Touching Base on Base Course

Written by Mike Dahler,

East Sioux Quarry Plant Manager

One of the highest-demand products at East Sioux Quarry is SD DOT specification quartzite base course. This material is used in many major road construction projects throughout the Sioux Falls area, as well as in commercial and residential developments. Quartzite is preferred over natural base course for these projects due to its consistency and durability.

Producing quality base course requires consistently meeting strict specifications. Maintaining those standards ensures a reliable product that performs as intended and keeps customers returning for future projects.

At East Sioux Quarry, we produce our base course using specific bins in order to meet gradation requests

that a screen change alone can’t deliver. We maintain several blend recipes that allow us to meet required gradation specifications. Over the years, these blends have been refined to balance inventory management while maintaining the high quality our customers expect.

Due to the highly abrasive nature of quartzite, the bins required a complete rebuild last winter. This project was completed by our Akron shop. At the beginning of the seasaon, the existing bins were removed and replaced with newly fabricated units.

The upgraded bins have improved reliability and efficiency, helping us maximize uptime and production while continuing to deliver a high-quality base course product to our customers. Special thanks to the Akron shop and the ESQ maintenance team for their hard work on this, as well as the operators that keep the bins running and the trucks moving.

Open Enrollment Reminder

Now is a good time to start thinking about any changes you may want to make to your benefits for the upcoming year. Keep an eye out for additional information from HR regarding open enrollment dates, benefit updates, and instructions for making your selections. Email HR@lgeverist.com with any questions.

Jeff Darner has retired from his position as Quality Control Manager. After 31 years with L. G. Everist, we hope Jeff enjoys retirement!

Dell Rapids East recently had an appreciation luncheon for 2 consecutive zero-citation MSHA inspections! The teams have been doing great work - the plants, shop, and the D & I Railroad mechanical department. All 3 of these areas are led by different managers who have one common goal - to keep our team members safe. Way to go DREQ!

Ace Ready Mix and Myrl & Roy's Paving recently volunteered time and equipment for the Sioux Falls Touch-a-Truck event for local children to check out the interesting vehicles. Even though it was a night of rain, families came out enjoyed their time in the equipment.
