Superintendent Communications - Jan 28
Dear Roxbury Community:

In my previous correspondence, I implored the community’s cooperation in order to promote the overall health of the district. In reviewing district data and in communication with building leadership and our nurses, our community has been exemplary. Thank you for repeatedly demonstrating your thoughtfulness and care of others. Roxbury is truly special.

Even with your dedicated vigilance, we know that children may become ill and often at the most inopportune times. In those cases where a child becomes symptomatic while in class, we will require a parent to immediately pick him/her up from school. Guidance from the New Jersey Department of Health has, once again, revised its contact tracing protocols when school districts operate in the orange or high-risk COVID-19 indicator. Therefore, any COVID-19 symptomatic student or staff member will be required to quarantine for 10 days or receive a negative PCR test in order to return to school. In accordance with these updated guidelines, rapid test results will no longer be accepted. In addition, we are requesting that any sibling of a symptomatic student remain home as directed by the local health department/school nurse until all symptoms within the family have subsided and/or they have negative PCR tests.

Lastly, as per the NJDOH guidelines for quarantining, those students and staff who may be considered close contacts of a probable (symptomatic) case will be permitted to remain in school unless or until the student or staff member who exhibited symptoms tests positive for COVID-19 whereby our protocol of quarantining those students/ staff who are within the six-foot parameter of the symptomatic individual for 15 minutes or greater during the day will resume. Daily health monitoring will continue. It is imperative that the rSchoolToday app is completed every day for each student. Illness guidance can be located on the district nursing page found here or page 21 of the latest NJDOH guidelines found here.

Today (Jan. 28) is the start date for following this new protocol. If your child is currently under quarantine, please continue to follow the directive and return date guidance.

This revision by the Department of Health will afford our school district greater continuity and will provide less disruption to families. Again, on behalf of our full school community, we thank you for partnering with us to promote health and wellness.

One last reminder, since we have used one snow day, February 8th is now a school day which will continue to follow our virtual Monday pattern.

Yours in Education,

Loretta L. Radulic, Superintendent of Schools

RHS Choir Department Presents: RHS Virtual Winter Choral Concert
After three months of creative choral rehearsing, several weeks of audio and video editing, and lots of trial and error, the Roxbury High School Vocal Music Department is proud to release our 2020-21 Virtual Winter Choral Concert. While we look forward to the day when we can return to our traditional in-person concerts, we are very proud of the work that our students have done under these difficult circumstances and are confident that you will enjoy the final product of their efforts.

Click the image above which links to a PDF document that lists the members of each ensemble as well as the performance selections for each group. The title of each piece is a hyperlink that will take you to the YouTube video of that song’s virtual choir performance. Each performance is a collection of individual recordings that our students completed in their bedrooms, basements, garages, or any quiet place that they could find to record. They then digitally submitted their videos to the directors who began the process of putting together the choral performances. Overall, our students submitted over 330 individual videos to create the 10 songs that you are about to view.

It is our hope that we can gather for a live concert sometime soon. In the meantime, we appreciate you taking the time to watch our Virtual Concert and hope that our gift of song brings you some joy!

Since 1986, the Junior League of Morristown (JLM) has awarded the High School Voluntarism Scholarship to more than 145 Morris and Somerset County high school seniors. These scholarships, which total more than $235,000, represent our commitment to developing young volunteers in our community.

Applicants must plan to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school. Financial need is not a factor for consideration. Applicants must reside or currently attend school in Morris or Somerset Counties.

Completed applications must be received no later than February 19, 2021, via the Google forms (links on our website at www.jlmnj.org) and supporting information should be emailed to grants@jlmnj.org. All details are on our website. Winners will be notified by email in early April.

Gaels Going Green
Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.

To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.
KES Student Spotlight: Victoria's Tips, Tricks, and Facts to Help Save our Planet by Recycling
As our minds continue to be filled with thoughts and uncertainties about the pandemic. Victoria Phelan Fonseca, a 4th-grade student at Kennedy School in Mrs. Leister's class, has bigger concerns about the lasting effects of pollution, especially plastics filling our landfills, environments, and oceans. Plastics are destroying our oceans and the habitats that millions of sea animals call home. Each week Victoria will be giving tips, tricks, and facts to all Roxbury families so we can help slow this effort and continue to raise awareness on this important crisis.

This week's tips, tricks, and facts from Victoria is, "NEVER put your recyclables in plastic bags and never put any plastic bags in your regular recycling bin or recycling dumpster. Plastic bags and plastic wrap get jammed in recycling processing equipment, which causes recycling to be expensive to process."
Check out Victoria's past tips, trips, and facts on our website here.
Idle Free Schools - Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
Winter has arrived! With colder weather upon us, your district green team wanted to share this important quick PSA.

In January 2019, the Roxbury Board of Education began supporting an idling reduction campaign at the Roxbury Schools, which included an idling reduction policy.

Part of the policy included the following bullet points. All those in bold and in red are what our transportation department and district have already been doing. Not bad and we're on our way to better!
  • Turn off school bus engines while waiting to load and to unload students
  • Turn off vehicles when parents are parked and waiting to pick up and drop off children
  • Installing "idle-free zone" signs at school drop-off and pick-up locations
  • Use the newest buses for the longest routes and maintain buses properly to eliminate any visible exhaust
  • Complete school-bus driver training on eliminating idling
  • Encourage parent, student, faculty, and staff drivers to turn off their engines after 10 seconds if they plan to remain at a location for more than 30 seconds, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times.

Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for 5 minutes a day, it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road saving 1.6 Million tons of CO2? Roxbury Schools are continuing to support this campaign to reduce student's exposure to air toxics that are emitted from idling vehicles.

We encourage our families and staff to sign pledge forms saying that they won't idle unnecessarily. You will see idling signs posted outside the school. Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds. Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!

Let's all work together for a cleaner future! Follow our initiative online here!
School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.

Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.

We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.

Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.
