October is the month to acknowledge a drug free life as well as to show kindness and compassion to others. October 5-11th is designated as the “Week of Respect,” October 19-23rd is “School Violence Awareness Week,” while October 26-30th is “Red Ribbon Week.” This month is devoted to creating a healthy, drug and violence free America.
This year the Roxbury School District will acknowledge this important month with a district wide theme of “Be the Reason Someone Smiles Today.” The students in the district will be given the opportunity to participate in daily October challenges that show their commitment to kindness, respect and healthy choices. Check with your child's school for more information and let's all try to spread a little kindness!

Superintendent Communications: Phase II Reopening
Dear Roxbury Families:
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
~Martin Luther King, Jr.
We are not flying yet, but we are striving to move forward. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I share our plan to move forward to Phase II on November 16th. A quick word of caution, this is 2020 and anything can happen, so even with our preparations underway, we need to continue to monitor the health and wellness of our district. Therefore, on November 11th, I will send out a Honeywell confirming our transition to Phase II.
In making the decision to move to Phase II, we have continued to monitor the health and wellness of our district. While three of our seven schools experienced events that required quarantining of classes, there has been NO transmission of the Coronavirus in our schools. I sincerely believe that is due to the precautions that the district has taken coupled with the responsibility practiced by the community. It will be imperative that we remain vigilant, responsible and work together as we expand on-site instruction.
Our Phase II Hybrid is as follows:
- Kindergarten to Grade 8 schedules will run full capacity, 4-hour days. Virtual Mondays will continue at this time. There will no longer be Blue/Gold Cohorts.
- Roxbury High School will run on a 50% capacity, full-days which will include lunch and live streaming on the days where students are not on site.
- Virtual Mondays will continue throughout December with January 4th serving as an in-person instructional day. At that time and with the continuation of the district’s health, we will eliminate virtual Mondays.
Parent Input Requested: This is also the time for parents to weigh in and determine if their child(ren) will remain learning in their current format or if they would like to change to either an expanded in-person hybrid or fully virtual format. Only if you are planning on changing the status of your child(ren), complete the new form available in the Parent Portal in Genesis by no later than Wednesday, October 21st. If a communication is not received by that date, children will maintain their current status until the end of the second marking period, January 29th. It is also important to note that the number of requests may result in students having a change made to schedules and/or teacher assignments. Principals will be communicating the specific details for their buildings.
Adjustments will also need to be made to transportation schedules as well which may result in an increased number of students on a bus. We will continue to have students wear masks on the buses, run the air purifiers, and keep the windows open. If you choose to transport your child, please inform the Transportation Department.
First Week of November: Due to maintaining our virtual Monday schedule as well as having to close schools for in-person instruction on Election Day as mandated by Governor Murphy, and the NJEA Convention of that week, we will run November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as fully virtual instructional days.
While flexibility and responsibility have been the keys to our success thus far, we also need to highlight appreciation in our current experience. Appreciation that we are beginning our trek back to a typical and traditional school day. Appreciation for the cooperation of our community. And appreciation for the hard work of a dedicated staff. We will get there, safely and assuredly.
Wishing you all continued health as we move into the winter months and continue to keep moving forward.
Sincerely,
Loretta L. Radulic, Superintendent of Schools

Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.
To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.

Help us fill in our Community Asset Map
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can tribute.

Roxbury Clean Community Clean Up Day - Oct 24
After postponing last spring’s Roxbury Community Clean Up Day due to COVID-19, we are encouraging residents to help beautify our community on Saturday, October 24, 2020 beginning at 9:00 a.m., commencing at the DPW office located at 96 N. Dell Avenue, Kenvil, NJ (locations will be assigned). “Under the reign of COVID-19 our voluntary spring cleanup was cancelled so litter has been accumulating and growing undisturbed throughout town and it’s starting to show” commented Kellie Ann Keyes, Clean Communities Coordinator
Our cleanup day is socially-distanced, self-guided volunteer opportunity for individuals, residents, businesses and groups to work together to help clean up parks, trails, woodlands, roadsides, neighborhoods and waterways. The event is a great way to spend time outdoors, to pick up litter before it is covered with leaves and snow, stopping the debris from ending up in storm drains and waterways.
The day will start at 9:00 a.m. with *assignments and instructions. Assignments are given according to age and safety. Bags, gloves, vests, litter grabbers (while supplies last) and water to refill your re-useable water bottle will be provided. A free face covering will be offered (while supplies last). Most cleanups run for approximately two hours. *Travel may be necessary for certain locations assigned. Volunteers must sign a waiver to participate. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for this event! Volunteer for Community Service hours! To register, email keyesk@roxburynj.us or call 973-448-2053 for additional information. Mini-grants available for nonprofit organizations (first come, first serve basis). Pre-registration is required. Suggested areas for litter removal are also welcome.

