Carol Scheneck Returns as Roxbury School Board President
Roxbury School Board President Carol Scheneck on Monday was chosen by her colleagues on the board to serve another term at the helm. The unanimous decision took place at the board’s annual reorganization meeting, a session held remotely via WebEx. The board also re-named board member Dan Masi as vice-president.
Roxbury Schools Business Administrator Joseph Mondanaro presided over the swearing-in of re-elected board members Joseph Bocchino IV, Heather Champagne and Anne Colucci who won re-election in November to new 3-year-long terms.
During Monday’s meeting, Scheneck expressed optimism for 2021. “This board will continue to face difficult challenges this year as we did last year,” she said. “I would like to wish everybody a happy, healthy and productive new year, and I look forward to working with all of you in this year of great hope.”
Roxbury Schools Superintendent Loretta Radulic played off Scheneck’s comment. “Interestingly, my prior board president used to say, ‘We’ll come up with a phrase or a word that’s going to be The Year of,’” Radulic said. “And I think Carol just did it; I think this is going to be The Year of Hope.”
The superintendent said she plans to make an announcement on Jan. 14 relating to whether Roxbury schools can return to at least some level of in-classroom instruction. "It is my desire to open the schools ... and to move forward," she said. "But as much as I want to do that, I have to have conversations with our local health officials and I do need to see what the trends are in Roxbury before that decision can truly be made." Roxbury Early Act Clubs
Spread Cheer and Raise Funds
for those in Need
The four elementary schools in Roxbury Township each have their own Early Act Clubs comprised of third and fourth-graders who help volunteer to reach out to the community and to the world. This service club of elementary students is sponsored by the Roxbury Rotary Club.
Two of the four clubs recently completed various service projects.
At Franklin School, those fourth grade Early Act members created about 50 holiday cards before winter break for the staff and patients at Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, NJ.
According to the Franklin Club advisor and Kindergarten teacher, Jennifer Maurer, “The students brainstormed messages to write in the cards and colored holiday pictures. The cards arrived at the hospital on Christmas Eve.”
Across town, the Jefferson School Early Act Club completed two service projects in recent months. The first back in November. The Jefferson Early Act invited the whole school to make Veteran’s Day cards for veterans in the Veteran Hospital of Delaware. Jefferson Club advisor and Kindergarten teacher, Meghan Storm shared, “We were able to mail the cards to the vets and put huge smiles on their faces.”
Then in December, Early Act Club members decided to help out Roxbury Social Services during the holiday season by hosting a penny war among the students at the school. “We planned to use the money raised to purchase gift cards to help Roxbury families in need,” said Storm.
The class that raised the most money received a special Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day. Kasey Fox’s second-grade class won the competition by raising $210. Overall, Jefferson Elementary School raised a grand total of $792 to help local families in need. Click here to read this story on your website under "In the News".

Jefferson First Grade "Giving Tree"
a Huge Success
Leading up to the holidays, first-graders at Jefferson Elementary School put out a call for hats, gloves, scarves, and socks for Roxbury Social Services. Their “First Grade Giving Tree” community service project was a success according to Derrick.
“Even though we switched to all-remote learning, our students and their parents dropped off items at school for our tree! Members of our community, including teachers, staff, and even some retired teachers pitched in to help as well!”
Thanks to all the donations Derrick will be donating six large bags of hats, gloves, scarves, and socks to Roxbury Social Services this week.
“I am so happy that even during these challenging times, our Jefferson School community was still able to show tremendous koala-kindness and generosity!”
Jefferson Principal Melissa Cosgrove commended their efforts sharing, “Thank you so much first-grade team for continuing this tradition of community service! It really teaches the students about the spirit of giving. I am so happy that the current circumstances didn’t hinder this service project for our children.” Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".

