  • 4th graders explored the Minnesota History Center and enjoyed a presentation about fur trading.
  • 5th grade students learned about erosion and renewable energy at the Carver County Historical Society.
Senator Visits WMHS
State Senator Greg Clausen recently visited WMHS to learn about our successful College in the Schools (CIS) program. Senator Clausen, a member of the State Senate Education committee, will work on CIS legislation in the upcoming session with goals to have CIS funding become more prevalent and consistent in schools. Watertown-Mayer offers more than 60 CIS credits and is one of the top ten CIS programs in Minnesota.

Beyond The Textbook

Creativity. Innovation. Collaboration. Fifth grade students practiced these important skills during a recent wind turbine project. They formed "companies" and competed to see who could design the fastest spinning wind turbine. Students designed, built and tested their wind turbines while learning about physics, engineering and team dynamics. WMMS Clubs Build Community
Middle school students meet with their "Club" every other Wednesday morning during Prime Time. The clubs allow students to explore current interests or discover new hobbies. Students connect and build relationships based on shared personal interests, which strengthens the WMMS community.

Clubs include: reading, student council, yearbook, pinterest, drawing, movies, sports and such, football pick 'ems, peer advocates, hunting, card club, and golf.

ECFE Celebrates 40 Years

"Come for your children, stay for yourself" is the mantra for Watertown-Mayer's Early Childhood Family Education programs. Unique to Minnesota, the ECFE program is celebrating 40 years of educating families. Serving children from birth to age five, ECFE offers weekly classes, one-time specials, drop-by playtimes, parenting speakers and program field trips. Winter ECFE classes will begin the week of January 12, 2015.
Making A Difference
The WM 7-12 grade wrestling team and managers recently volunteered at Feed My Starving Children. The community service and team building activity provided 19,656 meals to children in Haiti - enough to feed 54 children for a year! The WM Wrestling Club contributed funds to pay for the meals, with the money coming from the team's softener salt fundraiser.

Several community members, including WM employees and FFA students, served dinner to senior citizens at the Watertown Community Center this week. WM band and choir students also provided musical entertainment. The annual holiday dinner is sponsored by the Watertown Commission on Aging. Photos provided by Michael Burns.
Deck The Halls

Need a bit of holiday cheer? Take a walk down the Kindergarten hallway at WMPS. The Kindergarteners, with the help of their teachers and many volunteers, spent a day rotating through each classroom to create more than 700 festive, hand-made decorations.

WMHS Band Concert Highlights
The recent WMHS Band Concert included soft solos, winter favorites and lots of unique percussion instruments. At the end of the highlight reel below, you will see Senior Dustin Koehnen performing his arrangement of Silent Night when the PAC goes dark. After the clip ends, hundreds of twinkling stars were projected throughout the PAC. In darkness, the entire band surrounded the audience and joined Dustin to conclude the song. It was a beautiful moment!
