Royal Dancing and Bowling
Our ROYAL unified team raised more than $1000 by participating in the Unified Dance Marathon, which is an inclusive dance party to support Special Olympics Minnesota.

The team also enjoyed lots of fun and success at the unified bowling tournament on Nov 30.

Our 10 unified doubles teams came home with six gold medals, two silver medals, one bronze medal and one 4th place ribbon! Most importantly everyone had a great time and created memories to last a lifetime!
What's Happening at WMES?

Lego League Competition
Our WMMS Lego League team has been working hard for several weeks to build and program their Lego Mindstorm robots. They showed off their new skills and knowledge during a regional competition on Dec 1.

During the competition, our students demonstrated their robots for the judges, performed a skit explaining how to protect astronauts from radiation and presented their core values.

The judging criteria for the competition includes ratings for teamwork, professionalism, mechanical design, programming, strategy and innovation.

It was a great learning experience for our students! #RoyalRobotics
Patriot's Pen
Congratulations to our 2018 VFW Patriot's Pen essay award finalists! Kira Frisbee won the first place award for her essay about this year's theme "Why I Honor the Flag." Congrats also to Isabella Hilgers and Kennedy Motende who won the second and third place awards. Thanks to Alan Krueger and the Norwood-Young America VFW for recognizing our students.

The Patriot's Pen is an annual essay contest that encourages young minds to examine America's history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.
Thanks and Giving

Shark Tank
Shark Tank is one of the new exploratory courses at Watertown-Mayer Middle School this year. In this class, 8th grade students learn about entrepreneurship and what it takes to start a business while creating their own inventions and developing their own business ideas. At the end of the quarter, students pitch their business idea to community business leaders similar to the TV show Shark Tank.

Our first quarter students had excellent business ideas including a sled with a built-in blanket, heated dog vests, an odor-eliminating spray for sports equipment, a dog-friendly bakery, bath bombs for kids, locker organizing shelves, a dog treat dispenser, skincare products, and so much more. Thank you to the "sharks" who volunteered to watch the students' presentations: Dave Kind, Melanie Winters, Ryan Muonio, Shelby Dressel, and Jennifer Janikula. This experience just wouldn't be the same without the help of our Sharks!

Annual Financial Report
The WM School Board reviewed the annual school district audit during its November meeting. One key indicator of school district financial health is measured by financial reserves as a percentage of expenditures on programs supporting students and school district operations. The current state of the district in this regard is presented in the following chart, which shows a trend toward increasing our reserves.

District staff members continue to work as efficiently as possible to deliver on their mission in support of students, aligned with  strategic directions that include long-term fiscal sustainability.

However, a recent Schools for Equity in Education report and the audit charts below show the district continues to operate with less revenue than like-size districts.
As the administration and school board plan for the future, careful consideration will be given to all options to continue to make wise use of taxpayer dollars in support of our students.

We are committed to provide a wide variety of learning experiences that appeal to students' interests and passions, and prepare them for life beyond our schools.

Want to know more?  Watch the November school board meeting , review the audit presentation or contact Superintendent Wilke at 952-955-0480.
