We are so excited to have students back on campus! On January 19th, we welcomed two AM/PM kindergarten classes. (We still have room in PM kinder if you want to join in on the fun!) We also welcomed a group of sixth graders, receiving in-class instruction from Mrs. Huelman, while she continues to teach online in her classroom. Ms. Pappalardo, our Resource Specialist, continues with her pilot program for middle school. And on January 28th, we welcomed our learning hubs. These small groups of up to eight students in grades 1-5 are guided through their online instruction by learning coaches. We are rejuvenated by the presence of our students!

To help explain where we are in our efforts to bring back all students and staff into a safe learning environment, please see Dr. Baker’s full communication, Reopening My School, which was sent to all families on Friday, January 29th.

Finally, I want to thank all of the parents, teachers, and students who participated in our first book club meetup on January 21st. We are reading Deep Kindness by Houston Kraft and we welcome anyone who would still like to join the discussion on February 25th, March 18th, April 22nd, and May 20th. Spoiler Alert: Houston Kraft is scheduled to join us on March 18th! If you can join us for only one meetup, March 18th is the one to attend. Working with student leadership classes, we have set a goal for 250 participants. Mark your calendars now!
With kindness,
Diane

SEL CURRICULUM UPDATE
Parent Ed Night: Practicing Empathy, Gratitude & Kindness
Zoom in the winter is a daily grind, isolating, and sometimes defeating. We are all in need of a gathering in person, full of smiles and affection in a café, ballpark, or classroom. This month’s Parent Ed night is about overcoming “Zoom Gloom” through the practice of empathy, gratitude and above all, kindness. These are not simply “nice things to do” but are proven by science and research to offer profound coping capability and health benefits. Join us, participate in the activities, and take away simple skills for daily practice arriving with a sense of hope and possibility for the remainder of the school year. Bring markers and a sketch pad so you're ready to participate!

STEAM Update: Keeping our Friends Warm

Students practiced empathy as they designed ways to keep their stuffed animal friends warm in the winter. In interviewing their animals about the ways they may be cold, they came up with solutions that fit their friends' proportions and shapes, like the example below. We have some fashionistas here!
