleagues, has set up activities for the next three weeks called "Embracing Uniqueness", which included the Embrace Unity T-shirt sale, unity display, week of clothing days (pajama day, etc...), and sensitivity activities and discussions in the classrooms.

For those of you who purchased an Embrace Diversity t-shirt, thank you! Thanks to everyone’s efforts Roxbury Schools was able to donate $766.50 to various charities that support inclusivity and uniqueness! Participants are asked to wear their shirts each Friday in April to show their support. Be on the lookout for more information and announcements from your child's school regarding Embracing Differences and clothing days.

Information, quotes, and activities will also be posted on the district's social media account beginning Monday to help us recognize and embrace our differences! Be sure to check it out!
Rox-THON 2021 is on!
Help Support the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer
Roxbury High School’s Rox-THON received the green light to hold an in-person THON event this year for Roxbury High School students only. The high school club was founded with the ideals of supporting families and donating funds for pediatric cancer and this year the determination to continue with the cause has been unwavering.

Over $300,000 has been raised in the past seven years with the majority of the efforts generated by student leadership.

Rox-THON will continue to give the majority of the raised funds to Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center, keeping money within the local community, and a portion to Four Diamonds which supports the larger community for families who are battling pediatric cancer.

“The impact this organization has had in both our community and in the lives of so many children has been the most inspiring and life-changing experience for me,” shared Ileana Gonzalez President of the organization. “As a senior, this very impact is the reason I believe it is so important to support Rox-THON and donate to our cause.”

“It’s the students who continue to push the envelope to see the funds grow from year to year,” said Michael Gottfried, advisor of the club. “The students are the ones pounding the pavement and making the calls to do something bigger than themselves.”

Rox-THON, formally mini-THON, is a branch of the better-known Penn State’s THON that raises money for pediatric cancer. Two years ago, the Roxbury club branched into its own organization in order to keep the majority of the raised funds locally.

“While this year may look different than the past, it’s the purpose of the event that stays the same,” said Margery Richman, co-advisor. “We’re excited to be able to hold a modified on-campus event since last year the event was held virtually.”

“Knowing that money is being raised to help families so that they don’t have to worry about any financial expenses while their child receives treatment, motivates us to help,” said Rachel Feliciano, vice president of the club. “Whether it’s medical bills or housing, the only thing families need to think about is their child. How great is that?”

The event is scheduled for Friday, May 21st at Roxbury High School. There will be two cohorts of participants: Freshmen and Sophomores will participate from 3:00-6:00 pm, and Juniors and Seniors from 7:00-10:00 pm. May 22 is the scheduled rain date.

The logistics for the event are being carefully planned with the administration, however, “attendees can still expect the energy and activities to remain consistent with the traditions that have been established including music, games, guest speakers, and dancing,” said Gottfried.

To support the cause, donate online or send a check (made payable to “RHS Rox-THON”) to Roxbury High School Attn: Mike Gottfried, 1 Bryant Dr. Succasunna, NJ 07876. Any inquiries can be directed to rhsroxthon@roxbury.org

Baseball preview, 2021: Group classifications as teams return to the diamond
After the 2020 high school baseball season was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak, players and coaches couldn’t wait to get back on the diamond. Well, after a long year, baseball is back. As part of the NJ Advance Media baseball staff’s 2021 preview, take a look here at the NJSIAA’s group classifications for the upcoming season from NJ.com. Opening Day is scheduled for Monday, April 19.

Morris/Sussex baseball players to watch ahead of the 2021 season
It's been nearly two years since baseball was last played in New Jersey after the 2020 spring season was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. The last time we saw any area players, they were freshman and sophomores competing for playing time on varsity rosters. Plenty of progress and development has been made during the layoff, and 2021 will be one of the most highly anticipated seasons in recent memory. With competition set to begin Monday, we take a look at some of the top Morris/Sussex players returning to the diamond. Click here to read about Justin Bosland (Roxbury Senior Shortstop) and Jack Findlay (Roxbury Senior Pitcher) from the Daily Record.

Baseball preview, 2021: Teams & players to watch this spring in the NJAC
With the 2020 season canceled due to COVID concerns, this spring will be one of the most anticipated in recent memory. It will be different than any other as teams look to compete while negotiating the pandemic, but players and coaches alike are eager for a return to the diamond. As part of the NJ.com baseball staff’s 2021 baseball preview package, here’s a look at the top teams and players to watch in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference from NJ.com.

Roxbury made the list - Roxbury: Roxbury has one of the top arms in the state in senior and Notre Dame signee Jack Findlay. The lefty has an arsenal of pitches, which includes a fastball in the 90s, a changeup, and a slider/curveball combination. Findlay has superb control, highlighted by the fact that he had a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio in 2019. Findlay might be the best pitcher in the NJAC and Roxbury has a chance to win every game when he takes the mound. Sophomore third baseman and pitcher Justin Ford should make an impact as well.

Softball classifications for the 2021 season: Who will be contending for titles again?
The 2021 NJSIAA softball season is almost upon us. And it is going to end, at least right now, with state group championships and possibly a Tournament of Champions. What are the groups this season that will end with sectional champions? Check out the list here of the NJISAA softball classifications according to NJ.com.

