REMINDER: District Closing Announcement
Just a reminder, there will be no school on Monday, January 18th to observe Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Schools will reopen on Tuesday, January 19th.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility, and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King's character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness, and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit. ~Coretta Scott King, The King Center.

Superintendent Communications - Jan 14
Dear Parents:
I sincerely hope that your holidays were joyful, and you found a way to celebrate with family and friends even if it was only virtually. While these days continue to present atypical challenges, they have also reminded us to value what is most important - our families, our health, and our connection to humanity.
After reviewing the district data on the health of our students and staff, conversations with local health officials, our nurses, and our administration, we will re-open our doors to our hybrid in-person instruction. Grades PreK through 8 will continue with Phase II and the high school will return to Phase I with the continuation of streaming students into classrooms. Schedule details for virtual Mondays and hybrid Tuesdays through Fridays will be provided in a letter from your building principals. Virtual Mondays will continue throughout February.
It is understandable that some parents may wish to switch their child(ren)’s model for learning. Therefore, ONLY if you are interested in moving your child(ren) from virtual to hybrid or from hybrid to virtual, please complete the form located HERE by 3:00 PM Friday, January 15th. Changes at grades 5 through 12 will become effective January 19th and will remain until February 15th at which time parents will have the opportunity to re-evaluate the situation. Switching learning models for grades kindergarten through fourth grade will take a few days to process since it may involve changing teachers and/or schools and will remain in effect until March 18th, the beginning of the third trimester. This is due to the fact that we have been able to designate elementary teachers as fully virtual or in-person and will need to ensure appropriate class sizes. Principals will reach out to families individually to discuss.
Transportation: Please note that transportation continues to modify routes based on community needs. The Transportation Director will send out a Honeywell by Monday afternoon. It is suggested that all families review Genesis to confirm pick up and drop off times. Those who switch from virtual to in-person instruction, please be prepared to transport your child(ren) during the week of January 19th. You will receive a communication from the Transportation Department as soon as a stop is scheduled.
Health Screening: We will continue to use the rSchoolToday app to conduct daily health screenings. It is imperative that you DO NOT send your child to school if he/she is exhibiting any symptoms related to illness. Please understand that we will send home any symptomatic child which will also trigger quarantine for those considered close contacts. We must work together if our re-opening is to be successful. Since ill students can stream into the classroom, practice extra precautions during this time. Your cooperation, thoughtfulness, and consideration are greatly appreciated. The Roxbury community has been exemplary in taking responsibility and caring for others. Let’s continue to be a model for others to follow.
Quarantining: In the effort to keep as many individuals in school as possible and in consultation with our local health officer and guidance from the Department of Health, quarantining will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, close contacts will be quarantined for symptomatic students which may or may not result in the transition of full classrooms from hybrid to fully virtual. Therefore, I, again, implore your cooperation in keeping symptomatic students home until their symptoms subside.
Vaccine: As you are aware, pre-registration is occurring for the vaccine. At this time, the Department of Health is administering vaccinations to those who are part of 1A as well as police, fire, and first responders. Several individuals in the district have received their vaccines or have secured a date. Pre-registration is open to the public. If you have not pre-registered, you may do so HERE.
Survey: We continue to monitor the social emotional and mental health of our students. While a survey was distributed to high school students via the high school administration, we would like to offer this survey as an opportunity for parents to speak with their child(ren) and provide us with some feedback. Please take a moment as your input will help direct us in providing support for our students. This SURVEY will remain open until noon on Friday, January 22nd.
Athletics: The high school began Season 2 of athletics on January 4th with the start of ice hockey. Boys & girls basketball began practice on January 11th. Competition cheer has also resumed in-district practicing. Middle school boys and girls basketball is scheduled to begin on January 19th. As long as we continue to be vigilant and responsible, we will be able to provide healthy experiences for our students.
Mr. Mason also wishes to remind families that physicals are now past due for Season 2A (swimming, winter track & field) which will begin on February 1st. Season 3 (gymnastics, girls volleyball and wrestling) physical paperwork is due February 12th with a start date of March 1st. Spring sports (baseball, softball, track & field, boys/girls lacrosse, golf, boys tennis) will begin April 1st. Physical paperwork for students wishing to participate in the Spring are due March 1st. Athletic physical paperwork packets are available on the website or in the RHS main entrance. Please contact Stuart Mason, Director of Athletics & Student Activities with any questions at 973 584 1200 x1254.
While we will continue to monitor the health of our district, we are excited to re-open our doors to our children once again this school year. It is only through our partnership that we will find success. As writer Kevin J. Anderson reminds us, “A moment of consideration often prevents a thousand apologies.” We can do this, but only together. Wear your mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands, stay home when feeling ill, and be proud of the fact that your efforts will make a positive difference in the lives of many. Yours in Education,
Loretta L. Radulic, Superintendent of Schools