NJSCA Hall of Fame Induction - Jan 10
This year Roxbury is fortunate to have two former coaches being inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame! Frank Dekmar and Jim Fiorello had outstanding coaching careers and are great representatives for the Gaels.
Frank Dekmar
Frank began coaching the Lady Gaels basketball team in 1986. Over the 17 years that he was at the helm, his teams won 239 games, making Frank the winningest coach in the history of Roxbury girl’s basketball. His teams also won two Iron Hills Conference Championships, had two Morris County Final appearances, two state sectional Final appearances and seven Morris County Final Four appearances. He had the privilege of coaching four 1,000 point scorers. He also had numerous players continue their basketball careers in college. Coach Dekmar has on multiple occasions been recognized as coach of the year by the Star Ledger, The Daily Record and the Daily Advance. Frank went on to become an assistant women’s coach at East Stroudsburg.
Frank also served as an assistant coach for the Roxbury football program. Over Frank’s 34 years of coaching Roxbury Football, he was involved with every level of the program and helped the Gaels to six Iron Hills Conference Championships and three State Championships. Frank began his Roxbury coaching career in 1982 under fellow NJSCA Class of 2020 Inductee Jim Fiorello.
Frank was a mentor for many younger coaches whom he shared his passion and love of coaching. He was respected for his unwavering commitment to the improvement of his players. Frank could often be overheard reminding his athletes that, “Today is a great day to get better.” A phrase and an attitude that many have not forgotten and are now repeating to their own teams. Coach Frank Dekmar has made a significant contribution to Roxbury athletics. In 2017 he was inducted into the Roxbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame. His legacy will not be forgotten.
Jim Fiorello
Jim Fiorello was a standout athlete at Netcong High School, where he graduated in 1958. He played college football at San Francisco State University before returning to the area to coach at Roxbury. Jim is being inducted into the NJSCA because of his work as the head football coach of the Gaels from 1973- 1989. Coach Fiorello had a record of 100-53-5. His 1973 team captured the outright Iron Area Conference Championship and his 1978 and 1986 teams won a share of the IHC-Iron titles. Coach Fiorello’s teams qualified for the state playoffs in 1978, 1986, and 1987. His 1973 team was declared 2nd in North II Group II.
Coach Fiorello’s teams added to the Gaels gridiron reputation of being tough, disciplined and fiercely competitive. All qualities modeled by their head coach Jim Fiorello. Jim coached numerous athletes that would go on to play football collegiately some even making it to the NFL. He was inducted into the New Jersey Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000 and The Roxbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. With the support of many great assistant coaches, dedicated players, involved parents, and community involvement, Coach Fiorello had a rewarding and successful coaching career and made a significant contribution to the history and tradition of Roxbury football.
This is indeed an honor when you consider that they have been selected from nominees throughout New Jersey. The 26th annual NJSCA Hall of Fame Awards program will be held virtually on Sunday, January 10th at 11:00 am. Click here to watch the program. The event will start promptly at 9am, and the room will open up for people to join at 8:45am.
Go Gaels!

KES Student Spotlight: Victoria's Tips, Tricks, and Facts to Help Save our Planet by Recycling
As our minds continue to be filled with thoughts and uncertainties about the pandemic. Victoria Phelan Fonseca, a 4th-grade student at Kennedy School in Mrs. Leister's class, has bigger concerns about the lasting effects of pollution, especially plastics filling our landfills, environments, and oceans. Plastics are destroying our oceans and the habitats that millions of sea animals call home. Each week Victoria will be giving tips, tricks, and facts to all Roxbury families so we can help slow this effort and continue to raise awareness on this important crisis.
This week's tips, tricks, and facts from Victoria is, "Walmart will take more than plastic shopping bags!" See the image below to see what else they accept!

Idle Free Schools - Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
Winter has arrived! With colder weather upon us, your district green team wanted to share this important quick PSA.
In January 2019, the Roxbury Board of Education began supporting an idling reduction campaign at the Roxbury Schools, which included an idling reduction policy.
Part of the policy included the following bullet points. All those in bold and in red are what our transportation department and district have already been doing. Not bad and we're on our way to better!
- Turn off school bus engines while waiting to load and to unload students
- Turn off vehicles when parents are parked and waiting to pick up and drop off children
- Installing "idle-free zone" signs at school drop-off and pick-up locations
- Use the newest buses for the longest routes and maintain buses properly to eliminate any visible exhaust
- Complete school-bus driver training on eliminating idling
- Encourage parent, student, faculty, and staff drivers to turn off their engines after 10 seconds if they plan to remain at a location for more than 30 seconds, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times.
Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for 5 minutes a day, it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road saving 1.6 Million tons of CO2? Roxbury Schools are continuing to support this campaign to reduce student's exposure to air toxics that are emitted from idling vehicles.
We encourage our families and staff to sign pledge forms saying that they won't idle unnecessarily. You will see idling signs posted outside the school. Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds. Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
Let's all work together for a cleaner future! Follow our initiative online here!

School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

The Department of Human Services said Monday that it had begun taking applications for its COVID-19 child care tuition assistance program. Families with incomes up to $75,000 that need either full or part-time child care due to their child's remote learning schedule are eligible to apply.
Tuition assistance will be available through Dec. 30 for eligible residents with children 5 to 13 years old. Applicants must show proof of income and a notice or announcement from their child's school of a remote learning schedule. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov.
