Royal Mail Potential Strike During Christmas Season
On October 15, 2019, Royal Mail workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of striking
with a turnout of nearly 76% of Communication Workers Union (CWU) members who backed the action by 97%. The dispute, which is over job security and employment terms and conditions, increases the threat of industrial action leading up to Christmas, and potentially the first national postal strike in a decade. Strike action is threatened for unspecified dates across the Christmas period, with concerns of a strike during Black Friday which would cause millions of packages to be undelivered.
In an effort to avoid nationwide strikes over the peak holiday season, Royal Mail made a plea to CWU bosses to restart talks. Royal Mail offered to enter into discussions “without preconditions”, if the CWU provided a “binding commitment” to remove the threat of walkouts over the holidays.
Yesterday, Royal Mail announced that the CWU had rejected its offer aimed at avoiding strike action for the rest of the year. The CWU has not yet set a date for any strike.
