Superintendent Communications - Apr 21
Dear Roxbury Community:

If you’ve attended our Board of Education meetings or viewed FaceBook posts, this announcement is no surprise to you. It has been my intention from the beginning to be transparent. I’ve continued to monitor the health of the district, have frequent conversations with our local health officials and district nurses, collaborate with administration, take into consideration stakeholder’s various opinions and rationale, protect the health of our students and staff, and update REA and BOE leadership. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the goal from the beginning has been to return our students and staff to a typical school day. That goal will be realized on May 3rd so long as our health trends continue in the right direction.

Recent trends have illustrated a decrease of positive Covid-19 cases. Our local health officials report significantly decreased Covid-19 cases in Roxbury. Cases reported in our schools have also markedly dropped in number. Both the case rate and percent positivity rate as reported in the Covid-19 Activity level Index by the Department of Health have decreased. The availability of the vaccine continues to increase, and while I do not have a percentage of vaccinated staff, I know for certain that many individuals are vaccinated.

In addition, we have been successful this year in returning to 100% capacity for five days a week in every building. Moreover, we can ensure 6 feet social distancing in lunchrooms in all schools. We have prepared for outdoor seating at both the high school and middle school. We continue to provide enhanced cleaning and air purifiers where necessary, to wear masks, and to ensure the rSchoolToday app is enforced. In short, the precautions we have taken have supported the health of our students and staff.

Regarding our staff, I feel compelled to acknowledge them. I have never been prouder of their efforts, of their desire to provide solid instruction for our students, of their support for our students’ physical and social, emotional health, of their partnership with administration, families, and each other. It’s through the efforts and fearlessness of all staff members that we have been able to move forward with caution and determination.

Lastly, while many high schoolers are enjoying the benefits of a four-hour school day, it is important for us to return to the typical school day as we look towards the future and strive for a “normal” school year beginning in September. We are prepared for full days. We have mapped out our lunchrooms, ordered tents to provide outdoor dining at EMS and RHS, and have designed updated schedules and transportation.

Therefore, we will return to full days on Monday, May 3rd for the entire district. Parents who would like to change their child’s learning platform from virtual to in-person or vice versa should communicate their decision through the Genesis Parent Portal by noon, April 27th. ONLY if you are changing your child’s learning platform, should you complete the form available here.

To ensure that all graduating seniors can walk in graduation, all seniors will be virtual from Monday June 14th until Tuesday, June 22nd. Senior Prom will occur on Wednesday, June 23rd and Graduation will take place on Thursday, June 24th. The eighth grade Step Up Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 22nd at 6:00pm. Details for all end of the year ceremonies will be communicated to families by the building principals.

I invite you to attend the upcoming Board of Education meetings as we celebrate Roxbury Resilience in our school district. Celebrations and acknowledgements are scheduled to take place as follows:
  • April 26th Meeting: Buildings & Grounds, Food Service, Security, Transportation
  • May 10th Meeting: Nurses, Secretaries, Technology
  • June 7th Meeting: Coaches, Counselors, CSTs, Lunch aides, Paras, Teachers (and Retirees!) and Therapists
  • June 21st Meeting: Administrators, BOE, Parents/Community

The upcoming months will be filled with celebrations and acknowledgements because we’ve been in a battle filled with unknowns and uncertainty, and we’ve successfully navigated it because we’ve done it together. A battle of any kind leaves scars that require healing, but it also provides an opportunity to illustrate our character, our determination, and our support for each other.

Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation in the upcoming months as we continue our final months of the 2020-2021 school year. Please continue to keep up your vigilance, staying home when feeling unwell, washing hands, wearing masks, so that we can successfully complete this year. And, again, please join us as we move into our months of celebrations.

Yours in Education,

Loretta L. Radulic, Superintendent of Schools

Franklin PTA Holds Family Fun Healthy Hydration Event
Thanks to a $1,000 grant sponsored by Nestlé Waters North America, Franklin Elementary PTA in Roxbury Township was able to host a Healthy Hydration Family Fun Day last Saturday at Horseshoe Lake. This event was a fun, hands-on opportunity for families to learn about the importance of healthy living, healthy hydration, and choosing water.

Franklin families and staff in attendance were able to sample fun fruit-infused water, learn about sugar in beverages, participate in fun physical activities, meet registered dieticians, and earn chances to win prizes!

Leading up to the event, the Franklin PTA shared information with families on the importance of water and even had families track their water intake with a fun photo contest and chart. Individuals who submitted their chart usage were entered into a raffle drawing. Those three random winners will be selected on Monday, April 26th.

To help make this event more fun, the Franklin PTA had local businesses in attendance to promote their health and wellness programs like The Little Gym of Roxbury, Three Danes Wellness, Circle Bowl, Randolph YMCA, Kwan Tae Kwan Do, and dieticians from ShopRite.

They also received support from Roxbury Recreation, Roxbury Recycling, ShopRite or Succasunna, BJs Wholesale Club in Ledgewood, and a few Roxbury High School students.

