October is the month to acknowledge a drug free life as well as to show kindness and compassion to others. October 5-11th is designated as the “Week of Respect,” October 19-23rd is “School Violence Awareness Week,” while October 26-30th is “Red Ribbon Week.” This month is devoted to creating a healthy, drug and violence free America.
This year the Roxbury School District will acknowledge this important month with a district wide theme of “Be the Reason Someone Smiles Today.” The students in the district will be given the opportunity to participate in daily October challenges that show their commitment to kindness, respect and healthy choices. Check with your child's school for more information and let's all try to spread a little kindness!

Roxbury SAIL Parent Academies Offer Tech Help
In a year requiring so much technology, the latest Student Academic Intervention and Learning (SAIL) Parent Academies couldn’t be more appropriate for students and families at Franklin and Nixon Elementary Schools. The “Tech Help” nights were afforded to families at these two schools through Title I funding which is based on the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program.
This first SAIL Parent Academy, coordinated by Kelly Freund took place this week at the individual schools and covered all things technology-related. Families were encouraged to share their technology questions and problems prior to their respective evenings. Troubleshooting topics included: getting to know your Chromebook, Google Classroom, Class DoJo, managing ClassLink, how to upload and share documents, meeting notifications, and more.
In an effort to maintain social distancing guidelines due to COVID, families made individual half-hour appointments with one of the teachers and they met outside at the school in masks to go over their technology questions. Families and teachers met with their Chromebooks open and clicked away as they walked through the various steps on how to access, submit, or troubleshoot their technology problems.
As with all of our parent academics, families received dinner, this time in a “Grab & Go” style-meal and a take away for the students that included a free wireless mouse and a Roxbury Strong mousepad.
Click the video link below to see a brief slideshow of pictures from those evenings. Click here to read more about this event on our website under "In the News".

Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.
To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.
Take a quick look at the policies that got this all started:

Help us fill in our Community Asset Map
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can tribute.

Roxbury Clean Community Clean Up Day - Oct 24
After postponing last spring’s Roxbury Community Clean Up Day due to COVID-19, we are encouraging residents to help beautify our community on Saturday, October 24, 2020 beginning at 9:00 a.m., commencing at the DPW office located at 96 N. Dell Avenue, Kenvil, NJ (locations will be assigned). “Under the reign of COVID-19 our voluntary spring cleanup was cancelled so litter has been accumulating and growing undisturbed throughout town and it’s starting to show” commented Kellie Ann Keyes, Clean Communities Coordinator
Our cleanup day is socially-distanced, self-guided volunteer opportunity for individuals, residents, businesses and groups to work together to help clean up parks, trails, woodlands, roadsides, neighborhoods and waterways. The event is a great way to spend time outdoors, to pick up litter before it is covered with leaves and snow, stopping the debris from ending up in storm drains and waterways.
The day will start at 9:00 a.m. with *assignments and instructions. Assignments are given according to age and safety. Bags, gloves, vests, litter grabbers (while supplies last) and water to refill your re-useable water bottle will be provided. A free face covering will be offered (while supplies last). Most cleanups run for approximately two hours. *Travel may be necessary for certain locations assigned. Volunteers must sign a waiver to participate. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for this event! Volunteer for Community Service hours! To register, email keyesk@roxburynj.us or call 973-448-2053 for additional information. Mini-grants available for nonprofit organizations (first come, first serve basis). Pre-registration is required. Suggested areas for litter removal are also welcome.

