Women's History Month:
Young Women Making History
Women making a difference in the world comes at all ages. Here are just a few young women making a difference and making history from Biography.com:

  • Gabby Douglas - Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas is best known as the first African American to win the individual all-around event. She also won gold medals for the U.S. in the team competitions at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.
  • Greta Thunberg - Greta Thunberg is a Swedish climate youth activist who has received worldwide recognition for her efforts to fight climate change.
  • Malala Yousafzai - As a young girl, Malala Yousafzai defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012 but survived. In 2014, she became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Anti-Bias Early Childhood Education in the works at Jefferson Elementary School
When you consider it, anti-bias education helps support children to develop truer and fuller sense of who they are and of the world as a whole.

Amy Gallagher, Roxbury Schools Director of Special Services believes, “It is so important for our students to see themselves, their families, and their cultures represented in our classrooms to reinforce each person’s value. For our students to see the beauty in the diversity of race, religion, culture, gender, food, and holiday celebrations reflected in their daily instruction allows the purity of acceptance that is inherent in our youth to grow with them into adulthood.”

So how do you accomplish such an important goal or value in preschool? First, you have to decide what the goal of diversity education is. In the Jefferson School Preschool program, we defined diversity education as a continuous approach to working with children, parents, families, and colleagues every day. The children in our program must learn about their own backgrounds, learn about people with backgrounds different from them, see themselves, their families, and their communities represented in their school, continually be exposed to activities and materials that destroy stereotypes, and learn to enjoy and appreciate and seek out differences. It’s a lofty goal for an anti-bias education program but when it becomes part of the fabric of a preschool curriculum, it is achievable. To help with this lofty goal, preschoolers at Jefferson Elementary School received new toys, books, and materials to play with. Click here to read more and see pictures of them playing with their new goodies on our website under "In the News".
Roxbury Interact Club
Hosts Field Day & Water Sale
You can buy a case of water for less than five bucks, but a better idea is to buy one for $25 from the Roxbury High School Interact Club. That’s because the club, an offshoot of the Roxbury Rotary Club, is selling the admittedly overpriced cases of water as a fundraiser for Roxbury Social Services. The plan, according to Rotarian Steve Alford, is to help the needy keep up with the rising cost of gas.

“Social Services desperately needs $25 gas cards,” Alford said. “Gas prices are going up, and it’s getting harder (for the less fortunate) to afford gas.”

Interact Club decided to help Social Services by selling cases of water supplied by the Rotary Club. The goal is to raise $1,500 at the March 27 sale and buy gas gift cards that will be given to Social Services.

The water sale is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Eyland Avenue in Succasunna. Wanting to make the fundraiser more exciting, the Interact Club members decided to turn the water sale into a fun event for kids: A “field day” mini-carnival that will have games-of-chance and refreshments for sale. LAST CALL to see Godspell this Spring
Roxbury High School is proud to present its 2021 Spring Musical production of Godspell, conceived by John-Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen Schwartz. This immensely successful rock opera was first produced on Broadway in 1971, where it broke new ground in its stage treatment of the historical Jesus Christ. Based on the Gospel according to St Matthew, it deals with the last days of Jesus, and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables. And yet it is something more - a spiritual experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of the family of man. The cast are ordinary people, improvising scenery and costumes, and using many well-known theatrical devices, pantomime, vaudeville and varied musical styles to interpret one of humanity's greatest stories.

Stream the show this weekend! These are scheduled streams and you must purchase an access code for the specific stream that you want to watch. Videos will be streaming on March 26 (7pm), March 27 (7pm), and March 28th (2pm). Click here to purchase your access code! We hope you are able to join us for this theatrical event!

Gaels Going Green
Did you know...

The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.

To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.
KES Student Spotlight: Victoria's Tips, Tricks, and Facts to Help Save our Planet by Recycling
As our minds continue to be filled with thoughts and uncertainties about the pandemic. Victoria Phelan Fonseca, a 4th-grade student at Kennedy School in Mrs. Leister's class, has bigger concerns about the lasting effects of pollution, especially plastics filling our landfills, environments, and oceans. Plastics are destroying our oceans and the habitats that millions of sea animals call home. Each week Victoria will be giving tips, tricks, and facts to all Roxbury families so we can help slow this effort and continue to raise awareness on this important crisis.

This week's tips, tricks, and facts is:
If you haven’t consumed enough chocolate to make a fist-sized ball of foil, you can place the foil pieces into an aluminum drink can to contain them before placing it in your recycling bin.

Lake Hopatcong Foundation:
Help us with a little Spring Cleaning
When debris—plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, etc.—is tossed on the ground, it can get washed into storm drains and end up in our waterways. In addition to being unsightly, litter can harm aquatic life and decrease oxygen levels in the water when it decays. If we each take some time to clean up our communities, we can make a BIG difference. If you're itching to get a little spring cleaning done, below are two cleanups that will get you outside in the spring weather and protect our watershed at the same time. Happy spring cleaning!

Musconetcong Watershed Association's Annual River Cleanup
Saturday, April 17, 2021 beginning at 9:00 am
Each spring, the Musconetcong Watershed Association organizes a river cleanup that draws hundreds of volunteers to remove trash at various locations along the Musconetcong River, from Lake Hopatcong to the Delaware River confluence. The Lake Hopatcong Foundation is pleased to assist this effort each year by coordinating the Hopatcong State Park portion of the cleanup. Hopatcong State Park is location #1 on the river cleanup map and you can join us for this cleanup by registering HEREGloves and trash bags will be provided. Masks will be required when in groups.

LHF Adopt-A-Spot Community Cleanup
Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 8:30 - 10 am
We hope you will join us to pick up roadside debris along Mt. Arlington Boulevard in support of Roxbury’s Adopt-A-Road Program and in celebration of Earth Week. In just a quick 90 minutes, we usually make a huge difference! No registration is necessary for this event, simply meet us on Mt. Arlington Boulevard in front of the Nixon School (275 Mt Arlington Blvd., Landing) at 8:30 am. Please park your vehicles along the road in front of the school. Gloves, trash bags, and vests will be provided. Masks will be required when in groups. Click here to read about these events from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.
School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.

Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.

We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.

Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

NJ Human Services Extends COVID-19 Child Care Assistance Programs Through End of School Year

The state will be extending several COVID-19-related child care assistance programs for families and providers through the end of June 2021. As part of the public health emergency, the state launched the New Jersey School-Age Tuition Assistance Program to help families pay for care for their school-age child in need of child care as a result of COVID-19 remote learning schools schedules.

For families who have been approved for School-Age Tuition Assistance, payments for your child’s care will now continue through June 30, 2021. No new applications are being accepted.

If you need help paying for child care, you can apply for the state’s Child Care Subsidy Program. To give you a sense of whether you would be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy Program, the income maximum for a family of four is $52,400 annually. Use our calculator to see if you are likely to be eligible or visit our parent page to learn more about this program. If you need help finding child care, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) Agency. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov.