Roxbury Environmental Commission warns of Spotted Lanternfly dangers
It's another tree ravaging gift from Asia, and local officials say it has been spotted in the township. It's the Spotted Lanternfly, and the township's Environmental Commission is advising residents to be wary.
"The spotted Lanternfly has been seen in some sections in Roxbury. The Roxbury Environmental Commission wants to make residents aware of its presence in the Township and directions on how to report," Environmental Commission Chair Jacqueline Vitiello said in an e-mail on Oct. 4.
"The Spotted Lanternfly lays its eggs in the fall, so now is a good time for residents to be aware and take steps to prevent its spread," she said. According to Wikipedia, the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a plant hopper that is indigenous to parts of northern China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and has spread invasively to Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Although it has two pairs of wings, it jumps more than it flies. Its host plants include grapes, stone fruits, and Malus species, although its preferred host is Ailanthus altissima (Chinese sumac or tree of heaven).
According to Vitiello, if a resident spots a Spotted Lanternfly, they should take a picture with a GPS function on on the Smartphone or camera of any life stage, including egg masses. Those pictures should be submitted to SLF-plantindustry@ag.nj.gov. Specimens of any life stage can be turned in to the NJ Department of Agriculture’s lab for verification. Egg masses should be scrapped off trees and double bagged and thrown away. If a picture can't be taken, call the NJ Spotted Lanternfly Hotline at 1-833-223-2840 (BADBUG0). Click here for more detailed information with pictures and to learn how to set traps. Click here to read more about these bad bugs from the Roxbury Register.

Coming to Roxbury on Election Day 2020: Polling Sites Without Voting Machines
Roxbury will have two polling locations on Election Day, but voting machines won't be there. The machines are among the many things erased from normal life in 2020 due to fear of spreading the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. The Election Day polling places-one at Roxbury Town Hall on Route 46 in Ledgewood and another at the Roxbury Senior Center at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna - will be open Election Day but only for dropping off completed ballots, said Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo.
He said all registered voters should receive those ballots by mail no later than Oct. 5. Voters do not have to wait until Election Day to submit their ballots and officials are encouraging voters to vote early. "Ballots may be returned by U.S. mail or dropped at the 10 Morris County ballot boxes located throughout the county, DeFillippo said. One of those 10 boxes will be situated in Roxbury Town Hall.
"While we encourage all voters to either return their ballot by U.S. mail or a drop-off box, residents who desire to vote in person will receive a post card that indicates their polling location (either Town Hall or the Senior Center), said the mayor.
The polling location for those who want to wait until Election Day to cast their ballots will be based on a voter's ward and district. All voters in Roxbury Ward 1 are assigned the polling place at Town Hall, as are voters in Ward 3 Districts 1 and 6.
All other voters are assigned to the Senior Center polling site, according to the county. The two sites will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day for ballot drop-off. Panel of Roxbury Women
to Share Personal Stories - Oct 21
A panel of mostly Roxbury-based women will share personal stories of leadership, growth and inspiration in “How She Leads,” a virtual program on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
One-hundred years ago, women in our country celebrated their newly approved right to vote, which, for many, was the first step in challenging convention and being able to participate equally in opportunities reserved for men. Today, a century later, women celebrate personal victories of equality and success and can also cite challenges along their paths.
“How She Leads” is hosted by the Roxbury Public Library in conjunction with Unity in Community and Roxbury Coalition for Social Change as part of its “Common Grounds” series. Through workshops and panels, Common Grounds is designed to help the community share differences of opinions and understand different points of view. By exploring differences through civil conversations, we can promote a common level of human understanding and compassion on different topics.
