Summer Learning & Rox Camp
Three years ago, the Roxbury School District began to review and revise our expectations for the summer learning experience with some substantial changes from the traditional summer reading assignment. The work focused on reframing the summer learning experience to align with what the research indicates, that access to high-interest learning materials and opportunities for skills maintenance is paramount to reducing the potential for the “summer slide.” Our summer program has been enhanced with a focus on choice as well as celebration. As we conclude the 2020-2021 school year, we have continued to reflect on feedback received from students, parents, and teachers about last summer’s learning as well as the value and goals associated with summer learning experiences. In doing so, we also recognize the high value of social emotional wellness as being critical to the development of our students. For these reasons, this summer’s experience will be strongly recommended, but not required. We will continue to offer a wide array of opportunities that are interdisciplinary in nature and will support students’ continued interaction with meaningful learning experiences.
Specific high school honors and AP courses will have summer requirements due to the scope and sequence of the curriculum. In these cases, students will be provided with these expectations prior to departing in June. All other learning experiences in grades 1-12 will be strongly recommended with the overarching expectation being that all students “prepare for tomorrow” by striving for excellence each day.
The success of student participation requires a joint effort of encouragement from the district and the home so students can return to school in September prepared to learn. It is our hope that this program continues to serve our overriding focus of providing expanded choice and exposure, but also provides meaningful connections to a variety of learning experiences that are exciting and individualized which encourage participation to support preparation for the 2021-2022 school year. Links to the appropriate grade band and content websites outlining these experience can be found here:
Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the appropriate content supervisor or me.
Sincerely,
Charles Seipp, Ed. D., Assistant Superintendent

Pave Your Legacy Campaign
Kicks Off in Roxbury
Become part of Roxbury’s history and pave the way for future students with the kick-off of the Pave Your Legacy paver campaign with the Roxbury Schools.
When the Grey Building roof and crumbling cupola were replaced in 2019, the old bell atop the building didn’t go back up. Instead, a new enclosed structure was installed. Not wanting to lose its history, the district asked the community where they wanted to see the bell placed, in front of the Grey Building or at Roxbury High School. With more than 700 responses, the decision was to overwhelmingly install the bell in front of the Grey Building to serve as a reminder of our past.
If you’ve driven down North Hillside Avenue in recent months, you’ve seen the housing structure being built on the front lawn in front of the Grey Building. Now it’s time to lay the pavers. You can inscribe a permanent paver, or several pavers, on the walkway to and around the Grey Building Bell at the Lincoln/Roosevelt Complex on Hillside Avenue. Each paver is $25 and donations to Pave Your Legacy will fund this project and an archway for our graduates to walk through at Roxbury High School.
One inscribed paver requires a donation of $25 to the campaign, which is open to individuals, families, businesses, and the community which will serve as a true and permanent reminder of your support. Pavers are 6x9 inches in size and can be inscribed with up to four lines of up to 16 characters per line, including spaces.
These pavers make for a great graduation gift!
Some other ideas for inscriptions include:
- Your family’s name
- Your name and graduation year
- A favorite teacher or class
- A team, activity, or club that impacted your life
- The name of your business
- In honor of a friend or family member
- In memory of a special person or pet
- A school organization special to you: booster club, PTA, band
Order your paver online at www.roxbury.org/PaveYourLegacy or download the pdf form and return it by mail or email to goodnews@roxbury.org. Please allow 4-6 weeks for the paver to be engraved and installed. You will receive two emails. One when your paver order has been placed and a second when the paver is installed at the Grey Building Bell. All inscriptions will be reviewed and approved. The district will be holding an unveiling ceremony to kick off the 2021-2022 school year at the end of August.
Make sure your legacy is a part of our history!