Franklin School PTA was one of 25 local PTAs to win a $1,000 grant. In conjunction with its national brand Nestle Pure Life, the grant enabled Franklin to educate families about the importance of drinking water as part of National PTA’s Healthy Hydration program. Sidelined in 2020, Roxbury Spring Sports Returns
Roxbury High School’s spring sports athletes — forced by COVID-19 school closings to sit out last year — are headed this week for their first taste of competition since 2019. With their Spring Break scrimmages out of the way, the spring sports participants are scheduled to begin playing games that count, (although the golf team got an early start with April 13 and April 14 matches).

“We’re really excited for our spring sports that did not have a chance at all last year,” said Roxbury High School Principal Dominick Miller at a recent Roxbury School Board meeting. “We have boys and girls lacrosse. We have softball and baseball. Track and field. We’re really excited for these kids to have an opportunity to compete this spring. They missed it last spring, and we’re really excited to see the Roxbury Gaels in action this spring.”

The principal inadvertently left out boys tennis, which has its season starter on April 19 against Parsippany. His words of enthusiasm were echoed by Roxbury School Board Member Kathy Purcell. “I’m just so happy for the students that they can get back into playing sports,” she said at the board meeting. “I’m sure it was devastating they couldn’t play last year, and I’m really happy to hear that our spring sports are going to go forward. I attribute a lot of that credit to the administration. I’m just very pleased that it's happening. Good for them.”

Baseball is among the teams scheduled for games this week. Its season-opener on Monday — at home at 4 p.m. — will be against Chatham, a team it beat in four of its last five meetings. Roxbury baseball has high hopes for dominating appearances on the mound by lefthanded senior pitcher Jack Findlay, who has committed to play for Notre Dame, as well as senior shortstop Justin Bosland, who is headed for Northeastern.

Also playing at home Monday for their season openers will be the boys and girls lacrosse teams and the girls softball team.

“I want to wish the best of luck,” said Roxbury School Board Member Leo Coakley. “Go Gaels to all our sports teams.” Click here to read this coverage from TAPinto Roxbury.org.
Roxbury Gymnastics Updates
Gymnastics performance lists for April 20
As we head into the final stretch of the season, things are starting to wind down around the state. Nonetheless, the past week brought some eye-opening performances, with several teams and gymnasts around the state recording their best scores of the year. Multiple squads carded their highest score of the season by multiple points, while a number of gymnasts put together their best performances of the year. Vernon over Roxbury - Girls lacrosse recap - Apr 19
Madison Hordych and Jordan Lewicki each managed a hat trick for Vernon in its 9-4 win against Roxbury in Succasunna. Lexi Vizzini scored twice and Julia Gregory netted the other goal in the victory. Sydney Riker stopped six shots for Vernon. Emily Christiansen went for three goals in the loss as Mackenzie Pickett turned in the other. Zoe Pickett added to the box score with one assist as Victoria Koenig recorded 11 saves. Click here to this coverage from NJ.com.
Roxbury Baseball/Softball Updates
Roxbury baseball preview, 2021
League: NJAC - American Division / Coach: Greg Trotter (22nd Year) / 2019 Record: 16-11
Key Players: Jack Findlay, Sr., P; Justin Bosland, Sr., SS/P; Beau Braun, Sr., C; Tim Coulthurst, Sr., OF; Nick Hascup, Sr., IF; Jamie Hawley, Sr., 1B; Justin Kurbansade, Sr., P/OF/1B; Matt Seminara, Sr., P/IF; Nick Morales, Jr., P/OF/IF; Robbie Neumeyer, Jr., IF/P; Elliott Trujillo, Jr., P/1B; Justin Ford, So., P/3B; Tommy Simmerano, So., P/3B; Mike Peia, So., C; Matt Ratay, Fr., OF; Colin Richter, Fr., OF.

Outlook: With Notre Dame-bound lefty Jack Findlay on the mound, Roxbury is capable of beating anyone in the state. Few can match the senior’s big-game experience as evidenced by his complete game gems to win sectional titles as a freshman and sophomore. But the Gaels are hardly a one-player team with Northeastern-bound SS/P Justin Bosland healthy sophomore 3B/P Justin Ford primed for breakout seasons. Justin Kurbansade and Matt Seminara are versatile two-way players as well for a Roxbury team short on varsity experience.

Coach’s Comments: Veteran coach Greg Trotter knows he has a team lacking in varsity experience, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to ease these guys into things. Instead, they’ll be challenged early and often in the first half of the season. Trotter is hopeful they’ll be better for it when the weather warms up, which with their pitching could be enough for another state playoff run for a team used to playing into June. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.

Baseball preview, 2021: Flamethrowers & corner nibblers. Meet N.J.’s top pitchers
Some rely heavily on their fastball, others use off-speed pitches to their advantage. There are some who throw in the high 90s, pushing 100 miles per hour. They buckle batters’ legs and turn heads of spectators in amazement. Yes, for at least one New Jersey pitcher, hitting 100 has even become somewhat the norm. Most throw an array of pitches - curveballs, change-ups, sliders. They are the guys in control of the game, the pitchers.

