Superintendent Communications: Phase II Reopening - Nov 11
Dear Roxbury Community:
Phase II of our re-opening plan will occur on Monday, November 16th. I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts with you and hopefully, create a stronger level of understanding and assurance on why it is appropriate for us to move forward.
We never expected to get through this fall without experiencing some positive COVID cases. We are human and susceptible to illnesses. Nonetheless, we took every precaution possible to minimize illnesses and overall, it has worked. In collaboration with our local health officials, we have learned how to properly handle probable/positive COVID cases and have experienced ZERO transmission within our schools. Even our isolation rooms have been minimally used throughout the first few months of this school year. This is something we can and should celebrate together because it is through our collective efforts that it has come to pass.
This is also the appropriate time to extend sincere appreciation and gratitude to our school nurses and our local health officials for their guidance, research, and commitment to ensuring that we keep our community healthy. Our school administration has also played a significant role in efficiently and effectively conducting contact tracing, notifying school communities and requiring quarantining as appropriate and necessary.
Communication with public health officials continues to be ongoing. Our public health officials have been thorough, accessible, thoughtful and consistent. Decisions have been made based on CDC guidelines, and we have been abundantly cautious. I am confident in the decisions that we have made together. Every case has been tracked. We have not had more than three active cases that have required quarantining classrooms at a single time throughout the entire district. Think about those numbers. That means with all of our students, teachers, administration, and staff, only a maximum of three cases have existed that have required us to quarantine classrooms at any single moment throughout the district. Currently, we have one “active” case at the HS and one “active” case at an elementary building that have required classroom quarantines. Both of these cases will be closed by the weekend.
Overall, Roxbury has been healthy and that is due in no small part to the cooperation of our community. We continue to notify the impacted school community when an active case requires us to take necessary precautions. However, the case does not exist permanently. After 14 days, it is closed and people return to work and school. Only yesterday did we experience a small increase in close contact quarantines of a few individuals, but none that have required us to quarantine classrooms.
We truly believe, and our health officials would concur, that the steps we have taken have been successful in protecting the health and safety of our staff and students within our buildings. We were extremely cautious re-opening our schools. Knowing more about the virus, understanding the preventative steps, experiencing zero transmissions within our schools, and continued practice of appropriate quarantining protocols all indicate that we are prepared to move into the next phase. We will continue to guard the health and safety of our staff and students, but we will not remain stagnant. We are ready to move to Phase II. If the need arises for us to go virtual in the future, we will be prepared for that transition.
Again, we have had zero transmissions within the setting of our schools. In addition, we have learned that responsible behavior, such as staying home when ill and proper hygiene as well as isolation and quarantining effectively prevents transmission. Therefore, we ask for your partnership in continuing to remain vigilant and responsible.
With that in mind, I respectfully ask that you share in the commitment to practice thoughtful gatherings this upcoming Thanksgiving. Practice increased handwashing, wear masks, and social distance. While social interaction keeps us emotionally healthy, we must balance that need with our vigilance and responsibility.
I wish you all the best this Thanksgiving. May you experience joy, peace, and comfort.
Yours in Education,
Loretta L. Radulic, Superintendent of Schools

Nixon School Holds Mock Election for a Good Cause
In an election year, students at Nixon Elementary School learned the importance of a voting. The school held a building-wide mock election while learning about the voting process and how important casting their votes can be. Rather than voting for the candidates, Nixon teacher Rebecca Freeborn organized the mock election where the students voted for a charity and a donation would be made to the winning charity on behalf of the school.
“As a class, we came up with causes that we cared about and narrowed it down into categories such as health, poverty, and helping animals and the environment. With that, we researched organizations that helped these causes. We ended up choosing Oceana, Toys for Tots, and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.” Click here to read more about this mock election along with seeing one of the campaign videos and the students campaign posters on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury High School presents
A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play
Due to the ongoing pandemic, Roxbury High School’s fall drama production of A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play by Philip Grecian won’t be available for live performances. But as with all things in the theater, the show must go on and in life, we need to find those silver linings!
This year’s silver lining is that patrons don’t just get to see the show once but can view it multiple times all Thanksgiving Weekend from November 26-29th.
Those interested in viewing the performance need to complete a Google Form to be sent video access information from the RHS Drama Director, Mr. Patrick Hachey.
Roxbury High School’s Performing Arts Department is reliant on ticket sales to fund their productions and unfortunately, due to the pandemic, ticket sales for live performances are unavailable. If viewers are interested in pledging a donation to the Roxbury High School Performing Arts department, they can do so via the Google form.

