State of the Program: Old-school Roxbury trying to recreate past success
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Roxbury football coach Cosmo Lorusso is going old-school. He broke his roster down into pods of 10, who cycled through practice in 90-minute segments on alternate days. Seniors guided freshmen, and sophomores and juniors held each other accountable, based solely on last name rather than the depth chart.
There was no football, no pads. Instead, the Gaels did body-weight exercises: pushups, crunches and squats. After five weeks, Roxbury shortened the physical component of practice and added the ball. "Are the schemes going to be as complex as in the past? No," said Lorusso, who is in his 33rd year teaching high school English and coaching. "Will we be in shape and ready to play? Yes, because we did the physical component. Were we in the weight room? No, but we did natural things."
The Group IV Gaels roster is down to only 40 upperclassmen - 10 seniors - and 26 freshmen. Lorusso said senior running back/outside linebacker Lucas Spitzer, a three-year starter, is "clearly the leader of this team. This is Lucas' team. The players recognize him as a leader." Quarterback Nick Mastrandrea is back for his second year under center. Safety Jacob Fichter, linemen Julian Orama and Michael Hills, end Bleon Meta and tackle Garrett Sloan also return. Lorusso also highlighted senior inside linebackers Marc Anthony Scalera and Charles Nino, who are both back from injury.
"Sport is being used to heal these kids, who are hurting from a very strange year," Lorusso said. "We want to go out and enjoy the game of football, because we almost didn't have it." Click here to read more of this story from the Daily Record.

Coming to Roxbury on Election Day 2020: Polling Sites Without Voting Machines
Roxbury will have two polling locations on Election Day, but voting machines won't be there. The machines are among the many things erased from normal life in 2020 due to fear of spreading the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. The Election Day polling places-one at Roxbury Town Hall on Route 46 in Ledgewood and another at the Roxbury Senior Center at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna - will be open Election Day but only for dropping off completed ballots, said Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo.
He said all registered voters should receive those ballots by mail no later than Oct. 5. Voters do not have to wait until Election Day to submit their ballots and officials are encouraging voters to vote early. "Ballots may be returned by U.S. mail or dropped at the 10 Morris County ballot boxes located throughout the county, DeFillippo said. One of those 10 boxes will be situated in Roxbury Town Hall.
"While we encourage all voters to either return their ballot by U.S. mail or a drop-off box, residents who desire to vote in person will receive a post card that indicates their polling location (either Town Hall or the Senior Center), said the mayor.
The polling location for those who want to wait until Election Day to cast their ballots will be based on a voter's ward and district. All voters in Roxbury Ward 1 are assigned the polling place at Town Hall, as are voters in Ward 3 Districts 1 and 6.
All other voters are assigned to the Senior Center polling site, according to the county. The two sites will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day for ballot drop-off. NJ families can get money to help with child care during remote learning. Here's how to apply
New Jersey families struggling to afford child care during remote learning can now apply for state grants under a new $150 million state program. The Department of Human Services said Monday that it had begun taking applications for its COVID-19 child care tuition assistance program. Families with incomes up to $75,000 that need either full or part-time child care due to their child's remote learning schedule are eligible to apply.
Tuition assistance will be available through Dec. 30 for eligible residents with children 5 to 13 years old. Applicants must show proof of income and a notice or announcement from their child's school of a remote learning schedule. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov. Click here to read more about this from the Daily Record. Information regarding this program can also be found in our Virtual Backpack flyer section.

Annual Roxbury 'Halloween House' Display Axed for 2020
Add the Halloween House in Succasunna to the long list of traditionally annual events in Roxbury canceled this year due to COVID-19. For the first time in more than three decades, Craig and Madeline Heard are not welcoming the public to their property at 2 Alcott Way for an over-the-top Halloween celebration that takes almost two months to build and features thousands of creepy and funny items. "To our Halloween House followers and Halloween guests and families: After 33+ years of The Halloween House display, it is with regret that this year we must postpone our display until next year," said the Heards in a statement.
The decision likely came as no surprise to those in the Heards' neighborhood who surely noticed that the family had yet to move to its front yard the huge "pirate ship" that serves as the centerpiece of the annual exhibit. The free display, which spills into several rooms of the Heard home, takes about seven weeks to build and typically includes new features every year. Click here to read more about this from TAPinto Roxbury.

Roxbury Cancels Holiday Street Fair, Re-installs Some B-ball Hoops
There will be no Home for the Holidays street fair in Roxbury this year, thanks to COVID-19, but some of the township's basketball hoops - taken down this spring as the pandemic struck - will be re-installed, said Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo on Tuesday.
The continued presence of the coronavirus prompted township officials to pull the plug on the annual Home for the Holidays, an event that had been scheduled to take place on Main Street in Succasunna on Dec. 5. This year's event would have been the sixth.
However, basketball players won't have to wait until then to return to some outdoor public courts. The mayor said the township Department of Public Works (DPW) will be re-installing basketball hoops at the Mooney Mountain, Lower Berkshire Valley, Port Morris and Dell Avenue courts. The hoops were removed in mid-March in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. DeFillippo said the basketball hoops at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna will remain uninstalled for the time being. He said their re-installation depends on the behavior of people at the courts where the hoops are being reinstalled. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

$250K Fix-Up in Store for Morris Canal in Roxbury
An important piece of the former Morris Canal, situated in Ledgewood and choked with weeds, will soon receive major restoration. Known as Morris Canal Incline Plane 2 East, the 19th Century structure in Roxbury’s Morris Canal Park will see restoration of its stone-lined raceway, mule/towpath, foundations and support structures. The work will be funded by $250,200 worth of state and county historic preservation grants distributed by the township under an ordinance adopted this week by the Roxbury Mayor and Council. Considered engineering marvels at the time, the 23 inclined planes on the 107-mile-long Morris Canal used massive, water-powered turbines deep in the ground to pull canal boats up and over hills. Plane 2 East allowed the canal boats, loaded with 70 tons of coal, to traverse 80 feet of elevation in their voyage between the Delaware and Hudson rivers.