Morris/Sussex softball players to watch ahead of the 2021 season
When this year's varsity softball players left the diamond after the 2019 season, they may have been just breaking onto the scene or taking on a bigger role on their teams. Now, after a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they will be asked to take the reins and lead the way. Here are the softball players in Morris and Sussex counties who have already made their mark and will hope to continue their strong starts to their varsity careers across a full spring season in 2021. Roxbury's Cameron Fehsal (Roxbury Junior Infielder) is one to watch according to NJ Herald. Click here to read more.

Girls Volleyball: No. 14 Sparta stays mentally tough, downs No. 17 Roxbury - Apr 6
Sparta prides itself on mental and physical toughness. Given how much uncertainty there was surrounding Season 3, the team needed to be mentally tough before it even hit the court a month ago. Over the past week, the team showed its resiliency after an unexpected setback against Chatham and needed to do so once again with plenty on the line Tuesday against Roxbury. Not only was the top spot in the NJAC’s American Division at stake, but potentially the top seed in the North Jersey 1, Group 2 tournament. A slow start didn’t derail confidence one bit and Sparta, No. 14 in the NJ.com Top 20, relied on its toughness once again to outlast No. 17 Roxbury 22-25, 25-13, 25-18 in Succasunna. Click here to read more from NJ.com.

Roxbury, ranked 19th in NJ.com’s Top 20, bested Pope John 25-15 and 25-18 in Sparta. The Lions move to 8-2 in the win. Pope John drops to 2-5. Roxbury downed Pope John on March 22, 3-1. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.

As our minds continue to be filled with thoughts and uncertainties about the pandemic. Victoria Phelan Fonseca, a 4th-grade student at Kennedy School in Mrs. Leister's class, has bigger concerns about the lasting effects of pollution, especially plastics filling our landfills, environments, and oceans. Plastics are destroying our oceans and the habitats that millions of sea animals call home. Each week Victoria will be giving tips, tricks, and facts to all Roxbury families so we can help slow this effort and continue to raise awareness on this important crisis.

This week's tips, tricks, and facts is:

Richter to head Lake Hopatcong Foundation
The Lake Hopatcong Foundation (LHF) has hired Kyle Richter as its new executive director. He replaces founding Executive Director Jessica Murphy, who stepped down last fall. The LHF made its selection after an extensive regional search led by a team of board members, according to Board Chairman Marty Kane.

“We could not be more thrilled with Kyle joining the LHF as our new executive director,” said Kane. “I have had the occasion to work with him over the years at the Musconetcong Watershed Association and I have always been extremely impressed with his focus, drive, and intelligence.”

Richter brings a decade of experience in the field of environmental conservation. Immediately prior to joining the LHF, he served as the watershed programs manager for the Musconetcong Watershed Association for seven years, where he led its education and outreach programs, while managing restoration projects throughout the watershed.

The Lake Hopatcong Foundation is a registered 501©(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting the lake environment and enhancing the lake experience by bringing together public and private resources to encourage a culture of sustainability and stewardship on and around New Jersey’s largest lake, for this and future generations. Help us with a little Spring Cleaning
When debris—plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, etc.—is tossed on the ground, it can get washed into storm drains and end up in our waterways. In addition to being unsightly, litter can harm aquatic life and decrease oxygen levels in the water when it decays. If we each take some time to clean up our communities, we can make a BIG difference. If you're itching to get a little spring cleaning done, below are two cleanups that will get you outside in the spring weather and protect our watershed at the same time. Happy spring cleaning!

Musconetcong Watershed Association's Annual River Cleanup
Saturday, April 17, 2021 beginning at 9:00 am
Each spring, the Musconetcong Watershed Association organizes a river cleanup that draws hundreds of volunteers to remove trash at various locations along the Musconetcong River, from Lake Hopatcong to the Delaware River confluence. The Lake Hopatcong Foundation is pleased to assist this effort each year by coordinating the Hopatcong State Park portion of the cleanup. Hopatcong State Park is location #1 on the river cleanup map and you can join us for this cleanup by registering HEREGloves and trash bags will be provided. Masks will be required when in groups.

LHF Adopt-A-Spot Community Cleanup
Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 8:30 - 10 am
We hope you will join us to pick up roadside debris along Mt. Arlington Boulevard in support of Roxbury’s Adopt-A-Road Program and in celebration of Earth Week. In just a quick 90 minutes, we usually make a huge difference! No registration is necessary for this event, simply meet us on Mt. Arlington Boulevard in front of the Nixon School (275 Mt Arlington Blvd., Landing) at 8:30 am. Please park your vehicles along the road in front of the school. Gloves, trash bags, and vests will be provided. Masks will be required when in groups. Click here to read about these events from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.
School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.

Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.

We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.

Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

NJ Human Services Extends COVID-19 Child Care Assistance Programs Through End of School Year

The state will be extending several COVID-19-related child care assistance programs for families and providers through the end of June 2021. As part of the public health emergency, the state launched the New Jersey School-Age Tuition Assistance Program to help families pay for care for their school-age child in need of child care as a result of COVID-19 remote learning schools schedules.

For families who have been approved for School-Age Tuition Assistance, payments for your child’s care will now continue through June 30, 2021. No new applications are being accepted.

If you need help paying for child care, you can apply for the state’s Child Care Subsidy Program. To give you a sense of whether you would be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy Program, the income maximum for a family of four is $52,400 annually. Use our calculator to see if you are likely to be eligible or visit our parent page to learn more about this program. If you need help finding child care, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) Agency. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov.