Still Looking for a Win, Roxbury Football Falls to Montville
Chalk it up to character building: The Roxbury High School football team on Friday continued its winless season with a blowout defeat to Montville. The 0-6 Gaels fell behind early in the game, a contest that saw Mustangs quarterback Blaine Franc complete a 55-yard pass to Anthony Hurley for a touchdown. After another Montville touchdown brought the score to 14-0, Roxbury found itself in close range but the Mustangs brought the tally to 21-0 with a pick-6. The trouble for Roxbury continued in the second half as Montville again found the end-zone to make the score 34-0. But the Gaels showed toughness; a long kick return by sophomore Bleon Meta and a subsequent Roxbury touchdown got the team on the board 34-7. Unfortunately for Roxbury, that was the extent of the scoring for the Gaels. The 3-3 Mustangs tacked-on one more to finish the game with a score of 41-7. The Gaels next play Nov. 14 in a 1 p.m. away game against Morristown. Click here to read this coverage from TAPinto Roxbury. Click here to read additional game coverage from NJ.com.
NJ high school football: Schedule, matchups for Weeks 7 and 8 across New Jersey
On Thursday, the NJSIAA released football schedules for every team in the state for Weeks 7 and 8. In most cases, teams found out who they will play each week. In other cases, the NJSIAA created four-team pods in which the Week 7 winners will play each other in Week 8, and Week 7 losers will play each other in Week 8. The matchups and pods were created with both competitive balance and geography in mind, and in some cases are being used to make up games that were postponed during the regular season. Keep in mind that some teams are sidelined through Week 7 due to COVID concerns, but plan to return in Week 8. The schedule is subject to change. Click here for all of the pods and Week 7 and 8 matchups, broken down by conference per NorthJersey.com. This file will be updated as game dates and times are announced.

Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.
To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.

School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

Join the Battle, Beat the Bug
Eliminate the Spotted Lanternfly
The colder weather will kill off any adult lanternflies bugging New Jersey right now, but come spring, the destructive pest is predicted to continue its spread throughout the state.
Adult spotted lanternfly begins laying egg masses in early to mid-September. An adult female can lay three egg masses containing 30 to 50 eggs each that hatch in the spring. The insect cannot survive the winter, but its egg masses do, so destroying them is one way to help stop the spread. The gray egg masses can be scraped off, double bagged and thrown away or placed into alcohol, bleach or hand sanitizer to kill them.
The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that can feed on about 70 different types of trees and plants. Indigenous to China, Taiwan and Vietnam, the planthopper pest arrived in the U.S. in Berks County, Pennsylvania, on a shipment from China in 2014. It has steadily advanced ever since, and 26 counties in Pennsylvania are currently under quarantine. Right now, the highest populations persist in the counties closer to Pennsylvania, where the spotted lanternfly was detected in 2014.
If you are in one of the quarantined counties of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Salem, Somerset or Warren, you do not need to contact the New Jersey Department of Agriculture about Spottted Lanternfly sightings. Spotted Lanternfly locations in unquarantined counties in New Jersey can be reported to the Department by emailing slf-plantindustry@ag.nj.gov or by calling 609-406-6943.
The Department appreciates residents reporting the addresses of Spotted Lanternfly sightings and assisting us in keeping this pest from spreading. While we will not return confirmation calls and emails at this time, the information provided to us is important in our mission against the Spotted Lanternfly. If you are able to eliminate the Spotted Lanternfly, please do so. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

Game On: Roxbury Launches Holiday Decorating Contest
A few questions for the holiday decoration fanatics of Roxbury: Do you have what it takes to be a master of the festive front yard? Will you risk the frustration of one bad bulb killing a string of 100 tiny lights? Can you rationalize the jaw-dropping, post holidays JCP&L bill? If so, you have about a month to do what it takes to become a winner in the 2020 Roxbury Recreation Holiday Home Decorating Contest.
The contest is the township’s effort to help Roxbury residents end a depressing, COVID-tinged year with a little cheer and good-natured competition, said Recreation Department Program Director Ryan Williams. “This contest is a salute to those who brave the elements, meticulously stringing up lights for everyone to enjoy,” Williams wrote on the department’s Facebook page. It’s on that page that all submitted entries will be displayed. Winners, to be announced Dec. 22, will be based on the number of “likes” they receive. National Wreaths Across America Day - Dec 19
The Ferro Monte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in support of the Wreaths Across America at First Presbyterian, United Methodist, and Flanders-Hillside cemeteries in Succasunna are working hard to ensure that the 617 US Service Veterans buried at these cemeteries will indeed be honored again this year with the placement of fresh balsam wreaths as part of National Wreaths Across America Day 2020.
This year the ceremonies that are held across the country at more than 2,200 participating locations will be different as the national nonprofit makes every effort to meet CDC recommended safety guidelines while also adhering to state, local, and cemetery safety measures being implemented due to COVID-19.
At First Presbyterian, United Methodist and Flanders-Hillside cemeteries in Succasunna the following modifications have been made to maintain a safe and successful event.
- Wreath laying will be done by appointment only on Fri., Dec. 18 and Sat., Dec 19
- The Remembrance Ceremony will be virtual
- Details on appointment scheduling and the virtual ceremony will be announced shortly
National Wreaths Across America Day is a free, non-political event that is usually open to all people. However, this year each individual location will adhere to all local and state safety guidelines and rules set forth by the participating cemetery locations at which Wreaths Across America is a guest.
We encourage all those interested in participating in this year’s wreath placement to please register as a volunteer so that you can be kept up-to-date on the details for the day as they occur. You can register to volunteer at RoxburyWAA.org or email FerroMonteDAR@gmail.com. Click here to view more information on this in our Virtual Backpack.