Roxbury tubist will play free concert next month
Zachary Solano of Ledgewood, an accomplished tuba player, will be among those to play a free concert in Morris Township in July. The free concert, performed by the Hanover Wind Symphony, is entitled "Bring People To Music and Music To People... Again" and will be staged at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6, in an open air format at Ginty Field on Woodland Avenue in Morris Township.
Audience members should come to the concert with lawn chairs or blankets, and observe all applicable CDC guidelines.
The 2020 Hanover Wind Symphony summer music scholarship winner and an accomplished tubist, Zachary Solano of Ledgewood, a graduating senior at Roxbury High School, will be playing with the wind band on July 6. He will perform a tuba solo as part of "Beelzebub," by Andrea Catozzi.
Reflecting on the past year, Solano says, "When the pandemic forced all of us to quarantine and caused my school to become virtual, I was shocked at how different things would be for me as I settled into my 'new normal,' but saw an opportunity to make the most of the almost infinite time I had been given. I had to adapt quickly, but I was able to rise to the challenge. I began spending all of my free time practicing the tuba, and used the money awarded to me by the Hanover Wind Symphony to take lessons with world-renowned musicians.
"Although the pandemic has been challenging, I am grateful for the time I have been afforded to focus on my craft. A silver lining is that Covid-19 allowed me to become a more mature musician, and the generosity of the Hanover Wind Symphony made many of the experiences I had during the pandemic possible."
The 85-member Hanover Wind Symphony is a unique extension of the great American tradition of adult music performance. One of only a handful of outstanding, community-based, adult wind bands in New Jersey, the Hanover Wind Symphony delights audiences of all ages by giving a contemporary twist to traditional favorites. The large orchestra is made up exclusively of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. For further information about the summer concert, visit www.hanoverwinds.org. Roxbury Rock Painting Event:
A Chance to Bond Teams and Groups Through Kindness - June 27
Coaches of local sports teams might want to consider urging their athletes to attend a Succasunna event Sunday where volunteers will gather to paint inspirational messages on stones to be distributed around town, says one of the organizers.
The 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. event, at the Horseshoe Lake Park Pavilion, would be a great way to engender some off-field team solidification, suggested Roxbury High School Interact Club Secretary Julia Kest.
"We are really hoping that sports teams and other groups will come out and use it as a team-bonding kindness event," said Kest, a Roxbury High School freshman.
At the gathering, stones provided by Fullerton Grounds Maintenance of Kenvil will be painted with uplifting messages. The stones will later be placed throughout Roxbury. The stones will be distributed in honor of Maya Guberman and Christopher D’Amico, two young people whose deaths inspired movements promoting kindness. School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

Roxbury Plans Fireworks to Honor COVID Workers - Aug 13
The township is planning to honor, with a free fireworks display, the first-responders, healthcare staff and others who worked during the COVID-19 crisis, said Roxbury Councilman Fred Hall and Roxbury Rotarian Steve Alford.
The event is scheduled to take place on the evening of Aug. 13 at the Horseshoe Lake Park beach.
"This is not the Roxbury Beach Blast," stressed Hall, referring to the annual event that was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. "This is more a Roxbury Appreciation Day for those folks who were instrumental in getting us through the pandemic."
Fireworks are being paid for with donations from private citizens, said Alford. "There's also going to be music, by (local band) Hoi Polloi. Cliff's Ice Cream likely will be there and the Horseshoe Lake Beach Snack Stand will be open," he said, adding that members of the Roxbury High School Interact Club plan to offer patriotic face tattoos for kids.
Hall said there also might also be refreshments, possibly pizza, sold by township sports teams and other youth organizations.
Those attending the event should bring beach blankets and beach chairs and be prepared to "put their feet in the sand" as they watch the fireworks, Alford said. Current plans call for the beach to open at about 6:30 p.m. and the pyrotechnics to get started shortly after it gets dark.
Hall said the full-fledged Beach Blast — which was moved in 2017 from the beach to the nearby Horseshoe Lake Fairgrounds — will likely return next summer with more activities "such as bouncy house, other vendors and things of that sort." Click here to read this coverage from TAPinto Roxbury.

NJ Human Services Extends COVID-19 Child Care Assistance Programs Through End of School Year
The state will be extending several COVID-19-related child care assistance programs for families and providers through the end of June 2021. As part of the public health emergency, the state launched the New Jersey School-Age Tuition Assistance Program to help families pay for care for their school-age child in need of child care as a result of COVID-19 remote learning schools schedules.
For families who have been approved for School-Age Tuition Assistance, payments for your child’s care will now continue through June 30, 2021. No new applications are being accepted.
If you need help paying for child care, you can apply for the state’s Child Care Subsidy Program. To give you a sense of whether you would be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy Program, the income maximum for a family of four is $52,400 annually. Use our calculator to see if you are likely to be eligible or visit our parent page to learn more about this program. If you need help finding child care, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) Agency. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov.
