welcomeDear Gunners (Readers) -

WELCOME TO AIRBURST
NO 30 - 2018

The end  of 2018 bears down upon us and with its demise we have seen the last of the Firepower Seminars that formed part of the RAAHC's efforts to mark the ANZAC  Centenary.  Since 2015, the RAAHC has delivered the Firepower Seminar Series on behalf of the RAA as its
official contribution to the Centenary of Anzac. Over four years, eleven seminars and 44 lectures,
Firepower has brought to life the immense challenges confronting the predecessors of today's RAA and their compatriots, one hundred years ago. This analysis of the mastery of artillery and prosecution of
firepower has revealed many pertinent lessons
 for today's Army

The last seminar was held at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) on 8 November 2018. At its conclusion the Head of Regiment presented the RAAHC's seminar manager, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Floyd, with XXXXXX. The photo below shows the presentation.

The ANZAC Centennial Gun is also winding down although it was a memorable day at the Liverpool Remembrance Day 2018 Ceremony.

It was a great sight as the Team rumbled along Liverpool streets

Then into Bigge Park the scene of the ceremony.
Horses and Detachment had to stand in place for over an hour. Both did extremely well.

After the ceremony a static display was set until 3 pm

The next outing for the A NZAC Centennial Gun Team will be ANZAC Day 2019. Discussions are underway with a number of venues  so watch the newsletter.

The time will come when the Board will decide what the final fate of the ANZAC Centennial Gun will be. It is planned to have a final decision by June 2019

Ubique,
Ian Ahearn
Deputy Chair

Brigadier Craig Furini will be relinquishing his role as Head of Regiment (HOR) of the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (RRAA) on 4th December 2018. Craig has committed himself wholeheartedly to the Regiment and has left large shoes to fill. We wish Craig all the best in his future career and await the appointment of his successor as HOR.

Regimental Committee has been busy considering a range of issues including:

  • 1st of August 2021 will mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of a permanent Australian artillery capability that has evolved into and continues today as the RAA. It is propose that the anniversary will be marked by a series of events yet to be determined.

The Ruthless Independent Check - Did You Know?

Accuracy is a hallmark of gunners.

Airburst 27 is inaccurate where it states "King George VI granted the Royal Australian Artillery UBIQUE as a Battle Honour in 1950 and this is clearly laid down in Australian Army Order AA06 (36/1/539), dated 1950." It was authorised 20 years earlier!

"UBIQUE" was adopted by Australian gunners on their new Regimental badge in 1930. The original documents reveal:
  • Military Board Circular Memorandum No 337 dated 19 June 1930 authorised the adoption by all the permanent and part-time elements of the Australian Artillery of the Royal Artillery hat badge of a field gun with a scroll bearing the battle honour UBIQUE (Everywhere) and a crown above, however the scrolls below were modified to bear the motto CONSENSU STABILES (Strong in Agreement) and the word AUSTRALIA.
  • A letter from the Minister of the Army to the Prime Minister dated 26 October 1949 includes "The badge of the Royal Australian Artillery already includes one motto of the Royal Artillery in its design, namely "UBIQUE". In these circumstances it would be appropriate if the Royal Australian Artillery were permitted to adopt the second motto also." The second motto being 'QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT'.
  • On 28 November 1949 His Majesty King George VI granted the Royal Australian Artillery approval to adopt the motto of the Royal Australian Artillery 'QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT'. The use of the motto CONSENSU STABILES was discontinued. Implementation of the change was promulgated in Australian Army Order No 6 of 1950. It does not mention UBIQUE.

The error unfortunately has been perpetuated widely in publications and on websites. RAA Standing Orders were corrected in 2014.

ROYAL GUN SALUTE
The number of rounds fired in a Royal Gun Salute depends on the place and occasion. The basic salute is 21 rounds; however, in London's Hyde Park and Green Park an extra 20 rounds are added (ie. a 41 Royal Gun Salute) because they are Royal Parks.
