LGE's Unsung Hero

By: Kathy Bowes

Carrie Garry

circa November 1998

In the ever-changing landscape of our company, there is one constant that we are all thankful for, that is Carrie Garry.  She has been a valuable and dedicated team member for over 30 years to LGE.  Once upon a time, in the 1990s all scale tickets were sent to the office and manually entered. Carrie was hired to review those entries for errors.  That process was an 8-hour day with two employees devoting their entire shift.  Today we process over 3,200 tickets a day. She remembers the segregated coffee breaks taken during the work day, women first shift, men took the second. Carrie doesn’t miss the strict no food, drink, or radios at your desk rule or the 40 pounds of incoming daily mail.  If she could revive an older tradition it would be the small group out-of-the-office lunch outings. While we are most grateful to her for ensuring we receive our pay 26 times a year, her contributions day after day are so much more than that. Carrie is the friendly voice on the phone and the first person to greet you when entering the office. Other tasks she assists with are our vehicle licensing, maintaining the certificate of insurance database, accounts payable, haul reports, ordering office supplies, and most importantly figuring out how to operate our new tech-savvy copier/scanner machine. All of these responsibilities and Carrie’s willingness to assist in other areas helps keep our department and company on track.  Characteristics that describe her are organized, dependable, knowledgeable, helpful, holiday cake baker, and local supplier of cream cheese mints.

Her involvement within the community she has resided in her entire life includes being a Harrisburg Tiger super fan. She has served as a Junior Olympic Volleyball officer and volunteer coach.

She is truly someone that is an “unsung” hero.

Hot Mix Asphalt is a very complex material which sometimes has conflicting performance demands. It must resist deformation and cracking. It must be durable over time, resist water damage, and provide a tractive surface. In order to meet these demands quality control is a necessity. The following tests are just a few that Myrl & Roy’s QC technicians use to assure quality standards.

Gyratory compactor test produces an asphalt sample which simulates actual field compaction. This is also referred to as the bulk specific gravity.

The Rice Test is used to measure the theoretical maximum specific gravity. Air voids are calculated by the difference between the bulk specific and maximum specific gravity. High air voids can cause moisture susceptibility and low air voids can cause premature deterioration.

The ignition test method is used to determine the asphalt content of a mixture. The technician burns off the asphalt binder until only the aggregate remains. Binder content is then calculated by subtracting the weight of the remaining aggregate from the original weight. A gradation can be performed on the aggregate remains of this test.

Open Enrollment FAQs

  • I am over 65 years of age, what coverage does long-term disability insurance provide me if I become disabled? The LTD Benefit will pay the normal disability rate until social security age which is 67 for those born after 1960.
  • I am currently on the company health plan but over 65, when should I enroll in Medicare? Everyone’s situation is different. You will need to research what is best for you and your situation. Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older. You are first eligible to sign up for Medicare 3 months before you turn 65.
  • Can I make a change to my Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution in the middle of the year? No, you can only make changes during open enrollment or have a lifetime event. Lifetime event is marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, or job loss.
  • Can I enroll my parents in the health plan? No. Our plan allows for dependents under the age of 26.
  • How do I find a VSP eye doctor or place to buy glasses? Search the VSP Website https://www.vsp.com/eye-doctor
  • Is the High Deductible Health Plan just for young people? The HDHP is a great option for all ages if you are healthy and rarely seek medical care for illness or injury regardless of age. For folks who do not anticipate many medical expenses for the upcoming year, it makes sense to minimize your premiums and choose an HDHP.
  • Is the company going to help fund the Health Savings Account every year? We anticipate contributing to your HSA again next year but at a lower matching rate.
  • If I leave LG Everist, can I take the voluntary Life Insurance with me? Voluntary life is a portable plan that allows you to take it with you if you leave.
  • Can I have a Health Savings Account without the High Deductible Health Plan? You may contribute to an HSA only if you have a High Deductible Health Plan.
  • I don’t want any changes to my current plans. Do I need to fill out the open enrollment paperwork? Yes. There are now 3 options for the health insurance plans and we cannot enroll you in dental or vision coverage unless you sign-up for them. Everyone needs to fill out the Health/Dental/Vision Enrollment Form. We are switching insurance companies, so everyone needs to fill out a Guardian Form. It is important for you to elect your beneficiaries for the company-paid $25,000 life insurance policy.