A Teacher’s Impact, A Life Remembered
Last week, Roxbury Schools was notified of the passing of retired Jefferson Elementary School Teacher Kathryn “Kathy” LaDuke. Kathy taught elementary students for 17 years at Jefferson School before retiring in 2015. Kathy lost her battle with OCVID-19 but she will not be forgotten.
If a good teacher can inspire hope, imagination, and a love of learning, consider for a moment what a great one can do! Kathy LaDuke wasn’t just a truly great teacher whose impact remains on staff and students alike.
Members of the Jefferson faculty reflected and shared memories to honor Kathy’s passing.
Principal Melissa Cosgrove recalled how Kathy was a keeper of treasure. Her classroom was filled to the brim. “Her room was usually a fun-filled disaster and she would stay late to organize (even writing little reminders on her fingers). The organization never came but it was one of the things everyone loved about her. “We love you Kathy and our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.”
Paraprofessional Carla Dexter added, “It’s impossible to choose one memory of Kathy but her humor, kindness, and generosity will not be forgotten.” Click here to read more shared memories of Kathy LaDuke on our website under "In the News".

KES Student Spotlight: Victoria's Tips, Tricks, and Facts to Help Save our Planet by Recycling
As our minds continue to be filled with thoughts and uncertainties about the pandemic. Victoria Phelan Fonseca, a 4th-grade student at Kennedy School in Mrs. Leister's class, has bigger concerns about the lasting effects of pollution, especially plastics filling our landfills, environments, and oceans. Plastics are destroying our oceans and the habitats that millions of sea animals call home. Each week Victoria will be giving tips, tricks, and facts to all Roxbury families so we can help slow this effort and continue to raise awareness on this important crisis.
This week's tips, tricks, and facts from Victoria is, "Did you know more than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year?"

Idle Free Schools - Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
Winter has arrived! With colder weather upon us, your district green team wanted to share this important quick PSA.
In January 2019, the Roxbury Board of Education began supporting an idling reduction campaign at the Roxbury Schools, which included an idling reduction policy.
Part of the policy included the following bullet points. All those in bold and in red are what our transportation department and district have already been doing. Not bad and we're on our way to better!
- Turn off school bus engines while waiting to load and to unload students
- Turn off vehicles when parents are parked and waiting to pick up and drop off children
- Installing "idle-free zone" signs at school drop-off and pick-up locations
- Use the newest buses for the longest routes and maintain buses properly to eliminate any visible exhaust
- Complete school-bus driver training on eliminating idling
- Encourage parent, student, faculty, and staff drivers to turn off their engines after 10 seconds if they plan to remain at a location for more than 30 seconds, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times.
Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for 5 minutes a day, it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road saving 1.6 Million tons of CO2? Roxbury Schools are continuing to support this campaign to reduce student's exposure to air toxics that are emitted from idling vehicles.
We encourage our families and staff to sign pledge forms saying that they won't idle unnecessarily. You will see idling signs posted outside the school. Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds. Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
Let's all work together for a cleaner future! Follow our initiative online here!

School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.