With a large number already having made college commitments, there are plenty of standouts in New Jersey this spring, including Roxbury Senior Jack Findlay - The ace for a team with high expectations, this 6-foot-3, 200-pound lefty is a Notre Dame commit. He was the winning pitcher as a freshman and again as a sophomore in Roxbury’s back-to-back North 1, Group 3 championships. Findlay owns an 8-1 career record, with 68 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings. According to Prep Baseball Report, he’s the No. 8-ranked player in the state for the Class of 2021. He’s also a Perfect Game Preseason All-Northeast selection. Click here to read more from NJ.com.

Roxbury Baseball Wins Season Opener with Walk-Off HR
The Roxbury High School baseball team won its season opener in dramatic fashion on Monday, beating Chatham with a 3-run, walk-off homer by senior Justin Kurbansade. The homer came with two outs in the seventh inning, lifting the Gaels over the Cougars 5-2. Kurbansade collected three hits and drove in all five runs for Roxbury during the game, including two in the sixth inning. Chatham starting pitcher John Kowalczyk struck out 10 in pitching five scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed three hits and walked one.

Senior Dennis Moynihan delivered the first run of the season for Chatham with his solo homer in the fourth inning and freshman outfielder Jackson Hodges homered over the fence in left to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Roxbury pitcher Jack Findlay went five innings allowing four hits and two runs while striking out 12 batters. He was relieved by Matt Seminera who allowed no runs, one hit, one walk and threw one strikeout. Click here to read this coverage from TAPinto Roxbury.

No. 19 Roxbury over Chatham - Baseball recap - Apr 19
Justin Kurbansade plated all five runs for Roxbury, No. 19 in the NJ.com Top 20, in the last two innings as his team walked off over Chatham in a 5-2 final in Succasunna. Roxbury trailed 2-0 entering the sixth. It also saw some strong pitching from Notre Dame-bound ace Jack Findlay, who went five innings allowing four hits and two runs while fanning 12 batters. Matt Seminera provided two innings, which included no runs, one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.

Roxbury over Mendham - Softball recap - Apr 21
Natalie Otto pitched five scoreless innings and also scored two runs as Roxbury rolled to a 10-0, five-inning, victory over Mendham in Succasunna. Otto, a junior, struck out 10 while allowing just one hit and no walks to earn her second career shutout for Roxbury (2-0). Hailey Errichiello homered and went 2-for-4 with a walk, four RBI and three runs scored. Jayden Pennella had three RBI, Kendall Fehsal went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a run, and Cam Fehsal scored two runs. Heather Doyle had the lone Mendham (0-2) hit. Roxbury Wrestling Updates:
A weight-by-weight preview and picks for North 1 Region Wrestling Tournament
The shortest, wackiest and most unpredictable wrestling season New Jersey has ever seen is quickly approaching the finish line. From the COVID-19 impact, to top wrestlers being put in isolation for the past two weeks, to the selection and seeding process, 2021 has been bizarre. Will the capricious nature of the season continue into this weekend’s regionals? Only time will tell. The North 1 Region (R1-R2) will be hosted by Mount Olive High on Saturday and Sunday with the top four finishers in each of the 14 weights advancing the state tournament April 24-25 at Phillipsburg High School. Click here to read this preview and picks from NJ.com.

State Wrestling Qualifiers: Meet the 224 wrestlers advancing from the regions, 2021
We started with 896 wrestlers in the four region tournaments and as the matches are completed this weekend, we’ll start to identify the wrestlers who will move on to next week’s 2021 NJSIAA / Rothman Orthopaedic State Championships. In the end, 224 will qualify to wrestle next week in Phillipsburg - exactly half of the traditional number of wrestlers in a non-pandemic season. Click here to read from NJ.com every qualifier (so far) from Saturday’s action.
Gaels Going Green
Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.

To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.
Lake Hopatcong Foundation:
Help us with a little Spring Cleaning
When debris—plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, etc.—is tossed on the ground, it can get washed into storm drains and end up in our waterways. In addition to being unsightly, litter can harm aquatic life and decrease oxygen levels in the water when it decays. If we each take some time to clean up our communities, we can make a BIG difference. If you're itching to get a little spring cleaning done, below are two cleanups that will get you outside in the spring weather and protect our watershed at the same time. Happy spring cleaning!

School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.

Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.

We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.

Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

NJ Human Services Extends COVID-19 Child Care Assistance Programs Through End of School Year

The state will be extending several COVID-19-related child care assistance programs for families and providers through the end of June 2021. As part of the public health emergency, the state launched the New Jersey School-Age Tuition Assistance Program to help families pay for care for their school-age child in need of child care as a result of COVID-19 remote learning schools schedules.

For families who have been approved for School-Age Tuition Assistance, payments for your child’s care will now continue through June 30, 2021. No new applications are being accepted.

If you need help paying for child care, you can apply for the state’s Child Care Subsidy Program. To give you a sense of whether you would be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy Program, the income maximum for a family of four is $52,400 annually. Use our calculator to see if you are likely to be eligible or visit our parent page to learn more about this program. If you need help finding child care, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) Agency. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov.
