Dear Roy Cloud Families,
We are coming to the close of this calendar year. What a journey we have shared with one another! I am grateful for your patience, understanding, participation and perseverance. As we prepare to close out the year, how will the memory of it stay with you? I’d like to share an activity presented this month to our students in grades 3-5, prepared by our SEL Coordinator, Todd Armstrong, and based on our work with Character Strong.
In this activity, students reach up high to the sky and imagine the sky holds something they want but have been afraid to request. As they stretch, they breathe in confidence and let go of doubt! Next, students close their eyes, take a few deep breaths and think of a positive memory for which they are grateful. As they picture the memory, they recall it through each of the five senses:
- What did you see around you in the memory?
- What sounds did you hear?
- What smells were around you?
- What did you feel around you?
- What tastes were associated with this memory?
As they recall through their senses, they practice applying these steps to that thing in the sky they have wanted. They imagine this new thing by associating it with positive sensations, therefore making it more pleasant to receive. Longer term, they are learning how to gather more and more information about what is happening around them, an essential part of self-awareness.
What positive memories of 2020 might we recall through our senses as we reach to the sky for greater things in the year to come? Are you willing to experience this activity with your children at home? I wonder what could be created…
In partnership,
Diane

SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT WORK
4th Graders Study California Native Americans
|
|
After reading about and discussing several California Native American tribes, Mrs. Kraus's fourth graders were tasked with selecting one tribe and creating an artifact from that native group. This artifact was to be made with items found in their homes. Trips to the craft store were not allowed. Each student then created a presentation that included information about the artifact and interesting facts about the tribe.

4th graders recorded their presentations on Flipgrid!
