Roxbury HS Receives Community Grant
from Local Walmart
Roxbury High School is the proud recipient of a Walmart Community Grant to help promote student achievement and recognition within the walls of Roxbury High School. Grant monies will be used to purchase more equipment and materials that would publicize and celebrate our students’ achievements in academics, athletics, community, music, and more.
“The RHS administration has been discussing with teachers, advisors, and student leaders, different ways to provide opportunities for events that will promote school spirit and a strong school community. This is particularly challenging during these times where the pandemic has restricted the overall school experience. It will be great to have these funds to, directly and indirectly, benefit our students and the Roxbury community," said RHS Assistant Principal Jon Deeb.
RHS student leaders, senior Justin Berge (Student Council President) and junior Chloe Hernandez (Junior Class Officer) along with Assistant Principal Mr. Deeb helped us say thanks earlier this week! Click here to read more about this grant on our website under "In the News".

The project officially kicked off on October 5, 2020 as part of the celebration of World Habitat Day. Jefferson Preschoolers Learn About Fire Safety
October is Fire Prevention Month and since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has celebrated and recognized the second week of October as Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
Some of Roxbury’s youngest learners in Patti Klein’s preschool class at Jefferson Elementary School took part in this year’s Fire Prevention Week. The children made special dalmatian hats and pretended to be firemen and learned how to keep safe and stay away from things that are hot and dangerous. They also practiced how to stop, drop, and roll.
The goal of Fire Prevention Month is to raise fire safety awareness while educating families, students, and communities. This year’s NFPA campaign for Fire Safety Month is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen”. Click here for fire safety tips and information for all age levels. Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.
To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.

Help us fill in our Community Asset Map
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can tribute.
A Big Turnout for Roxbury Paper Shredding Event
The Sept. 26 paper shredding event hosted by Roxbury Township saw more participation than any other in the past four years, said township Recycling Coordinator Kellie Ann Keyes. She said about 140 cars showed up at the Annual Shredding Day, which took place at the township Department of Public Works site in Kenvil.
She said more than 3,100 pounds of paper was shredded at the event. All will be taken to a special facility for processing, said Keyes, explaining that the paper is "milled and recycled as everyday paper products."
The township has scheduled more paper shredding events for May 15, 2021 and Sept. 18 2021. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Roxbury Clean Community Clean Up Day - Oct 24
After postponing last spring’s Roxbury Community Clean Up Day due to COVID-19, we are encouraging residents to help beautify our community on Saturday, October 24, 2020 beginning at 9:00 a.m., commencing at the DPW office located at 96 N. Dell Avenue, Kenvil, NJ (locations will be assigned). “Under the reign of COVID-19 our voluntary spring cleanup was cancelled so litter has been accumulating and growing undisturbed throughout town and it’s starting to show” commented Kellie Ann Keyes, Clean Communities Coordinator
Our cleanup day is socially-distanced, self-guided volunteer opportunity for individuals, residents, businesses and groups to work together to help clean up parks, trails, woodlands, roadsides, neighborhoods and waterways. The event is a great way to spend time outdoors, to pick up litter before it is covered with leaves and snow, stopping the debris from ending up in storm drains and waterways.
The day will start at 9:00 a.m. with *assignments and instructions. Assignments are given according to age and safety. Bags, gloves, vests, litter grabbers (while supplies last) and water to refill your re-useable water bottle will be provided. A free face covering will be offered (while supplies last). Most cleanups run for approximately two hours. *Travel may be necessary for certain locations assigned. Volunteers must sign a waiver to participate. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for this event! Volunteer for Community Service hours! To register, email keyesk@roxburynj.us or call 973-448-2053 for additional information. Mini-grants available for nonprofit organizations (first come, first serve basis). Pre-registration is required. Suggested areas for litter removal are also welcome.

Roxbury Environmental Commission warns of Spotted Lanternfly dangers
It's another tree ravaging gift from Asia, and local officials say it has been spotted in the township. It's the Spotted Lanternfly, and the township's Environmental Commission is advising residents to be wary.
"The spotted Lanternfly has been seen in some sections in Roxbury. The Roxbury Environmental Commission wants to make residents aware of its presence in the Township and directions on how to report," Environmental Commission Chair Jacqueline Vitiello said in an e-mail on Oct. 4.
"The Spotted Lanternfly lays its eggs in the fall, so now is a good time for residents to be aware and take steps to prevent its spread," she said. According to Wikipedia, the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a plant hopper that is indigenous to parts of northern China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and has spread invasively to Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Although it has two pairs of wings, it jumps more than it flies. Its host plants include grapes, stone fruits, and Malus species, although its preferred host is Ailanthus altissima (Chinese sumac or tree of heaven).
According to Vitiello, if a resident spots a Spotted Lanternfly, they should take a picture with a GPS function on on the Smartphone or camera of any life stage, including egg masses. Those pictures should be submitted to SLF-plantindustry@ag.nj.gov. Specimens of any life stage can be turned in to the NJ Department of Agriculture’s lab for verification. Egg masses should be scrapped off trees and double bagged and thrown away. If a picture can't be taken, call the NJ Spotted Lanternfly Hotline at 1-833-223-2840 (BADBUG0). Click here for more detailed information with pictures and to learn how to set traps. Click here to read more about these bad bugs from the Roxbury Register.

Coming to Roxbury on Election Day 2020: Polling Sites Without Voting Machines
Roxbury will have two polling locations on Election Day, but voting machines won't be there. The machines are among the many things erased from normal life in 2020 due to fear of spreading the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. The Election Day polling places-one at Roxbury Town Hall on Route 46 in Ledgewood and another at the Roxbury Senior Center at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna - will be open Election Day but only for dropping off completed ballots, said Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo.
He said all registered voters should receive those ballots by mail no later than Oct. 5. Voters do not have to wait until Election Day to submit their ballots and officials are encouraging voters to vote early. "Ballots may be returned by U.S. mail or dropped at the 10 Morris County ballot boxes located throughout the county, DeFillippo said. One of those 10 boxes will be situated in Roxbury Town Hall.
"While we encourage all voters to either return their ballot by U.S. mail or a drop-off box, residents who desire to vote in person will receive a post card that indicates their polling location (either Town Hall or the Senior Center), said the mayor.
The polling location for those who want to wait until Election Day to cast their ballots will be based on a voter's ward and district. All voters in Roxbury Ward 1 are assigned the polling place at Town Hall, as are voters in Ward 3 Districts 1 and 6.
All other voters are assigned to the Senior Center polling site, according to the county. The two sites will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day for ballot drop-off.