Roxbury Environmental Commission warns of Spotted Lanternfly dangers
It's another tree ravaging gift from Asia, and local officials say it has been spotted in the township. It's the Spotted Lanternfly, and the township's Environmental Commission is advising residents to be wary.
"The spotted Lanternfly has been seen in some sections in Roxbury. The Roxbury Environmental Commission wants to make residents aware of its presence in the Township and directions on how to report," Environmental Commission Chair Jacqueline Vitiello said in an e-mail on Oct. 4.
"The Spotted Lanternfly lays its eggs in the fall, so now is a good time for residents to be aware and take steps to prevent its spread," she said. According to Wikipedia, the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a plant hopper that is indigenous to parts of northern China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and has spread invasively to Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Although it has two pairs of wings, it jumps more than it flies. Its host plants include grapes, stone fruits, and Malus species, although its preferred host is Ailanthus altissima (Chinese sumac or tree of heaven).
According to Vitiello, if a resident spots a Spotted Lanternfly, they should take a picture with a GPS function on on the Smartphone or camera of any life stage, including egg masses. Those pictures should be submitted to SLF-plantindustry@ag.nj.gov. Specimens of any life stage can be turned in to the NJ Department of Agriculture’s lab for verification. Egg masses should be scrapped off trees and double bagged and thrown away. If a picture can't be taken, call the NJ Spotted Lanternfly Hotline at 1-833-223-2840 (BADBUG0). Click here for more detailed information with pictures and to learn how to set traps. Click here to read more about these bad bugs from the Roxbury Register.

Coming to Roxbury on Election Day 2020: Polling Sites Without Voting Machines
Roxbury will have two polling locations on Election Day, but voting machines won't be there. The machines are among the many things erased from normal life in 2020 due to fear of spreading the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. The Election Day polling places-one at Roxbury Town Hall on Route 46 in Ledgewood and another at the Roxbury Senior Center at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna - will be open Election Day but only for dropping off completed ballots, said Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo.
He said all registered voters should receive those ballots by mail no later than Oct. 5. Voters do not have to wait until Election Day to submit their ballots and officials are encouraging voters to vote early. "Ballots may be returned by U.S. mail or dropped at the 10 Morris County ballot boxes located throughout the county, DeFillippo said. One of those 10 boxes will be situated in Roxbury Town Hall.
"While we encourage all voters to either return their ballot by U.S. mail or a drop-off box, residents who desire to vote in person will receive a post card that indicates their polling location (either Town Hall or the Senior Center), said the mayor.
The polling location for those who want to wait until Election Day to cast their ballots will be based on a voter's ward and district. All voters in Roxbury Ward 1 are assigned the polling place at Town Hall, as are voters in Ward 3 Districts 1 and 6.
All other voters are assigned to the Senior Center polling site, according to the county. The two sites will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day for ballot drop-off. New Jersey families struggling to afford child care during remote learning can now apply for state grants under a new $150 million state program. The Department of Human Services said Monday that it had begun taking applications for its COVID-19 child care tuition assistance program. Families with incomes up to $75,000 that need either full or part-time child care due to their child's remote learning schedule are eligible to apply.
Tuition assistance will be available through Dec. 30 for eligible residents with children 5 to 13 years old. Applicants must show proof of income and a notice or announcement from their child's school of a remote learning schedule. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov. National Wreaths Across America Day - Dec 19
The Ferro Monte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in support of the Wreaths Across America at First Presbyterian, United Methodist, and Flanders-Hillside cemeteries in Succasunna are working hard to ensure that the 617 US Service Veterans buried at these cemeteries will indeed be honored again this year with the placement of fresh balsam wreaths as part of National Wreaths Across America Day 2020.
This year the ceremonies that are held across the country at more than 2,200 participating locations will be different as the national nonprofit makes every effort to meet CDC recommended safety guidelines while also adhering to state, local, and cemetery safety measures being implemented due to COVID-19.
At First Presbyterian, United Methodist and Flanders-Hillside cemeteries in Succasunna the following modifications have been made to maintain a safe and successful event.
- Wreath laying will be done by appointment only on Fri., Dec. 18 and Sat., Dec 19
- The Remembrance Ceremony will be virtual
- Details on appointment scheduling and the virtual ceremony will be announced shortly
National Wreaths Across America Day is a free, non-political event that is usually open to all people. However, this year each individual location will adhere to all local and state safety guidelines and rules set forth by the participating cemetery locations at which Wreaths Across America is a guest.
We encourage all those interested in participating in this year’s wreath placement to please register as a volunteer so that you can be kept up-to-date on the details for the day as they occur. You can register to volunteer at RoxburyWAA.org or email FerroMonteDAR@gmail.com. Click here to view more information on this in our Virtual Backpack.
