Kennedy School
Celebrates National Pizza Day
Teachers Amber Davis and Lorey Deeb at Kennedy Elementary School had some fun last week with their students on National Pizza Day with cross-curricular activities.

The students at Kennedy School had some educational fun on Wednesday, February 10th, National Pizza Day, thanks to Anthony Franco's Pizza located at 274 Rt 10 West in Succasunna. The students participated in cross-curricular activities that all related to pizza for the day. Activities included math, writing, reading, science, and their specials to make the day a unique and memorable experience.

Davis and Deeb are teaching their classes considering the whole child. With great excitement, students created step-by-step descriptive essays while teaming up with Tom Ptasznik of Anthony Franco’s. He provided a video of him making pizza at the restaurant and live steamed with the students to participate in a Q & A session on “How to Make a Pizza”.

Students and staff at the school were also treated to pizza by Anthony Franco’s of Roxbury to make the day just a little more memorable as the students smelled the basil and tomato aroma.

Kennedy Elementary School is thankful for this partnership and for making National Pizza Day memorable and exciting for everyone at Kennedy School. Click here to read this story on your website under "In the News".
RHS Performing Arts Presents Godspell this Spring
Roxbury High School is proud to present its 2021 Spring Musical production of Godspell, conceived by John-Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen Schwartz. This immensely successful rock opera was first produced on Broadway in 1971, where it broke new ground in its stage treatment of the historical Jesus Christ. Based on the Gospel according to St Matthew, it deals with the last days of Jesus, and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables. And yet it is something more - a spiritual experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of the family of man. The cast are ordinary people, improvising scenery and costumes, and using many well-known theatrical devices, pantomime, vaudeville and varied musical styles to interpret one of humanity's greatest stories.

Due to the ongoing health crisis, the Roxbury High School Performing Arts Department are only able to offer live performances to close family and friends of cast members. However, the production will be available for public viewing through an online streaming event scheduled for March 26, 27, and 28th. These are scheduled streams and must be watched on the date and time specified. You can order your passcode to watch the online stream by clicking here or by scanning the QR code on the attached flyer. Passcodes will be usable on one digital device only.

We hope you are able to join us for this theatrical event!

If you have any questions or problems registering, please contact Patrick Hachey at phachey@roxbury.org or by calling at 973-584-1200 x.1250.

A Roxbury Teacher's Campaign Urges Vaccinations as Tributes to Life
With help from her family, a Roxbury teacher who lost her husband to COVID-19 is spearheading a campaign that urges people to get vaccinated in honor of someone, or something, they care about.

Marla Sarrel, who teaches at Franklin School in Succasunna, said she and her family got the idea for the This Jab’s For You social media campaign after the loss of her husband, Louis, in April.

“Right after my husband passed, there was a nurse I never met who said she felt very touched by my husband and would sit with him and hold his hand because she knew we couldn’t,” Sarrel said. “That was a beautiful gift to me.”

Making a Tribute
Sarrel lives in Rockaway, but her Roxbury roots are deep. Her father, Seymour Geldzahler, was a local developer who had an office on Main Street in Succasunna for more than 50 years. Sarrel said Marla Terrace in Ledgewood is named after her. In the same fashion, Sarrel hopes people will view their vaccinations as tributes to people – or even things such as businesses - important to their lives.

“We realize everybody been affected by COVID one way or another, whether you lost somebody or not,” she said. “Everybody is going to get their vaccination for one reason or another, whether it’s to see their grandchildren or parents again or for small businesses that were lost or to see the lights back on Broadway.”

Essentially, "This Jab’s For You" is an effort “to help people get over the hesitancy,” about being vaccinated, Sarrel said. To learn more about the campaign, click here. To participate, vaccination recipients should tag @thisjabsforyou and/or #thisjabsforyou in a post-injection social media post. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Candidates should also show strong leadership skills, academic performance, and participation in extracurricular activities, and work or family responsibilities. Applicants must plan to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school. Financial need is not a factor for consideration. Applicants must reside or currently attend school in Morris or Somerset Counties.

Completed applications must be received no later than February 19, 2021, via the Google forms (links on our website at www.jlmnj.org) and supporting information should be emailed to grants@jlmnj.org. All details are on our website. Winners will be notified by email in early April.

Gaels Going Green
Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.

To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.
Idle Free Schools - Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
Winter has arrived! With colder weather upon us, your district green team wanted to share this important quick PSA.

In January 2019, the Roxbury Board of Education began supporting an idling reduction campaign at the Roxbury Schools, which included an idling reduction policy.

Part of the policy included the following bullet points. All those in bold and in red are what our transportation department and district have already been doing. Not bad and we're on our way to better!
  • Turn off school bus engines while waiting to load and to unload students
  • Turn off vehicles when parents are parked and waiting to pick up and drop off children
  • Installing "idle-free zone" signs at school drop-off and pick-up locations
  • Use the newest buses for the longest routes and maintain buses properly to eliminate any visible exhaust
  • Complete school-bus driver training on eliminating idling
  • Encourage parent, student, faculty, and staff drivers to turn off their engines after 10 seconds if they plan to remain at a location for more than 30 seconds, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times.

Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for 5 minutes a day, it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road saving 1.6 Million tons of CO2? Roxbury Schools are continuing to support this campaign to reduce student's exposure to air toxics that are emitted from idling vehicles.

We encourage our families and staff to sign pledge forms saying that they won't idle unnecessarily. You will see idling signs posted outside the school. Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds. Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!

Let's all work together for a cleaner future! Follow our initiative online here!
School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.

Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.

We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.

Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.
Lake Hopatcong Foundation, Commission: Build a rain garden, get a rebate - Mar 3
A free educational webinar on the basics of rain garden installation will be presented at noon and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3.

It will be hosted by the Lake Hopatcong Commission (LHC), in partnership with the Lake Hopatcong Foundation (LHF) and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program.

Along with the webinar, participants will have an opportunity to schedule a free 30-minute virtual consultation, in which they can work one-on-one with a Rutgers landscape architect to plan a customized rain garden for their property, according to a release issued by the non-profit Lake Hopatcong Foundation Thursday.

Sixteen participants from Jefferson, Hopatcong, Mount Arlington, or Roxbury, who reside within the Lake Hopatcong watershed, will be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $450, after installation of a rain garden and inspection by the Rutgers team, according to the foundation, with offices in Landing.

A rain garden is a collection of native shrubs, perennials, and flowers planted in a small depression, designed to temporarily hold and soak in rainwater runoff from impermeable surfaces such as roofs, driveways, and patios, effectively controlling pollution and mitigating flooding.

For more information or to register for the webinar, visit lakehopatcongcommission.org. Click here to read more from the Roxbury Register.
